Maribor fatigue levels

1176

While Maribor were clearly second best at home to Celtic last week they remain a potent threat to our season.  You can be sure they’ve watched every minute of every game Celtic have played this season and will have dissected each defensive lapse.  Our acknowledged weaknesses – primarily a defence which has yet to find cohesion – will be well-known to each of them.

The vast acreage of Celtic Park should suit the mobile, pressing, game Ronny Deila has brought to our play.  It will be difficult for Maribor to cover all defensive zones, so with Celtic certain to play without a target-man, I expect the visitors to concede territory on the wings, defend their penalty area and force Celtic to play through them.

We will inevitably leave space at the back, in particular down the wings.  How attentive we deal with this risk could determine the outcome of the tie.

Maribor’s schedule since facing Celtic on Wednesday suggests their biggest challenge will be to maintain energy levels late in the game.  Thursday will have been a rest day, only light training would have taken place Friday and the bulk of the first team had a league game on Saturday evening.  Yesterday would be another rest day, and they will travel today before a light job on Celtic Park this evening.

By contrast, the bulk of those who will start for Celtic tomorrow will have had normal preparatory training Friday, Saturday, Sunday, with some light work tomorrow.  Those who made substitute appearances on Saturday will not have made a significant debit on energy levels.

We need to keep the ball moving early on, curtail rest times and have Maribor accessing their reserve tanks as early as possible.

Well if they’re looking at the same reports as me on the BBC website then it looks like they’re misinterpreting what is being said. This was a poll of Scottish viewers on who they thought did best in the debate – nothing to do with undecided voters and their voting intentions. As always, I’ll wait and see what the polls on voting intention over the next couple of days say following the debate. After the last debate, which Darling won according to a similar poll, there was little difference in voting intention. As can be seen from the UK Polling Report :

  4. There was always going to be a late surge of Yes voters.

Will it be enough for victory?

    I really hope so.

Can’t understand Scottish people wanting to be represented by The Butcher’s Apron. Certainly can’t understand Scottish people of Irish descent wanting to be represented by The Butcher’s Apron. I do understand fear of change and the concept that the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t know. I have studied the Polls and whilst I think Ernie went a bit over the top at 2 to 1. I do expect the No vote will prevail this time. However if the margin is reasonably close, I can’t put a precise figure but say 57% to 43%, I think it is inevitable that Scottish Independence will come within 10/15 years.

You had me at “Butchers apron”. Agree 100%

  6. Having watched the Liverpool v Man City game earlier I realise that we’re not the only side with defensive frailties.

If Celtic had lost a goal like City’s third I’d have been livid.

    Celtic to win 2-1.

  7. Ernie,

Thanks for your considered reply to my thoughts, clear as they are.

Labour, if you can still call it that, in England and Wales, will be a pale shadow of its former self. It has lost its way and the Tory party will stroll to Westminster if the Scottish vote for Labour is removed from the equation.

The British Prime Minister should have been on that debating platform tonight. We know why he wasn’t – he has no mandate, and never has had a mandate, in Scotland. That says it all for me.

I’ve been on the journey and can see the desperation of a Labour minister telling Scotland we are better off with a British Tory government than a Labour Scottish government.

Those two paragraphs above sum it up.

I respect your view, but self preservation is at the heart of this for Darling and Co.

“Income tax for who Ernie? Not the top rate payers as you fine well know, Scots goverment has no powers to change top rate of tax, so what you are saying is tax the poor. Fine torie policy’s from you again Ernie”

    From Scottish Govt site:

    “Council tax freeze continues

    Downloads 21/02/2014 13:47

Scotland General Government People and Society

Council tax frozen for seventh year in a row”.

“Households across all of Scotland’s 32 local authorities will benefit from a freeze in their council tax payments for the seventh year in a row, Finance Secretary John Swinney announced today.

    http://news.scotland.gov.uk/News/Council-tax-freeze-continues-98b.aspx

I suppose the SNP Govt could have chosen to put up the top rate of Council Tax for those who can most afford it like Brian Souter, but suppose the risk would be that it might frighten away their wealthy supporters and you wouldn’t be wanting to do that now would you, be a dangerously almost, well, socialist kindof thing to do (shudder)….

Not making any predictions, but quietly confident about tomorrow.

With the the new Bhoys settled in and the injuries back, I predict Ronny D and the Two Johns to make a positive impact on the Champions League group stage.

“You had me at “Butchers apron”. Agree 100%”

Did he not have you before he even posted?

One of the problems I would have would be in giving my vote to people who keep telling me that they do not or cannot understand me.

It is hardly a winning electioneering format.

Nevermind, they can always blame thae English bassas, plastic Jocks, and any other form of non-McGlashan that does not possess the racial and attitudinal purity to be a true Scot, for their failures to convince.

  12. If not this time then for sure the next time…….

Should ‘no’ win I wouldn’t bank on getting another referendum any time soon.

    Why?

Well firstly the achievement by the SNP of gaining an absolute majority at the last Holyrood general election was remarkable. While as a labour voter I am far from enamoured by the labour party and its leadership I think they must be more successful than last time. The SNP may (probably will) be the largest party at the next election but they would not be able to pass a referendum bill.

Secondly there is no prospect of Westminster cooperating in another referendum should the vote be ‘no’ this time. They will consider the matter already tested and decided.

So for those committed to voting ‘yes’ I think you’d better get out there working damned hard to persuade folk like me to follow your lead.

    Good luck!

Have you thought about an Independent Scotland having a party that can an does understand you. Not only that but they may have a chance to make a difference?

Have you given any consideration to the Conservative Party pledge to redraw constituency boundaries. Reducing the number of seats in the North of the country and increasing the number in SE England? Is that of no concern to you?

  15. It seems that Alex Salmon is believed to have won the debate tonight.

    He lost the first one

I think the most important question will be when the viewing figures come in

ie how many people actually watched the debate.

I fear it may be low.

Despite all the rhetoric I imagine that regardless of outcome there will be a lot of disappointment when the dust settles. Promises made will not be delivered by either side.

As a yes voter I sincerely hope that the vast majority of undecided will come down on the yes side after tonight.

    Hi All,

Can I just say that it appears to me that the people of the no persuasion have a very selfish view of the world, most of their argument come down to how it will affect them and them alone, as for most of the yes people they have a more caring and giving nature in their posts.

    Ah!

The pig in a poke argument. All the guys who voted Yes, while not understanding me, will suddenly transform itself into a grouping that will offer me choices reflecting my interest. Why could they not do that during the campaign?

And the threat to re-draw boundaries and guarantee 1000 year reich of UKIP/Tory Coalitions is just part of the desperate Project Fear of the last few days of the Yes campaign

I daresay the Irish preferred that to the butchers apron.
