Manager and team must show stoic unity

1148

You can train to be a football player for years, hone your skills and work on your fitness, but there are situations you can never prepare for until you are in the spotlight.  Yesterday Mark Wilson had to field questions about his team-mates’ performance and his manager’s position, after another abject performance which drew criticisms from Neil Lennon towards the players.

Mark gave a textbook response to the BBC, “I don’t like slagging my team-mates off but we have to do better.

“Football is a result-driven game but we don’t want that [Neil Lennon sacked].  We are firmly behind the manager and we love working with him and the coaching staff.”

We should be in no doubt that harsh words are being spoken in the dressing room and team spirit must be awful, but the outside world need to see stoic unity.

  1. Morning all from gay Paree, where the sun is out on this lovely automn day.

What are the chances of seeing Commons playing on Thursday?

We are definitely missing that spark of inventiveness – not to mention the goals – that he brought to us in the second part of last season.

If there are any internal feuds going on, it’s time to bury the hatchet!

  3. Another big week for us, although they all are at the moment. Hopefully we can kick November off in better fashion. Surely the players must know that they need to raise their level of performance?

Is Commons back from suspension/ injury/ whatever sometime soon? We could d with some more creativity in the side.

  7. Was at the game and thought that we were nowhere near as bad as so many are saying. I have now just watched the highlights on BBC site and that confirmed my initial viewpoint. Had Forrest`s shot been an inch lower and Hooper taken the easiest of chances , we would have won. Not only that, we would , I believe, have won comfortably as confidence grew.

Therein lies the problem. Because we are so far behind in the League, the fans are desperate and the players begin to let fear rule their actions. Only answer is a run of vitories for us and dropped points for Them. Neither looks likely at the moment but we can live in hope and bycontinuing to support a team whose success means so much more than simply winning Cups and Titles.

Incidentally, for me, supporting Celtic is akin to voting for an unsuccessful political Party. Just because they lose does not mean I lose belief in what they represent for me (but if Celtic FC voted to keep Rangers in the SPL, they would no longer deserve my vote as they would no longer represent my views).

Hah! That post was only meant to say that it was only missed chances rather than an awful performance on Saturday!

If we play Commons in a 4-4-2, we need to drop Forrest.

If we play Commons and Forrest we need to play 4-5-1.

With the greatest respect who told you?

Players drink as well you know and for that tale you told people say Hooper and Commons are hitting the Glasgow club scene.

Lennon disciplined Stokes for missing a curfew and going on the bevy last season so it cuts both ways.

I’m not sure about your original post.

I think something has gone on but I wouldn’t necessarily say it was drink.

  10. Jungle Jim- I admire and agree with a lot of your sentiments but I think the perception is that some of the team aren’t trying.

Most of us have very fond memories of the Seville season- a season that ended trophyless, but not for want of effort on behalf of the team.

  11. Dallasnomore

That’s one helluva an allegation! Source?

In addition those who belive Lenny should go, who should replace him? Who would manage the team in the interim? I dont have a clue!!!!

  12. Something is badly awry at Celtic at the moment ?

Is it incompetence ? Bad management of the club ?? Inexperienced coaches ?? Probably all those are factors.

Add to that list the blatantly obvious fact that Neil cannot motivate the team. They wont play for him. Is it his personality ?

This season is a cakewalk for Rangers and disgracefully so. It is so painful to endure. We have had two transfer windows to solve our problems and we have brought in dross !

Rangers went out and signed Goian and Bocanegra, two decent enough , if not brilliant centre backs. What is it about Celtic that we cant spot a decent player (And dont cast up Kayal and Hooper, was last season a flash in the pan ?)

Just sort it Celtic and sort it before we are too far behind Rangers and trying to catch Motherwell!!!!

Too many fans are distracting themselves away from our own mess of a club and looking over at the trials and tribulations of our rivals.

Forget about the huns. We must get our own club in order.

I have been watching the Hoops from the 60’s and this is probably the worst team I have witnessed.

  14. A dark, grey and blustery morning here in North Ayrshire.

Feeling a bit dark, grey and blustery myself.

I thought at the time that Lennie was a mite previous with his, ” Gee I’m glad that bad patch’s behind us”, comments last week.

Whenever these harsh times come along, they always bring with them sinister tales of dressing room discontent.

We’re just thrashing around, trying to make sense of things.

Well, our too-brief resurgence began with a good result against Rennes.

Maybe we’ll really begin to turn things round on Thursday.

That’s me thrashing around, trying to make sense of things, you understand!

Not sure if anyone has posted this already but when I read it I immediately thought of Kayal and Ki sauntering back towards our goals as opposition midfielders flew past them. Perhaps Martinez could have a word with those two when he is finished with Maloney.

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez has explained why he’s held back Shaun Maloney.

Maloney was ordered to brush up on his without-the-ball skills after spending most of his career in Scotland with a club that dominates most of their matches.

“Maloney is not far off starting games,” said Martinez. “It’s just a matter of coming from a team, in Celtic, that only concentrates on what you do in possession that we have had to look at.

“What to do when you don’t have the ball is not a part of the game you tend to work on at clubs like that.

“So it is getting him up to the intensity you need in the Premier League. That is his settling-in period. The quality he has got is a real magic. He is ready now.”

  16. DBBIA

I honestly believe that players always try but when there efforts come to no avail it looks as though they have given up.Also, angry fans see what they want. For example, Ki , instead of running back feverishly to help out his defence might judge it better to move into midfield to give the beleagured defence an outlet. To some, maybe many, that would give the impression of not trying. Isincerely hope they are all trying!!

Good Morning to the Celtic Family from a dull overcast Central Scotland. It is no use us argueing and fighting each other we all want the same thing a winning Celtic team.We have to ask ourselves a question something is wrong at Celtic Park is Neil Lennon the man to sort it out and return us to winning ways? I myself very much doubt that he can, so in my eyes we have two choices carry on with Neil and the current management team doing this I think we will have gifted the title to Rangers and there rookie manager. The Second choice is get rid of Neil and his management team and bring in a more experienced manager dont say no one will come to Celtic we are a club with the potential to have 60,000 fans at every home game and we should be playing in the Champions league every season the fact that we are not shows me all is not right with our club.H.H.

  20. Smacking of almost suicidal desperation, running through recent postings has been a theme of ‘ roll on January when we can get things fixed’.

Blinded by a Walter Mitty obsession about a Rangers free planet, too many Celtic fans have simply lost the plot.

Why should this particular January transfer window be different from any other. Come January, regardless of how dire things are on the park, at the behest of his master, Peter Lawell’s first priority will be to ensure that the figures presented at next year’s agm are firmly in the black. The trick was performed this year by the ‘Trading’ of Boruc and McGeady. As an aside. Remember the howls of derision when the unpopular Jock Brown used the word ‘Trading’.

Unless there is a dramatic turnaround on the park, January coming’s book balancing act could be very tricky indeed for Peter. It is not beyond the bounds of possibility that by the time January comes, compensation packages for incoming and outgoing coaching staffs could come into the equation.

The above means, that as usual, signings, if any, will be made well into the latter half of the transfer window.

If the above sounds like my usual gloom and doom stuff, there is more to come. As prospects winning this year’s SPL title and the Champions League money ensured by it recede, Peter will be required to perform the same trick all over again in January 2113.

I haven’t been watching as long as you but are they worse than the 90’s sides? No. They have more talent collectively than the rest of the league at the minute but that talent is not harnessed properly and it appears to be unmotivated and completely shambolic.

There is something going on we cannot see but can only guess at.

    My guesses are:

A disconnect between players and management team for whatever reason(s).

Too many injuries to key players at one time affecting rhythm

Attitude problems with some players based on contracts, desire for moves etc

A clique who simply do not like the management and think by playing like this they’ll get the manager the sack and force through their big moves (they think).

A complete lack of confidence being sapped out of them weekly.

Now I have no facts here but they are my suspicions based on little things we hear and see on the park.

The bottom line is these players are MUCH better than 3rd place and 12 points (9 if they win their game in hand) behind.

The problem is that we cannot lose any more matches or even get a draw. Motherwell and Inverness away are the next two matches. On current form we will not win either game. We always get a hard game at Inverness and they’ll be sharpening their studs already. Motherwell under that wee rat will be exactly the same and watch out for a few honest mistakes this weekend and next regarding bookings and upholding the rules of the game (not to mention an bigger Fir park crowd filled with anti-Irish singing from supporters who don’t usually go to Motherwell games).

Celtic; a strong Celtic team would go to both these grounds and batter these teams but these Celtic players hide frequently and are cowardly far too often when thugs turn up to boot them off the park. If we go into both games and Forrest is being asked to pull Celtic out of a hole again it is an absolute disgrace.

4-5-1 in both games, ball on the deck and move at pace. No place for fancy Dan’s like Ki who slow the game down and hide when the going gets tough.

  22. Good morning gentlemen.

I would think benching Hooper would be a good idea at the moment. Something’s not right with him.

Commons showed early on against Hearts what we’ve been missing, shame the hun ref decided that his tackle was worthy of a red. If it had been any hun player it would have been a yellow and a pat on the back.

In fact, as ususal I noticed a complete contrast in refereeing at the weekend. Collum and Murray certainly didn’t seem to be working from the same rule book.

Sorry, it is this persisting belief that, without really proving it, we are somehow better than our results, that has hampered Celtic over the last four years and possibly beyond.

  27. “Joe Ledley says Celtic need to win their next 26 games”

Of course he didn’t really say that, but the BBC like a good ole negative Celtic headline, especially since their own team have flounced.

  28. celtic *o* lennon on

Why when we played so well away to rennes playing 4-2-3-1 did we straight away go back to the dreary 4-4-2 on the saturday to accomodate hooper? We should have stuck with the same formation, kept hooper on the bench (why treat him different than stokes?) and kept big vic in the team.

Too many changes of formation, too much loyalty to management favourites. Its just not good enough and the entire management has gone downhill. We will continue to lose points and wait far too long to do what has to be done right now change the management team. We might still have a chance to pull this back but have to move fast!!

Neil your a Celtic legend and always will be, but big Billy and Tommy were bigger Celtic legends and when things were going bad they had to go. Unfortunately its now your time to go as well no man is bigger than Celtic FC legend or not.
