Maribor slight favourites

2143

Celtic will face Maribor from Slovenia in the Champions League play-off round.  Maribor, of course, played a critical part in the death of Rangers, when they eliminated Ally MsCoist’s team from Europe a few months after Craig Whyte took over from Sir David Murray.  Having heard the 6-1 aggregate result against Legia, they are already celebrating the draw.

Maribor gave Wigan two hard games in last season’s Europa League, winning their home tie and causing the FA Cup holders more trouble than expected in England.  They progressed to the knock out round before going out 4-3 on aggregate to Sevilla – a feat Celtic would not have been capable of. Right now, they should be slight favourites.

If you missed it, today’s earlier article on Lady Luck, HMRC and money is here.

Join the Celtic Graves Society, Fergus McCann and many more at Kilsyth Cemetery on Saturday, 18 August, to commemorate the final resting place of the great Jimmy Quinn. Full details below or at Celtic Graves.

    Tragic event. My condolences.

I didn’t know him but know several who did and who will be there this morning also.

May your friend Martin rest in peace.

Condolences to his family and friends.

  3. Re Ronnie.

Is it looking as though he may have already lost the dressing room? Hopefully not, but if he has this early, then there is no hope. Any sound bytes from playing staff re this? On the tactical front, I really enjoyed his philosophy and views , but perhaps he wanted to change too much too soon without having the skills within his playing staff to do so?

DD has set the agenda — he wants to see no bills / requests for extra funds.

He seems to have re-inforced this message by incentivising PL through a bonus structure.

DD is into arbitrage — get into assets that can be transformed in value.

PL is a second rate property sector bean counter who has no class.

He wants his bonus and will do anything to get it including destroying the club.

I am sure he has many talents but growing a company and growing a brand aren’t any of them.

We have excuses left right and centre — a veritable laundry list as shown on here.

Some are real, some are hyped up and some are imaginary.

A CEO is paid to minimise the problems and maximise our strengths.

He is paid to develop and enhance the company and the brand.

PL has not done this during his tenure at the club.

Just what would he need to do to get you asking questions?

If we don’t beat Maribor then you will not be able to give the EL tickets away.

If we do not beat them it will be 30K — actual — crowds at CP before the end of Sept.

For the record I hope RD is a success.

We need better fitness levels, better conditioning and coaching.

However we is being set up as the scapegoat for PL’s planned deep downsizing.

The magic number here is £30mill — if we win the SPL our T/O will not go below this.

As an outsider looking in this looks the rational explanation for the situation we find ourself in.

£15mill football budget with the player spend coming from the player sales of 12 or even 24 months before.

£10K pw will be the highest wage rate.

The only exceptions will be the captain and the CEO.

Interesting to see who will have the higher league crowds this season?

Us or the TFOD Tribute Act currently crawling out from under a rock.

Finally why are we not playing a game today?

Are we trying to maximise our CWG compensation payment?

  5. Twists

I think it’s too early to say this and in a regime change (which is what it is) then there will be some who don’t like that change. We only have to look at oldco and Le Guen for that.

Instinctively a more professional outfit acting less like rich neds and looking After themselves has to be the way.

Back the manager and let him lose those not up to it and bring in those who will.

  6. Technostress

Any smart phone gurus out there

    Minor thing but bloody irritating:

Set ” display” mode to go to sleep after 5 mins inactivity, or 10 or whatever. For some reason though, it does this for a day or two then defaults back to going to sleep after 15 secs.

Why won’t it do as it’s told? Anyone?

  7. Big wavy

Fully agree mate. I think the players need to buy into his philosophy whether or not they agree or don’t agree. Just that the body language of he players on Wed was concerning even at 0 0.

  8. Med @ 8.48

    Thanks for the reply.

No issue with the practice just interested in the real numbers.

Regarding FF I think the figure was closer to £2mill.

However we had paid a loan fee in previous seasons and there was his signing on fee.

  9. SFTB Wee prayer sent up for your friend Martin. Thoughts with his family and friends on this sad day.

  10. SFTB at 0846

Very moving post mate, beautifully and simply composed. Sorry for your loss, a prayer in your friend’s memory.

  11. Having worked with Norwegians for the last 20 years I know how thorough and professional they are, they all speak good English and are forward thinking and prepared to consider a counter argument. However, in the end if their mind is made up then woe betide anyone who crosses them.

The slackers in the dressing room better smarten their acts.

    Nonsense …really

What’s nonsense is paying a fortune for crap….that’s proven nonsense ….what we did last summer

I’m not advocating Russell et al as the answer …but if we are in such a straitened financial position as our signing policy would suggest then I’m suggesting we buy some homegrown players …players who want to play for CFC …will not take time to settle and are proven in the league we play in

Your simplistic suggestion..x/ y etc is IMO nonsense

    08:46 on 9 August, 2014

Normally at this time on a Saturday morning, I would be heading out to 5s with a bunch of lads, old and not quite old yet, who have been playing regularly together for varying lengths of time.

    However, not today.

Today, I am just about to head out to a funeral of one of those regulars, Martin Livingstone, who died in a tragic accident in Glen Etive last week.

All the roller coaster Celtic emotions of the last week will have been missed by Martin, and his family would have paid scant attention to them as they get on with dealing with their grief.

If you can spare a thought this morning from your own busy lives, could I ask you to say your prayers, wooden or otherwise, for a good man that is laid to rest today.

    Thank You.

Tragic. Know his mother Molly from St. bridgets. She will be devastated.

Prayers said. may he rest in Peace.

  14. Pogmathonyahun aka Laird of the Smiles on

SFTB, sorry to hear about the loss of your friend Martin, may he rest in peace. Losing a relative or a friend is bad enough when you are expecting it but when it happens unexpectedly it is a lot worse.

  15. ....PFayr supports WeeOscar on

Slackers in the dressing room….defo need sorted

Deila’s selections and tactics in the Legia games were amateurish at best …he has a lot to prove

At the moment our decent team from last season …look like a Sunday league outfit

  16. Madmitch very well said.

We get pumped by a low level team and then land lucky.

A normal football team would would strengthen quickly and firmly.

What do we do? Concentrate on selling anyone half decent ahead of another crucial tie gifted to us.

And what do many of you do? Praise this.

As we have seen the money will not be reinvested. It will disappear into the ether.

Celtic have long since stopped being a football club. I read the obsession many of you now have with sell on clauses etc.you are now so pre conditioned to care about the balance sheet that you have forgotten why it’s important. None of the money we get gets reinvested in the team. So why do you care?

All of the gnashing of teeth doesn’t matter either. Lawwell and go don’t care about the support. The only language they know about is money.

So let’s stop giving them money of any kind.

And poor Ronny. His career has been ruined by this. But he was stupid enough to sign up to it.

    Bye bye Ronny.

  17. ....PFayr supports WeeOscar on

What has Le Guen done since being hunted from the Huns ….nothing ….suggests he was a dud

He cannot be held up as an example for giving a floundering manager excessive time

  18. Pfayr how are we in a straightened financial position. Why even the board, as complacent and arrogant they are, told us how fantastic a position we are in. So why the hell are we still selling our best players even after getting pumped?????????

  19. Has anyone else noticed how KevJ comes on and makes a very controversial statement then sits back waiting for the reaction?

    Take this morning for example.

At 8:40 he accuses DD and PL of stealing money from the Celtic support.

At 9:09 A full half hour later and having had no responses, he posts one word . . . Bye.

In other words . . . Nobody biting, so back to reading the Daily Record.

    KevJ –

Face it brother. Nobody takes you seriously any more apart from TSD and Hugh Keevins.

  20. Silver City 1888 on

I just spotted the short lived article before this one. It set me to wondering why HMRC didn’t set precedence with a club in England that doesn’t have the deep set protection offered to Rangers in Scotland. They can’t be chasing Rangers for the money, unless they are going to go after the players..

  21. SFTB,

Will remember your friend with a wee prayer today. May he rest in peace.

    big wavy,

Couldn’t agree more and said as much yesterday. How we inculcate a true professional mentality into every player who dons the jersey has to be the first priority. That means for some, I’m afraid, a whole new approach to life, with regards diet and fitness as starters. It should be the way of life that is begun from the first day a lhad steps into Lennoxtown. Hopefully, our manager can get the first team squad to respond. I would imagine the likes of Pukki and Johansen will have been reared in such a fashion.

  22. ....PFayr supports WeeOscar on

    Neganon

I don’t think we are …my premis is that that is what is being suggested

  23. Big wavey. Are you not paying attention? Ronny is out of his depth and only there to be controlled by lawwell. Already ronnys empty rhetoric sounds hollow amped already he has run out of excuses.

It isn’t good enough to let our good fortune cloud the almighty disaster that was the legia games.

  24. SFTB – sorry to hear that. Puts whatever petty football related ‘worries’ we have in to perspective.

Condolences and thoughts with you and the Livingstone family.

  25. PFAYR

Let’s agree to disagree. You seem to play up the ease of which a local hire can step up to play for celtic after a few years at hibs, Dundee or some other godforsaken mob we hump constantly.

Our history is littered with enough proof that many if not most can’t.

Pukki, Balde and Derk didn’t prevent us romping the league last year. We could play the reserves in Scotland and I guess we d still win the thing. That’s not our pain point.

Guys who can look at ease in Europe and will develop is our market.

  26. Neganon –

I honestly believe Celtic will spend big before the window closes.

    Absolutely no doubt about that.

Expect a minimum of 3 new faces.

  28. Pfayr agreed. Celtic have made vast profits in the last couple of years (even they could t hide it all). We have no debt. A very low cost finance arrangement.

And there are many on here salivating at adding more to the bank balance.

    Why?

Go and have a look in the mirror at what celtic have made you become. Proud to be a tim eh? Proud to crow over this needless and hapless decline?

I have said it before we are all to blame for propping up this failed regime at celtic.
