Izzy may need a rest and has a big change to how he’s asked to play. Cutting inside and playing that ball inside means the player always has to be there to receive. He played one tonight and whomever was supposed to receive wasn’t there! There lies the “decision making” attribute required.
Love how Berget helped him out

Just in. Was in ocaseys here in The Hague. A few celts, a couple of Huns who behaved after a few glares.
Great result and I think performance. I can’t figure out if Maribor or poor or we are good but doesn’t appear we have much to fear.
We may yet get into the CL.
But please celtic. A striker. For the love of god. A striker…..ll
Berget reminds me of Alan Thompson – no great pace or skill on the ball but very effective and involved in a lot of goals. We need that as we relied on Commons far too much last season. With Berget and McGregor we look like we have another two. Maybe not as good a cross as Thommo.

I’ll leave the analysis to the experts, however, that was one of the best performances in the CL for a long time – mature, disciplined, and just bloody wonderful for us Celtic supporters. Great shift by everybody and the same will be needed next week.
I am back in Scotland on business next Tuesday (what a coincidence!), so will be able to use my (largely unused) season book to attend – Ah cannae wait!

Johansen I think is Scott Brown in disguise. I was tempted to say Brown with more technical ability and better passing but Brown has improved dramatically over the past couple of seasons. But he’ll get there and surpass him with the right input and bulking up a bit.

Problem with signing a striker, is that he’ll have to be the sort that likes to play up front on his own.
Stokes wasn’t great tonight, but he worked hard and you can’t be outside the box and then in the box every time.

IMO, Izzy played well in the first half but fell out of it in the second half. Another guy who has maybe played too much football without a proper break. It has been quite humid over here in Croatia, not a million miles away from Slovenia. I think this takes a toll on the players at the best of times. Even the Maribor players looked as if they were struggling a bit with the heat.

Was the game on HRT or a satellite channel?
(Before anyone comes back with a smart comment, HRT is the Croatian Radio and Television service)
Couple of mistakes made by individuals tonight. Unlike against legia they weren’t punished.
Why? Because the team was organised. When that happens individual mistakes are covered By hard working team mates.
Another observation was the way we defended corners. Maribor scored over half their goals this season from headers. Yet they looked unable to defend cross balls early on and we had the measure of them in our own box.
We got it right for the most part. Get us a striker who can win high balls and we could do Ok this year.

Why is everyone bumping their gums about counter attacking from Maribor ? 0-0 next week and we re through . We don’t need to be gung-ho and they have to come at us now.
Get some pace into our side please and they can worry..

We are not conditioned for that!
The Celtic way?
It is to go forward.
What was the attitude of the players and the fans against Benfica when we were 2-0 up a few years ago and that score would have seen us through?
The players did not know how to sit on that lead and kill the game and the support could not stand seeing the team trying to do that!
Think we will need to be 3-0 up again before we relax.

Danny Lafferty was indeed at Celtic.
Never played for the first team. An unused sub once at mcdiarmid park in the Mowbray era was the closest he came to pulling on the hoops.
But the difference between them is that teams sometimes target Izzy as short and think he maybe vulnerable to balls over the top. Now and then he doesn’t handle it.
Ambrose problem is Ambrose. He creates his own mistakes from positions of great security. Then just when it is least appropriate and there seems to be no pressure he pick his moment.
he just needs to cut these out and he will be a really good player.

Craig Anthony Gordon is a better goalie than the dearly departed Fraser .
Anyone agree?
