Magic money, Longmuir, Ahmad

BDO’s survey of British football clubs suggests control, if not complete sanity, has descended on Scottish football.  Most Premiership clubs surveyed predicted they would return to profitability over the next year.

On the back of Phil Mac Giolla Bhain’s article on former Scottish Football League chief exec David Longmuir’s bonuses, which are no longer payable, these are heady days for some clubs who have lived hand-to-mouth stuffing pork into Longmuir’s trough.  You better believe it’s financial Armageddon, for the former SFL man. The SFA will surely insist on inappropriate financial stain is left on our game.

Anyway………. It seems if I explain the structural gap between Rangers International’s earnings through season ticket sales and the costs of operating a football club which can facilitate circa 40,000 spectators on a regular basis, we can all figure why the gap cannot be bridged.  We are different because despite having enormously higher football costs, we can access enormously higher revenue streams.

On the other hand, explaining that Celtic’s operational costs need to be augmented by player sales and/or Champions League income, just to break even, and that player sales and/or Champions League income cannot exclusively be used for player purchases, amounts to a heresy against deeply held orthodox views.

Add in a reminder about the strategy which has made all the difference to Celtic – buying wisely, selling wisely, and sit back to watch a secular belief structure ignore the ‘every penny to be spent’ prediction and vent as though their deity has just been denied.

This stuff’s complicated, apparently, but paying attention to financial detail is not a required Obligation to support Celtic, so if it doesn’t float your boat, I’d start by demanding to know where all the Seville money went to….

I hear the Daily Record accompanied their – Imran Ahmad to sue Rangers International for £3.4m – story with a completely baseless story about Celtic losing out on the only transfer target they know about.  They were wrong on some of the Ahmad story (Charles Green may have produced the documents Ahmad would rely on in court, but suggestions they are in concert on this claim are wildly inappropriate).  Still, it plays into current orthodoxy on Charles Green.

Going on what they’ve written, they know nothing about Celtic’s transfer negotiations either.  Absolutely squat.  Percentage of Celtic fans who know the media’s game: 100%.  Percentage of Celtic fans who allow themselves to be influenced despite knowing the above……?

If these people have you panicking, look elsewhere for sympathy.  We have a team building strategy, it has delivered well thus far and it will continue to do so.  Buy wisely, sell wisely, spend every penny over a given business cycle.  Pretty straightforward, really.

Today is the feast of St Maximilian Kolbe, a Polish Franciscan who volunteered to take the place of a stranger and died at Auschwitz.

    – in his earlier life:

Kolbe was sent to Kraków in 1912, and later that same year to the house of studies of the Order in Rome, where he studied philosophy, theology, mathematics and physics. He earned a doctorate in philosophy in 1915 at the Pontifical Gregorian University, and a doctorate in theology in 1919 at the Pontifical University of St. Bonaventure.

During his time as a student, he witnessed vehement demonstrations against Popes St. Pius X and Benedict XV in Rome during an anniversary celebration by the Freemasons. According to Kolbe,

They placed the black standard of the “Giordano Brunisti” under the windows of the Vatican. On this standard the archangel, St. Michael, was depicted lying under the feet of the triumphant Lucifer. At the same time, countless pamphlets were distributed to the people in which the Holy Father (i.e., the Pope) was attacked shamefully

‘Kolbe was inspired to organize the Militia Immaculata, or Army of Mary, to work for conversion of sinners and enemies of the Catholic Church, specifically the Freemasons, through the intercession of the Virgin Mary. So serious was Kolbe about this goal that he added to the Miraculous Medal prayer:

‘Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. And for all those who do not have recourse to thee; especially the Masons and all those recommended to thee’

would you commend the MSM for having the same good grace to keep their silence too

IMO it smacks of hypocisy for us to slag off the MSM for ignoring the revelations from Charlotte and phil and co, when our club (apparently) holds the same silence

It has been said that those who ignore the shennaigans are in effect condoning them

I agree that is the case with the MSM

I just struggle to undertsand why our club are silent on all of this

It looks like the gist of your case is that, if Celtic say something about it the sevconians will be angry, well i think they will be angry and will probably use their hatred of all things celtic to unite them.

It has often looked as though it is just a matter of time before the sevconians are in the SPL and challenging for CL money. You might argue that when they get there, their cheating may be even more brazen than the huns ever were and will be aided and abetted by a fitba authorities who have been outed but have rode the storm out and are now free to act as they please, because other parties are afraid

Actually having given it a wee bit of thought maybe Celtic are being silent because the last time they threatened to take legal advice Jabba wiped the floor with them.

From a Celtic perspective I was sorry to see Billy Stark mimic Neil Lennon’s use of Tony Watt on the left wing. I can’t for the life of me see what he’s learning by being played there. Any coaches enlighten me?

Possibly, they would need to consult with Rangers, how to prepare efficient appeal.

  15. I am looking forward to the last few days of the transfer window – especially if we get back into the CL group stage we are likely to see some decent additions.

We are in a re-building phase. The core of the team assembled from 2010-11 have moved on, with some of the pieces still in situ who we need to keep (e.g. Forster, Mulgrew, Brown, Izzy, Ledley, Kayal, Sameras).

However – that team started to be built on SPL football and eventually “graduated” to the Europa League and then the Champions League. The team that is to be re-built over 2013-14 will start from either the Europa League or (as most of us anticipate) the Champions League. That is progression.

We all know that we need some additions to the squad if we are in the CL or otherwise. So do the board and so do the football staff. We are in rude financial health (despite Paul 67 trying to keep a lid on it) and are in a position to keep progressing.

When the team we are about to build is broken up in 2-3 seasons time. I anticipate we will start building the new team on guaranteed Champions League football and we will not think twice about spending £5m on a player….

That is our plan, it relies on buying for value, scouting well and selling at a vast profit. Let’s stick to that plan a la Porto….

  16. I cannot understand all the negativity at the moment. Victor Wanyama and Gary Hooper both wanted to leave Celtic, I repeat WANTED to leave, Celtic did not force them out. The truth of the matter is that Celtic could not make any form of offer that would have kept both players at Celtic. Both players chose to leave.

Finding replacements is not a matter of picking up a catalogue and ordering what you need. As for the “just pay it ffs” line what happens when this player immediately becomes our top earner without having kicked a ball and the other squad members, who it should not be forgotten have just won a Double, ask for the same or better in light of their proven abilities. Do Celtic “just pay it ffs” to them all or do we have 1 happy player and 24 disgruntled players.

I have no information one way or the other about Celtics transfer policy but am prepared to accept that they are trying to address areas Neil Lennon wishes to strenghen. If anyone can provide proof, not speculation or innuendo, that Peter Lawwell or the board are deliberately withholding funds from Neil Lennon then I will apologise to them.

  17. The stunning silence from the Board on shadier aspects of the Scottish game merely gives grist to mills of the ‘Old Firm’ idea.

  20. Listening to Talksport yesterday I was annoyed at their smugness..

Never knew it was so biased.

Talking about the state of Scottish football Celtic were slated for not trying to get an all Scottish line up as in 67 as a reason why Scottish football is in such a bad state.

Mentioned all the good players leave Scotland and can only get a job at a championship club.

They must know their stuff right?

Said that SFA should insist that Scottish clubs have a max number of foreign players in the first team.

How blind they seem to be about their so called all English Premier League where managers from all over the world come and go spending millions on foreign players to try and get success, only to be trumped time and time again by a Scotsman at Man U.

Biggest contradiction for me was after blaming Celtic for not blooding their youngsters and instead looking for cheap signing abroad, they went on to mention Islam Feruz being the real deal at Chelsea.

Moved to London and then went to Scotland and then Chelsea.

As I say I never knew it was so biased.

    I do now.

    not in panic mode here……..yet

then again karagandy have scored 7 goals so far in c/l

    3 away from home

takes me away back to when mon played basel

parkhead had about 30000 fans at kick off

basel scored 2 mins at start of game

then the other 30000 turned up from the pub/work

all thinking celtic were 1 nil up

after hernrik got us back level

took henrik, sutton and sylla to take a 3-1 lead to basel

    then got beat 2-0 away

imho most people underestimated basel ability to beat us over 2 games

celtic do not have the top rated strikers that we had then

this whole season is being risked on these 2 games

heaven to forbid we are put out

the way the club is being run having to sell players to break even

Zbyszek – Legia have to fight this, as UEFA are trying to make an example of a “smaller” european club. They wouldn’t dare take on one of the really big clubs and the Italian ultras have been doing this stuff for decades.

Unfortunately, UEFA is just as corrupt as the football association in this country. If they weren’t, then they would have severely censured the SFA for allowing one club to continually breach rules and regulations.

    T4

  32. i’m neil lennon, i wasn’t claiming they would be dearer or cheaper, my point is we’ll get them at their correct market price, if a player is interested in us, he knows we are interested in him, then once we have guaranteed CL football, the player (if wanting to join us) may start making noises about moving to us. as there are only 5 days left in the transfer window do the selling club take the risk of him staying and not having as successful a season therefore price drops and that player will also have run down another year of this contact, again lowering his price, we offer what we think is an acceptable price and the club can sell or not, the wages we offer then aren’t being hiked by player agents claiming we need him for the playoff therefore give him an extra 10% ( for example). we all know once a players head is turned it becomes difficult to keep him. just look at hooper and wanyama for e.g.
