Magic money, Longmuir, Ahmad

BDO’s survey of British football clubs suggests control, if not complete sanity, has descended on Scottish football.  Most Premiership clubs surveyed predicted they would return to profitability over the next year.

On the back of Phil Mac Giolla Bhain’s article on former Scottish Football League chief exec David Longmuir’s bonuses, which are no longer payable, these are heady days for some clubs who have lived hand-to-mouth stuffing pork into Longmuir’s trough.  You better believe it’s financial Armageddon, for the former SFL man. The SFA will surely insist on inappropriate financial stain is left on our game.

Anyway………. It seems if I explain the structural gap between Rangers International’s earnings through season ticket sales and the costs of operating a football club which can facilitate circa 40,000 spectators on a regular basis, we can all figure why the gap cannot be bridged.  We are different because despite having enormously higher football costs, we can access enormously higher revenue streams.

On the other hand, explaining that Celtic’s operational costs need to be augmented by player sales and/or Champions League income, just to break even, and that player sales and/or Champions League income cannot exclusively be used for player purchases, amounts to a heresy against deeply held orthodox views.

Add in a reminder about the strategy which has made all the difference to Celtic – buying wisely, selling wisely, and sit back to watch a secular belief structure ignore the ‘every penny to be spent’ prediction and vent as though their deity has just been denied.

This stuff’s complicated, apparently, but paying attention to financial detail is not a required Obligation to support Celtic, so if it doesn’t float your boat, I’d start by demanding to know where all the Seville money went to….

I hear the Daily Record accompanied their – Imran Ahmad to sue Rangers International for £3.4m – story with a completely baseless story about Celtic losing out on the only transfer target they know about.  They were wrong on some of the Ahmad story (Charles Green may have produced the documents Ahmad would rely on in court, but suggestions they are in concert on this claim are wildly inappropriate).  Still, it plays into current orthodoxy on Charles Green.

Going on what they’ve written, they know nothing about Celtic’s transfer negotiations either.  Absolutely squat.  Percentage of Celtic fans who know the media’s game: 100%.  Percentage of Celtic fans who allow themselves to be influenced despite knowing the above……?

If these people have you panicking, look elsewhere for sympathy.  We have a team building strategy, it has delivered well thus far and it will continue to do so.  Buy wisely, sell wisely, spend every penny over a given business cycle.  Pretty straightforward, really.

Got to be worth more than 5%. Wonder if he can help with my mortgage?

  3. thats true canamalar, it’s a risk game, a huge factor will be the player himself, does he want to join a serie a club were he won’t be first choice or does he look at celtic who he knows are interested, will be in the champions league and he will be first choice.

on another noted, i see odemwingie deal fell through to the middle east, the club wouldn’t pay 1.6 mill for him, not sure what silly wages hes on but thats another option.

  4. Something on Ultras and the idiots from UEFA.

UEFA today decided that one of four stands at Legia stadium will be closed for the game against Steaua Bucarest in CL play off.

When Legia played in Wrexam against The New Saints, few guys lit the flares. Decision from today is consequence of breaking UEFA rules about piro.

Ridiculous decision. Many of those who were in Wrexam work in the UK.

CQN has been a fantastic site over the years but the last few articles have really stuck in the neck of this supporter.

Of course no supporter wants our great club to be put in danger from over extending itself. However to suggest we can’t go out and spend considerable money on a player, as we have such high running costs just doesn’t add up.

Lets just take Alfred Finnbogasson – Reports of £5mil have been suggested yet from Paul’s scribblings, we can’t afford him.

Why I ask, when we’ve just sold our top marksman for a similar fee?

I tell you what. Why not just rename Alfie Gary and give him the same wages offered to Hopper and no harm done?

Or are you now suggesting we didn’t even offer Gary Hooper improved terms, as we desperately needed the £5mil?

Perhaps the reason is we won’t offer £5mil, as the sell on fee wont be quite as lucrative? (Cool, so we’ll go 3.5mil on a potential failure) Again this sticks in the neck as he’s a proven goal scorer and much less of a gamble than some of the dross we’ve wasted money on recently.

Obviously no one wants to put the club in financial peril but come on we have money to invest. It’s time to stop the penny pinching and falling for the spin.

A lot of the supports problem is, we’ve been here before and left it too late only to be given platitudes which never help you win games

  9. Every Celtic fan is abhorred by the deep-seated, widespread and rampant corruption in the game in Scotland (and indeed through Scottish society).

It turns the stomach just thinking about how these people (Sevconians, Football Governing Officials, Referees, Politicians, The Media, Police and the Judiciary) are allowed to carry on using their secret handshake as the only guidance on what is right and wrong (morals? don’t make us laugh).

Just consider how galling it is for us to read as some other evidence is unveiled of their secret dealings, constantly trying to keep their ‘traditions’ strong whilst undermining others not of their sect (Catholics especially).

We all become so enraged when we see the corruption unveiled through decisions such as LNS, the attempts to slot Sevco into SPL etc… or read MSM stories like the Retard’s attempt to blame the torching of their precious bus on Celtic supporting hooligans or the policy of down-playing/ignoring the actual hooliganism as the Sevconians destroy some small country town centre (the list goes on and on and on…)

So, just consider for one minute how it would feel if you are on the board at Celtic having to deal with these officials, media and the like, every single day.

How many times must the members of the Celtic board feel like lashing out in retribution for yet another corrupt decision?

How many times have the Celtic board held back because they know only too well the levels of corruption they are up against every single day?

IMHO, it shows remarkable self restraint to not only resist the temptation to lash out, but to also continue on representing the club against such a formidable adversary.

The Celtic board will know better than most bloggers what they are up against. They live it every day.

I believe they have no real choice but to keep quiet and let the Sevconians and their followers self implode. No choice. To do otherwise would bring havoc down upon Celtic, more-so than any other club.

I say kudos to the board for having done an extraordinary job.

  10. canamalar i know what your saying, the team does need strengthening, but you only strengthen your business by paying the best/optimal price for a product, thats the same for any business. as i said, celtic will be in the driving seat regards negotiations come 29th august and they then will offer what they feel is the right price and offer wages on our terms rather than some agent who thinks we need his player before the play-off round hiking his wages up by say 10% because they think we are desperate.

  11. ellbhoy- The one over-riding question- Does Alfie actually want to play in Scotland?

If he doesn’t then no amount of (reasonable) money is going to get him here.

  12. I love the following saying, applied as it is to some people. Make of it what you will:

‘They know the price of everything but the value of nothing’

    Have a good day.

  13. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

‘The general desire of the Catholic Church’s clergy to check fanaticism about witchcraft and necromancy is shown in the decrees of the Council of Paderborn which in 785 explicitly outlawed condemning people as witches, and condemned to death anyone who burnt a witch. Emperor Charlemagne later confirmed the law. The Council of Frankfurt in 794, called by Charlemagne, was also very explicit in condemning “the persecution of alleged witches and wizards”, calling the belief in witchcraft “superstitious”, and ordering the death penalty for those who presumed to burn witches’

I don’t know the answer to that question for sure but he’s not dismissed the possibility.

However remove the name Alfie and insert any other it makes no difference as the premise of Paul’s articles suggest we needed Hoopers £5mil for running costs. Which must bring in to question to how seriously we wanted to keep him? Did we actually offer him improved terms or was it better for the club to lose him so we could cash in?

Timing is everything but I think our silence if it continues could ultimately damage our club. Supporters are rightly sickened by the corruption in our game but no response from Celtic just adds to the feeling of being taken for a ride. Especially after raking in millions from transfer fees, Champions League income and not re-investing significantly.

Makes you question to if we are more for the integrity of our game or the bottom line?

  17. Dontbratbackinanger……………….maybe you send that to FF…………..but would they get it??………..I doubt it!

  18. You can talk money all day long and it’s relationship to Celtic and all things Celtic but one thing remains true for us to approach this season without a goal scoring Hero to replace Hoops would be unthinkable for me.

Teams need goals to win games, that’s football…

  19. For me, it is not a question of either integrity or the bottom line. It is simply whether we can continue. For sure, if we say anything Jack Irvine’s cohorts will come out with all guns blazing. We will be the bad yins.

Comment of the tournament came from an Italian radio pundit [ after the England -Italy game ]

” Italy played well but failed to take a lot of chances . England were dreadful , they played hit and hope football. . The England Manager’s [ Pearce ] only apparent tactical input to the game was his attempt to inspire his players by singing the National Anthem louder than anyone else “

Given how bad we were v Elfsburg I dont see where the blase ‘we dont need a striker, theres no rush’ attitude that seems to be coming from Peter Lawwell.

Karagandy might be no good, but it would be good to get a proper goal scorer in the team for that tie.

Still Peter knows best, he wouldnt have the manager going into an important tie without the resourses required, of course he wouldnt…

  27. mea culpa,

I think that you have articulated Celtic’s position accurately.

There is no credible outlet for the club to complain.

Any protest would be turned back on us, with a vengeance and, more significantly, distract the attention from the wagon circlers.

Last season demonstrated the only source of power outside of Hampden.

That was the supporters of other clubs forcing their chairmen to rethink the Shoehorn strategy.

Whilst stopping short of Them having to apply for membership, it derailed the fast track.

An opportunity was lost this year, for a similar action, when further details of the corruption were exposed.

The Ogilvie re election should have been enough.

Under UEFA rules, clubs cannot take action against their Association and even if they could, ranks would be closed and the club(s) would suffer.

However, action should be taken, without directly involving a club.

Way back, when Canamalar was still in short trousers, I suggested on here that action could/should be taken by a shareholder(s), without any connection to the club, through the courts.

This would be a valid method for calling the SFA to account.

There is enough evidence of wrongdoing available.

This, however, brings us back to the main problem.

To date, not one vehicle for Justice in Scotland has delivered.

They have found the guilty, guilty, but justice has not been delivered.

And that, is the problem that Celtic, or any other club has.

The fans are the only ones who can have an effect, by voting with their feet.

Unfortunately, as the clamour for Cup Final tickets showed, our support would rather stand at Hampden and cheer as CO handed out the prizes.

It would appear that Celtic have no option other than being complicit in the scandal.

So too, are the fans who contribute their cash to the scandal.

Anyone who has read earlier posts from me will remember this sign off.

    BC or DC.

This means that the only honourable options for us are to shut up shop or get out of Scotland……..and neither looks likely to happen.

So,ifthe fans don’t act by themselves, then we must carry on playing our part in the scam.

  28. ellboy- In the case of Hooper, unless he signed a new contract we had to sell him.

If he was ever interested in signing one of similar (or better terms) I can only speculate about but by all accounts we did everything reasonable to keep him.

We did the right thing, and this will be the case for any other player in their final year.
