Magnanimous Aberdeen in awe of Celtic

177

When we think back on away wins this season, the result at Anderlecht will feature prominently in the memory, but the manner Celtic swept their nearest challengers aside last night deserves equal billing. It was a magnificent performance from front to back. Former Aberdeen captain and manager, Willie Miller, reckons this is the best Celtic team he has seen, while current manager, Derek McInnes, was magnanimous towards the victors.

This has been a huge and draining week for the players. Munich, then Hampden, then Pittodrie sapped energy and concentration, but there was no evidence of this during the game – which was Aberdeen’s first in 10 days.

Relief, therefore, that we face joint-bottom Kilmarnock at home on Saturday. What can go wrong at home to Kilmarnock…………?

The Dembele-Tierney, Tierney-Dembele links which led to the first two goals typified what is fresh and irresistible about Celtic. Moussa terrified the Aberdeen defence. His touch, predatory instinct and physicality is incredible. Kieran bought and sold Shay Logan for the second goal in a manner which the Aberdeen defender will find spooky well after Halloween. I’m sure he’ll be tweeting about it soon.

As Aberdeen traipsed off the field they were looking at a three point gap to third place, before Kilmarnock scored goal at Ibrox 24 seconds after their keeper saved a penalty.

If you remember the Only An Excuse-Larsson fixes the radio, sketch (below), you’ll know this was life imitating art.

  1. Just watched the David Edgar podcast.

    “Last night was banter year-esque”.

That bemused me. It suggests that at some point in the “journey” they, in his mind at least, ceased to be a laughing stock.

I’m trying to think when that might have been? The glorious win at Firhill that secured European football ( for the first time)? The home win against Progres?

If so, there’s bad news coming down the pike!

  2. All we need is a bit of stability, and a good European run to get us back.

    Another gem from the gormless.

No hope for these morons,is there?.

  6. Rangers sack Pedro Caixinha after just seven months in charge at Ibrox

Caixinha’s 229 days in charge is the second shortest in club history behind only Paul Le Guen’s ill-fated spell with the Light Blues.

Rangers have today brought to an end Pedro Caixinha’s catastrophic seven-month reign as manager.

The final straw proved to be Wednesday night’s 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock but in truth the writing was on the wall long before then.

Caixinha’s 229 days in charge is the second shortest in club history behind only Paul Le Guen’s ill-fated spell at Ibrox.

The Portuguese won just 14 of his 26 games in charge with seven defeats, including a record home loss against Celtic at the end of last season.

Under his stewardship, Rangers also lost at home to Aberdeen for the first time since 1991 and crashed out of Europe to Luxembourg minnows Progress Niederkorn for perhaps the club’s most embarrassing defeat.

Rangers failed to win three games in a row during his tenure and a poor home record has led to his downfall.

Caixinha’s side crashed out of the Betfred Cup on Sunday after a 2-0 defeat to Motherwell and fans laid the blame at Caixinha as well as some of his summer signings.

Big-money signings Carlos Pena and Eduardo Herrera have taken the brunt of criticism, while the likes of Fabio Cardoso have also come under fire.

Caixinha has also clashed with players including Michael O’Halloran and Kenny Miller.

His bust-up with club legend Miller saw the veteran sent to play with the Rangers U20 squad.

Now, after months of speculation that began in Luxembourg, the Rangers board has decided to act following holding an unscheduled board meeting.

Chairman Dave King has also come in for criticism, with some fans pointing an accusatory finger at the businessman for abdicating responsibility over the appointment of Mark Warburton’s successor.

Now the search is on for a new manager, with Rangers languishing in fourth place in the Premiership.

  7. Souness said everyone knew after 5 minutes of his first training session that PC is a dumpling, very dignified, wonder if PC will get money when he is not working for them.

  8. Hola Amigos!

Long time lurker and first time poster.

Phil, how come they can afford to get rid of him on a 3 year deal (apparently) or will it be another ‘he resigned’ moment?

Warburton and co seem to have settled quietly out of court on that one?

    Can you enlighten us please?

    Cheers.

  14. SOUTH OF TUNIS @ 11:56 AM,

Thot you were setting us up for “Blue Monday” there… One of my Favourites, still you ain’t that predictable. Another Legend passes:( Does embdee know which rocking roller took their Name from Fats?

Great game last night, there is something iconic for me in seeing us playing Aberdeen. Maybe the fact we both play in our first strips.

In KT & Moussa we have two of the finest prospects in Europe. Great to see these tremendous young talents combining for the first two goals.

The results of the past week or so has been interesting, we now see the League Table developing…

Celtic on top with Aberdeen clearly second best. Hearts and St Johnstone needing to put a run together to be anything other than mid-table mediocracy.

However the Third Place Euro spot looks interesting. Motherwell are there, having once again put a team together under a Manager that has made them very hard to beat, I can’t see last year’s third place team Sevco Rangers repeating their high (beginners luck?). Though for me it’s got to be Hibs, they have the quality and experience within their ranks to secure the Berth.

    Hail Hail

  15. Gods speed dearest Pedro….

You gave your all to the cause…

If the cause was taking the piss!

Mony a braw braw laugh you gave us…

    Braw.
