Celtic will face Maribor from Slovenia in the Champions League play-off round. Maribor, of course, played a critical part in the death of Rangers, when they eliminated Ally MsCoist’s team from Europe a few months after Craig Whyte took over from Sir David Murray. Having heard the 6-1 aggregate result against Legia, they are already celebrating the draw.
Maribor gave Wigan two hard games in last season’s Europa League, winning their home tie and causing the FA Cup holders more trouble than expected in England. They progressed to the knock out round before going out 4-3 on aggregate to Sevilla – a feat Celtic would not have been capable of. Right now, they should be slight favourites.
If you missed it, today’s earlier article on Lady Luck, HMRC and money is here.
Join the Celtic Graves Society, Fergus McCann and many more at Kilsyth Cemetery on Saturday, 18 August, to commemorate the final resting place of the great Jimmy Quinn. Full details below or at Celtic Graves.

NegAnon2 not one of your more intelligent comments “money has disapppeared into the ether” Can you read a balance sheet do you read the accounts? Not your favourite subjects I know but when talking about money disappearing that’s where you look and supply proof. I understand you may not like where the money is going but into the “mythical ether” it ain’t. BTW what is your plan for the way forward? Not what we should’nt be doing but what we SHOULD be doing .Hail Hail Hebcelt

Corkcelt. I’ve never been Ina clique before. Is it nice?
67 heaven. Naw I’m just stupid like everyone else on here.
It does my nut in that people abbreviate every other word. WTF?

Good morning, sir ……. How the devil are you this fine morning…………
Neganon – one last thing – they don’t care about football results? So this is all about money?
I’ve read on here that DD gets £600K a year in dividends – not sure if that is true, but let’s say it is, and that PL gets circa £1million a year in wages and bonus, again, not sure, but let’s say it is. Now, these amounts are excessive. However, for Mr Desmond, £600K could be just as easily earned by him by literally some Horse Trading in KIldare or similar. Pete may well be after the huge bonus, but do you not think that he might look at the product on the park and think, hmm, if this doesnt improve and we spend 3 out of 5 years without CL football I’m not getting a bonus – so if he is money driven then it is surely still in his interests to have a good team on the park? N’est pas?
Tom- As you know we sold Lou Macari in 1973, quickly followed by Davie Hay, ending any ambitions of the Celtic Board to stay at Europe’s top table.
This has been our transfer policy ever since, why it has taken Neganon so long to work this one out is beyond me.
Corkcelt
Don’t join the dark side. It’s one big glass case of emotion in there and there’s no way back…
As Iv’e said before, FF is a fine shot stopper and has saved more than his share of pens; but he is weak in confronting cross balls and for such a big unit, does not dominate his box. That said, we have negotiated a very good transfer fee. Good piece of business. If CG stays fit, we won’t notice any difference.
Hebcelt. Actually I am a qualified accountant. When say ether I mean that celtic have always used clever accounting methods to depress profits etc. reserves are created, exceptional one off write offs (that happen every year). Nothing illegal. But even the language they have used is clever. We have become used to net debt habpve not we. This gives the impression of always being in debt. But clever old celtic use it to frighten you when in rwl it’s they have plenty of money in the bank. It’s a bit like having 10k in the bank but when asked saying you have a nt debt of 90k cos you have a 100k mortgage. Technically correct of course but the mortgage is long term and try turned and affordable.
We have been conditioned like this to frighten us and cow us and make the unacceptable acceptable.
This site has been a part of that conditioning.
Selling FF just now weakens us for the Maribor game ….if we don’t reinvest the immediately …
Invest properly and quickly and we may improve …that has to happen

Being a Celtic Supporter is not being stupid, and you may be many things, but you are not stupid ….. just a passionate Celtic supporter, and, indeed, one of the most pleasant CQNers I have ever met ………
No surprise that Fraser sees his career progressing more in the EPL. His taste of the national squad has clearly left him wanting more – and we all knew he would head back south one day. I had hoped he would give us another season, but best of luck to the big man.
Now that we are back in the top tournament, we must ensure we have a team on the park that can get us to the group stages. I don’t know anything about Ronny’s recruitment plans – but I hope they are being progressed pretty swiftly.

Correct, and we should already have a list of targets
Morning Bhoys it is interesting that so many on CQN appear to believe they could run Celtic better than our CEO what utter nonsense. It was expected by many with the demise of Rangers Scottish football would be in big trouble and Celtic would suffer more than others but that has not happen financially Celtic have never been stronger. Now I accept on the park we are not looking so good but we have a new manager trying to bring in new methods and that takes time we also are missing the energy of Broonie from our midfield we will sign players in this window but remember our season started before other teams due to the CL qualifyers and getting the right players in takes time it isnt easy also the inflated price for very average players has to be delt with.So I remember the saying that you didnt know what you had until you lost it could well apply to big Peter. H.H.
Inside spl tweeting big Fraser’s sell on clause is only 12.5%.
Ah robertressell you are missing some vital points.
Firsly DD does get those divs but they are incidental. His investment is for the day celtic get into the epl where his investment will triple in value and he will sell in no heartbeat.
As for PL he gets his many based on the financial performance of the club. Now you would think that would be connected to football results right? Well you see peter thinks he has stumbled on a solution. Just trade players and make money. You don’t need to care about actual results that way.
Oh and hbcelt I did suggest a way forward. Read the CQN magazine. It’s pretty simple but involves football results and talking to supporters so it will never catch on.
Gordon J
Or another way, come to us as a third choice player, develop, play against the worlds greats in the champions league and get promoted to your national team.
FF is living proof of when the strategy works well.
Still wish he could have stayed until after Maribor though…
The apocalypse scenario:
A major knee jerk spend to mollify disgruntled Tims on C.Q.N.
Keep the heid,Pete.
Can you keep yer heid while all around are losing theirs and blaming it on you?
Damn sure you can.
Lemons passion. Woohoo. What a deal maker PL is. Let’s all celebrate shall we?
67Heaven doing fine now after yesterday’s news. Attended our local Tattoo last night’ main guests were a team of Vikings down from Shetland told us that “Deila the Viking” would be a sucess. They were such a mean looking bunch I decided to go with that – time will tell see you next Sat. Hail Hail Hebcelt
Ah macjay1 you advocate no spend. Splendid. Tell me what shall we do with the money?
Is Peter Lawells personal bonus plan objectives in the public domain ?
RT
Lawwell’s financials are not linked to success on the football field …they should be
Sell a few players …don’t spent the proceeds …team weaken …football crap ….financials are good …bonus paid

Sorry to hear of the tragic loss of friend, may he rest in peace and may all his family find comfort..

When it comes to creative accounting, Celtic were certainly dragging their heels behind oldco ……… Hahahahahahaha ……. You need to get out more…… Try roaring out “mon the Cellik”. …it’s great for the creativity
Joe Fillipi so you are saying that what happens on the pitch doesn’t matter?
A true PL acolyte.
I could run celtic better than PL and so could many.
I thought FF might have gone in January with the WC coming up.
67 heaven try roaring mon the celts at CP and the stewards will throw you out…..,,
Neganon
Ho hum , the bosses are tossers , they love Rangers , they don’t care about results.
Are there any other businesses / sporting organisations where their Boards behave in this manner? Barca, PSG, Aberdeen, Dundee Utd or is it uniquely Celtic?
Keep the claptrap coming, seems to me your bleating is immature in extremis , getting funnier and funnier … Still your burden of carrying all the answers to Celtic’s problems must be challenging and please skip the reference to the CQN article where it was all set out ……. Still thank god for the internet , otherwise I would be avoiding listening to your claptrap down the pub
HH
Big wavey. In the public domain. Don’t make me laugh.

That’s the ticket …. :)
Ellbhoy. This is uniquely Celtic. Most other football clubs know that they are football clubs.
Neganon
“You are also labouring under the misapprehension…….”
Err..naw ahm no. Which is why I stayed PL has different hopes and dreams …..
I stand by my opinion though that he ain’t stupid, and he will be well aware of the consequence of continued failure. Anyhow bud, in a very short space of time, we shall be able to discuss further.
