Mark Lawwell first recommendation to Celtic

338

Ange Postecoglou, by his own words, worked closely with Mark Lawwell during his time at City Football Group’s Yokohama F. Marinos and had a big influence in the appointment of our new Head of First Team Scouting and Recruitment.

The tie goes deeper, though.  It was Mark Lawwell, who a year ago, told his closest contact at Celtic about an Australian he knew that was working in Japan and who would be a far better appointment than Eddie Howe.

The then incoming chief exec was understandably cautious about taking this recommendation, preferring to wait for Howe, a known entity.  When that line of pursuit was no longer open, the club took Mark Lawwell’s recommendation.  It was a radical decision and a huge risk, made at a time when two chief execs were in the building, with differing views.

The relationship between manager, head of scouting and chief exec can make or break a club.  They flourish whenever all three are working in sync.  On that basis, I’m encouraged by where we are ahead of the summer transfer window.

Uefa’s news yesterday, that Russian clubs will not participate in European football next season, confirmed that the cinch Scottish Premiership champions will gain automatic entry to the Champions League group stage.  We will talk more about what this means financially to the club at the appropriate time.  What you can be sure of is that a budget spreadsheet at Celtic Park has been updated, the recruitment team has been assembled and there is a clear sense of ambition at the club.

If Mark Lawwell’s player recommendations are half as good as his managerial suggestion, we can look forward to an interesting season.

No one on the outside knows how Celtic is run, all the conjecture is composed to fit personal bias & agenda – no proof whatsoever! Where there is proof it shows a successful & well managed club. Noises-off are an irrelevance.

    ————————————————————————————————–

It is actually quite clear how Celtic is run. It is run on the Desmond/Lawwell agenda of profit/bonus/dividend.

Successful in our own tiny pond, absolutely, but a complete irrelevance on the European stage. The basket case of a club across the river appear to have no such problems.

Off the park, more games than ever being sold out, but no chance whatsoever of the 51 year old main stand being upgraded on Dermot Desmond’s watch. Clubs throughout Europe upgrading their facilities, clubs with ambition and a growth agenda (copyright MM). But not down Kerrydale Street.

Board Loyalists and Board Sceptics will just have to agree to disagree. Not being liquidated is not a badge of honour.

Someone mentions dynasty and everyone and their dog joins in – pathetic.

Once minute some are licking Ange’s backside, the next vitually calling him a liar, because he backs this appointment.

The hatred of the Lawwell name by some is sickening and un-Celtic like.

Of course it is only the on-line fraternity that are lit-up and they represent such a tiny fraction of the Celtic support. The only good thing is that maybe we’ll get a break from the ten year old Res 12 nonsense for a while – a pointless & failed crusade drummed-up by folk with too much time on their hands, and of which 99% of supporters don’t even know, or, care, about.

    Welcome home Mark!!!!

ML gets a job at CFG.

ML’s father as CEO signs off a number of deals where we buy or pay loan fees for a number of said CFG’s stiffs — the good / the bad / the ugly / the lot.

Some amounts of real money change hands — from us to them.

ML still continues to have a job at CFG.

ML’s father moves on and others are given his responsibilities.

ML stops having a job at CFG.

And gains employment at a company where his father still has significant influence.

    Not a great look.

At least Jr got a good CV out of it.

You could almost imagine that it had all been planned.

Agree 100%. Sense & reason are a heady mix.

The Lawwell name is a red rag to a bull for some. Who would they have run the club? – they have no answers. Of course some would like a supporter-run club, but of course what they really mean is joint enterprise between the Trust & the GB….God help us, we’d be reduced to a ‘whelk stall’ in jig-time. It would be a whelk-stall with strong political views operating out of St Roch’s ground…….but there’d not be a Lawwell, or, “suit” on-site, or, in sight.

Not a fan of Peter as I have said but I think anyone who would state that Ange is some sort of patsy for the board on this clearly underestimates the man.

He is no ones fool and the appointment of Lawwell junior comes with his blessing. It’s not as if the guy has been working at Tesco for three years….

  12. If someone with the background of Mark Lawwell had been appointed by Old Firm FC, the Media would be hailing a sensational capture and many on here would be wondering why Celtic couldn`t have done similar.

I can only think of one reason why his appointment is being so negatively received by some on CQN.

For those of us who have great angst whenever a newspaper has a headline about which Celtic player is leaving and who is going to ‘snub Celtic’ we should all remember that for most newspapers today they only thing they get right is the date at the top. I see on announcing the death of Jimmy Bell, the Sun says he was 69 and the Mail says he was 57, how hard can it be to get even as basic information as a person’s age correct? We can forget any of these newspapers ever having any scoop on Celtic!

Celtic could be getting the best deal possible from Park’s. The Board’s fiduciary duty is to get the best deal for shareholders. There again, maybe it is a long-term contract and can’t be broken now – all perfectly plausible & reasonable explanations. Notwithstanding, surely it is ‘small beer’ in the grand scheme of things? It also shows that we are not small minds who knee-jerk!

We’ll have a squad to replenish

  24. Hoping ML can use his extensive contacts through the city group. And assuming he’s not only been working with City themselves hopefully he has knowledge and contacts that don’t only suit a UAE or Saudi style budget.

Who his father is, is irrelevant, he’s vastly more qualified than his dad to be having input in who the club sign (although I’m sure his father ran signings past him).
