Magic money, Longmuir, Ahmad

BDO’s survey of British football clubs suggests control, if not complete sanity, has descended on Scottish football.  Most Premiership clubs surveyed predicted they would return to profitability over the next year.

On the back of Phil Mac Giolla Bhain’s article on former Scottish Football League chief exec David Longmuir’s bonuses, which are no longer payable, these are heady days for some clubs who have lived hand-to-mouth stuffing pork into Longmuir’s trough.  You better believe it’s financial Armageddon, for the former SFL man. The SFA will surely insist on inappropriate financial stain is left on our game.

Anyway………. It seems if I explain the structural gap between Rangers International’s earnings through season ticket sales and the costs of operating a football club which can facilitate circa 40,000 spectators on a regular basis, we can all figure why the gap cannot be bridged.  We are different because despite having enormously higher football costs, we can access enormously higher revenue streams.

On the other hand, explaining that Celtic’s operational costs need to be augmented by player sales and/or Champions League income, just to break even, and that player sales and/or Champions League income cannot exclusively be used for player purchases, amounts to a heresy against deeply held orthodox views.

Add in a reminder about the strategy which has made all the difference to Celtic – buying wisely, selling wisely, and sit back to watch a secular belief structure ignore the ‘every penny to be spent’ prediction and vent as though their deity has just been denied.

This stuff’s complicated, apparently, but paying attention to financial detail is not a required Obligation to support Celtic, so if it doesn’t float your boat, I’d start by demanding to know where all the Seville money went to….

I hear the Daily Record accompanied their – Imran Ahmad to sue Rangers International for £3.4m – story with a completely baseless story about Celtic losing out on the only transfer target they know about.  They were wrong on some of the Ahmad story (Charles Green may have produced the documents Ahmad would rely on in court, but suggestions they are in concert on this claim are wildly inappropriate).  Still, it plays into current orthodoxy on Charles Green.

Going on what they’ve written, they know nothing about Celtic’s transfer negotiations either.  Absolutely squat.  Percentage of Celtic fans who know the media’s game: 100%.  Percentage of Celtic fans who allow themselves to be influenced despite knowing the above……?

If these people have you panicking, look elsewhere for sympathy.  We have a team building strategy, it has delivered well thus far and it will continue to do so.  Buy wisely, sell wisely, spend every penny over a given business cycle.  Pretty straightforward, really.

  4. The latest revelations regarding Longmuir & Ballantyne have shown how cronyism ,greed and self interest by the so called custodians of our game have are actually the cause of its downfall, there secret meetings ,agreements behind closed doors, trying to save a deadclub to the detriment of all other considerations are testimony that Scottish football has been corrupted and needs a root & branch reform immediately and a complete open, transparent enquiry into why cheats liars & crooks took over our national game

  7. If there is an investigation into financial irregarities of the 2 individuals the governing body and the red tops may attempt to once again retrieve the air brush from the cupboard, I’m not convinced they will be successful in this one, they will take on turnbull Hutton at their peril, he has no need for Spivco commercial deals, he has no historical loyalty to either individual, mr huttons integrity and honesty will shine through, to an extent which will shame other more high profile chairmen, if he has to he will be a lone voice, that in itself is a sad indictment of the position Scottish football finds itself.

  14. @ EKBhoy

I do not see the issue with complaining about the current situation. We have sold the spine of our team and have not acquired adequate replacements (excluding defence). We have left CL qualification in the balance and in case anyone doesn’t realise, CL is EVERYTHING to this club. The ‘very successful business model’ we have is based purely on one good season of European football. If we do not obtain CL this year, the model will not look so strong.

Given that we have next to no debt, are guaranteed winning the SPL for the foreseeable future and will be a seeded team for every qualifier we play, one would think we should ensure we have a sufficiently good team on the park to make the CL; in this regard, we have thus far failed.

People do not seem to realise that we are at a crossroads of monumental importance: make the CL and we are in an incredibly good financial position, like never before; fail to do so and the consequences are severe.

  15. STAY FOCUSED V THE CHEATS.

Once there was a poor famer who was deeply in dept to a tyrannical warlord. The warlord came to the farmer and demanded payment, which he knew the farmer could not pay. The warlord had an alterative motive for calling in the famer’s debt at a time he knew the farmer could not pay. The farmer had a beautiful daughter that the warlord wanted for a bride. The warlord offer the option of canceling the debt in exchange for the daughter, or the warlord would take the farm. The farmer did not want to lose his farm, and he consulted with the daughter who did not want to marry the warlord. Now there is a dilemma for all involved. The daughter does not want to see her father lose the farm, but does not want to marry the warlord. The farmer is faced with losing either his daughter or his farm; and the warlord who would have to except the money or the farm in payment of the debt, really wants the daughter and is only using the debt as ploy. It does seem that the warlord has the most power, but may come away without what he wants most, the daughter, but will not lose no matter which decision the farmer makes. The farmer seems to have the power of choosing between his daughter and his farm, but will lose no matter which choice he makes. The daughter is a pawn and a prize, and seems to have no power what so ever.

The farmer told the warlord, “I know I owe you money and you have the right to demand payment, but it is impossible for me to choose.” The warlord who was more experienced in these matters proposed a solution. I will place a black stone and a white stone in an empty moneybag. Your daughter can reach into the bag and pick a stone. If she pulls the white stone, you can keep both your daughter and I will cancel the debt you owe me. If she pulls the black stone I get your daughter. The farmer thought he had no other options and agreed. The warlord try to divert the attention of the farmer and the daughter as he bent to pick up the two stones to place in the bag by asking the farmer a question about a building on the farm. The farmer turned to look at the building, but the daughter stayed focused on the warlord and the stones hoping to detect a difference in size or shape that would enable her to pick the white stone without looking. Instead she saw the warlord pick up two black stones and place them in the bag. No matter which stone she picked she would have to go with the warlord. Now the daughter appears to have some powerful knowledge that the warlord is cheating, but she knows it would be death for and perhaps her father if she confronted the warlord. Her fate seemed sealed. She had but a single option, to pull a stone from the bag, and her fate would be determined for the rest of her life, the farmer would stand-by helplessly and watch as he lost his daughter.

The daughter closed her eyes and reached into the bag. She felt each stone as if trying to select the one that would win her freedom. Finally she selected a stone, but as she pulled it from the bag she dropped it before anyone could see the color. Once the stone was on the ground there was no way to tell which stone was pulled white or black. Now there was a decided power shift. The daughter apologised for her clumsiness, and said there was really no harm done. They could just look at the remaining stone in the bag to determine the colour she had drawn. The warlord could not argue with the logic, and had to agree lest he be caught in his scheme to cheat the farmer. So even though he was unscrupulous he could be publicly found to be a cheat. So by thinking beyond the apparent options the farmer’s daughter, who had no real say in the matter, decided her own favourable outcome.

There are many lessons to be learned from this story. The first and foremost is that when faced with a seemly impossible problem there are always favourable solutions. Another is not to let your opponent set the options or parameters, or if he does, think beyond them. A third and important lesson is that even though the daughter knew the warlord was cheating she could not directly use that information to confront him, but employed it subtly against him. Often employees feel because their boss has stepped out of bounds that they can prevail by confronting him. Not always the case. Had the daughter accused the warlord of cheating he would have killed or imprisoned both the farmer and the daughter. Be skillful on how you use special or secret knowledge. Going public is not the panacea against management it seems to be. They still hold a lot of the power. One of the most important and often missed lessons was the daughter’s ability to stay focused under duress. Often when faced with an impossible situation we lose our focus.

  16. Twist n turns…..

Love the story and would love to think we (Celtic) have the dirt on thems ( Huns) and are using it wisely, like the farmer’s daughter.

  18. If the current squad require Hooper and Wanyama to get past a team who earn a fraction of their wages then they have no business being at Celtic. Also remember the big advantage we have in that their home game is 200km away from their actual stadium.

Even if we sold Forster tomorrow, it would be an absolute disgrace if the rest of the squad didn’t do the job.

I agree the squad isn’t ready for the group stage but this isn’t a champions league team.

One thing that the happy clappers and the mine shafter both seem to agree on is that the folks who run the game in scotland appear to be acting corruptly

There doesnt seem to be any dissent at all from that view.

Now the club themselves might know somethings that we dont know

but it just doesnt seem to make any sense for our club to remain as silent as the oft criticised MSM

I can kind of understand why the MSM are silent, perhaps they think they are protecting their own, or perhaps they think the subject is a legal taboo, or perhaps they felt intimidated by media house.

Can someone, happy clapper or mine shafter, exlain to me why our club and indeed all the other clubs in the league are keeping silent?

    must be juicy stuff ;-)

  21. @I’m Neil Lennon (tamrabam)

If the club has proof of corruption then it would no doubt say something

Even then the investigation process is murky. Just look at Lord Nimmo Smith’s complimentary seat in hospitality along with Mr Hugh Dallas.

  22. On the list of ‘deals’ Ahmad says he has secured for Sevco:

“By buying Albion Car park I saved the club £3.5m over 10 years as lease was an astronomical 350k per year.”

Didn’t think you could steal heritable property. Learn something every day.

  23. tamrabam,

IMO the only possible justification would be getting banned from European and international football, it is an issue I gave a lot of thought to while considering the resolution, I finally decided the only way forward was accept the risk and go for the clear out and restructuring of the sfa.

  24. So if Ahmed saved Rangers M£3.5 over 10 years when they were paying K£350 per year for the car park, he is claiming to have bought it for nothing.

So maybe he is worth 5%.

  26. According to FF, the knives are out for Jim Ballantyne:

“He’s a bear, they are basically ethnic cleansing Scottish football.”

    ——

“And why not? they have just about ethnic cleansed the labour party, the police force, Glasgow City Council and the rest without a peep from anyone”

    ——

“never knew he was a bear.

but a perfect example of this country now. a good proddie doesnt do the right thing for whatever stupid reason and the fenian hordes kick his bloody carcase around for fun.”

    ——

“The point is, if it was Doncaster or Rhegan would there be an investigation?

If the payments we’re to one of Liewell’s lackies would they have had a second look?

It does seem like people with any links to Rangers have and will be hounded out.”

    ——

“The [Tims] are a lynch mob. Their delusional, sectarian senses associate someone with Rangers in any way shape or form and they are after him.

Back in the 15th century, those religious nutters who went round accusing people of witch craft then burning them at the stake, had the same mentality the [Tims] do today.”

  27. just a thought regards the lack of striker so far this transfer window, a lot of people claiming that the longer we leave it the more a players price increases and it puts the selling club at an advantage, maybe, maybe not.

so far this season celtic in competitive games have won 4 and drawn 1, 80% win ration, thats pretty good by any clubs standards.

therefore i am more than confident we will progress into the group stages via this play-off.

once we have progressed into the group stages that puts us in the driving seat, i.e. any player which we have been chasing, for e.g. finnbossan, if he really wants to join us will put pressure on his club to let him go. 2nd leg is 28th august i think, that leaves 5 days of window left. do the selling club continue to hold out on the risk that said player might not have as an amazing season as before and price reduces and that same player would also be a further year of contact run down.

i think the club are playing this one perfectly in terms of risk management and only paying a players true worth.
