McCoist on wrong end of history

1325

You and I have been in some dark places.  While we remember winning nine-in-a-row by brilliant scouting, tactics and athletic endeavour, we also remember when that proud achievement was violated in 1997 by a considerably less wholesome achievement.

At the end of season 1995-96 Celtic finished second but lost only one game.  I convinced myself that our world was about to be put right.  Tommy Burns’ team would go one step further and win the league in 1997; it had to happen.

It didn’t.

Today I don’t want to talk about the reasons why we didn’t win the league in 1997, we will discuss that in the weeks ahead, but that season taught us the lesson that simply wanting something to happen doesn’t make it likely.

I thought of those dark days yesterday when I hear Ally McCoist’s rallying call:

“We’re going to march right through it

“I’m as positive today as I have been in a long time.

“This institution has been around for 140 years and I want it to be here for another 140 years.

“You’ll see what Rangers mean to so many people. We are really looking forward to the game.
“We have the best fans in the world.

McCoist loves his club the same way his good friend Tommy Burns loved his, but irrespective of the challenge he faces in the league from Neil Lennon’s awesome team, there is nothing McCoist can do to ensure his club survives until the end of the season.

When you’re on the wrong end of history there is nothing you can do about it.

  1. A serious and genuine question………(for once!)

Amid all the ‘sturm und drang’ of yesterday’s, scoddish-backed, Nuremberg Rally at Asbestox, was there any sign of the oft’ discussed (on CELTIC QUICK NEWS anyway) lesser-spotted…… ‘Decent Bluenose’….??????I could never discern the precise definition but it used to warm the blood of a few…. The fabled ger with a heart o’ gold and a benevolent sense of what is Right and Wrong???

Well, did he or she make themselves heard yesterday??

Any sensible, fair-minded faction come to the fore????

    Any signs of realistic contrition???

    Anything?????

We have every right to enjoy the currant huns predicament but I am still very much interested to see or hear of any progress they might be making in putting their…. ‘Big….’ Hoose in order.

If there was anything at all, surely that would represent what is really important ‘for the good of Scottish football’ ???

As I say, genuine question…….yesterday was surely the Day for an alternative fan’s manifesto…..if ever there was one.

    Just asking……

  2. One question bhoys what has happened to rent a gub David Edgar? Has Dark Mingwall eaten him?

Would dearly love to hear him bleating Athletico the moment.

  4. Paul,

I see Media House have been on full throttle this weekend. The front page of the Sunday Times carries a story with a source in HMRC claiming they could do a deal with the administrators of The People. Other titles also feature variations on this theme.

Anyone who thinks that HMRC won’t do a deal is being niaive, especially now that political pressure is put on them. Taxdodgers FC will come out of this in tact and with the minimal punishment they (the establishment) think they can get away with.

  7. So the Sky Sunday Suppliment group of English football journalist are able to give open balanced view-points on the rangler “crisis” ,while our local scottish clowns are still floundering around with feeble excuses and false stories.

Yes I seen that, I’m starting to think why are the panelists on SSB starting to agree with us regarding them getting punished, they have never done us any favours, so maybe they know something we don’t.

    Agreed.

I’ve always had a gut feeling they’ll be helped out but a few guys in here seem to think they’ll get liquidated, but as I say, Protestant country and they are the establishment team so it’ll never happen.

Peter Lawwell will regret Rangers comments when Parkhead is half empty By Gordon Waddell on Feb 19, 12 08:10 AM.

Celtic may think they can live without Rangers. But they can’t live without competition.

Peter Lawwell can tap dance all over their grave as much he likes but he’ll regret it when his stadium sits half empty.

I’ve always wondered where this so called affinity comes from in regards to Barcelona among Celtic fans. My thoughts were because of how the club’s histories are similar in the fact they represent a community. Then there is also the style of play both teams adhere to. I dont know why I’ve always preferred Real and I’ve always wondred if I am somehow doing something wrong in preferring them. Agreed as a neutral Barcelona play truly beautiful football, what annoys me about them of late is their constant moaning and trying to get players booked, especially that Busquet guy, if ever there was a sneaky snake of a player its him.

  12. Rubicon,

As I no longer live in Scotland, I’m spared the excesses of the local print meeja but I purposefully tuned into Shortbread yesterday following the Killie game.

In the broadcast message management battle, they were doing a very ‘professional’ job in defence of the ancien regime…..

Even by their usual standards, I felt they crossed a line yesterday.

  13. It’s a given that their is no money at ibrox, and if Phil is correct ( when is he not) they don’t have enough to pay salaries at the end of this month! However when I read the papers, and I know I shouldn’t ! All I see is “when we get out of this” and “how this will make us stronger”

What exactly would have to happen for them to exacape liquidation? What is the chances? And am I correct in thinking that if they go down they then have to hope that they are allowed back into league structure let alone the SPL?

Der tax dodgers are on 61pts on the league table.

Rimtimtim was right, last night, and I owe him an apology.

  16. Also Potential investors ??? Surely irrelevant? If they buy rangers before liquidation you still are liable to 75mill!! If afterwards then you play in div 3?? I really need to stop reading this nonsense! Or am I getting this wrong?

  17. Spending the weekend in Leith at my daughter’s (I can see Easter Road from her flat).

What a glorious morning it is with the sun shining brightly. Just heading to King’s Whark for the best breakfast you can buy, then meeting bhoy ( who backed Killie at 7/1 then won £1,700 with five numbers on the lottery) and heading to The ground. The weekend can only get better!

This is the week when the Huns went bust, we will rejoice and be glad in it!

  18. Right, away for supporter’s club meeting then hopefully through to Easter Rd. Fingers crossed for a ticket. The result of the game is inevitable!

‘Might be a useful day to remind Mr Salmond and the SFA of sectarian chanting, and the widespread reporting of it in today’s national press, at Ibrokes yesterday. Just in case they take their eyes off the ball because of the MBB’s behaviour.’

That singing, and the attitudes it espouses, is part of the fabric of the country. Salmond wants it to continue.

‘Rangers must continue for the future of Scottish football and for the fabric of the country’

  21. It has been confirmed that Rangers (in Administration) FC has deliberately withheld the payment of legitimate taxes since May 2011. Therefore Rangers (in Administration) FC has sought and gained an unfair advantage over their football competitors. No club – other than Rangers (in Administration) FC – should be relegated from the SPL this season. Play Fair Mr Doncaster. Play Fair Mr Regan. Play Fair Mr Ogilvie.

Fortunately HMRC is a UK organisation.

They won’t be influenced by the huns position in Scottish society.

  24. “ALLY McCOIST last night threw his weight behind a full inquiry into Craig Whyte’s timebomb takeover of Rangers as he began putting distance between himself and the club’s owner”

Now if he throws his full weight behind this that is serious, the MBB could get severely injured!

I see the expected bigotfest went to plan yesterday. In my opinion this was not so much a show of solidarity for RFC but more of a message aimed at us saying WATP. They worry more about Celtic’s accendancy and the bragging rights that come with it. They despair at the thought of long term dominance from the east end. So in their darkest hour the huns revert to type and further disgrace the club they purport to love by belting out their banned double album. There really is no hope, but then again, RFC bred and nurtured the mob who are killing them. I’m sure some Greek philosopher wrote a story fo this type of tragedy 2000 years ago…..WWTP?

  29. Good to see a few of the papers condemning the sectarianism at Ibrox yesterday; it did seem inevitable they would resort to type.

Once again shame on the BBC-No comment, no condemnation just praise for the terrific backing the fans gave the team. 2012 in Scotland.
