McLeish frank admission, Aberdeen get it right. Will we?

1909

BBC’s series, Scotland’s Game, has become compulsive viewing. Tales of redemption for Celtic, Hearts and others, and tales of woe for some. Last night’s episode had a few remarkably frank admissions.

One which caught the eye was former-Rangers former-manager, Alex McLeish, who admitted his title winning team “would’ve been behind [Celtic]” had they not funded their squad through EBTs. We should all take note for when the Big Tax Case reaches the Supreme Court.

Pleased to see the appropriate amount of damage done to Rangers by majority owner and chairman, David Murray, was correctly attributed, with one or two character defects throw in for good measure by contributing journalist, Tom English.

Aberdeen have nailed their proverbial flag to the mast this week with the word, “No previous meeting found” on their fixture list comment on a forthcoming game against Newco. It’s a simple comment, it’s accurate, has been confirmed in writing by Uefa and will position the club shoulder-to-shoulder with their fans.

Get it right, Celtic.

  1. I wonder if Tallybhoy might know of a bar in Lucca where I might watch the game on Saturday. Thanks in advance…

    VFR,

Any monetary sanction of the club in liquidation will just go into the pot….making the SFA just another creditor…..but am sure the new club, as part of the 5 Way agreement, agreed to accept this sanction…..overdue and not chased by the compliant SFA

I thought part of the 5 way agreement was that newco took on the football debts of oldco including the £250K fine.

Yep. And the likes of Bolton,Sunderland,Spurs,Southampton. Perhaps and allegedly.

Probably Leeds too from the Risdale days.

Etc etc etc as Yul might have said. It’s rich pickings for HMRC,but it might well be that their tax demands-now with a basis in law-might finish a few off.

I know exactly what you mean, I remember the TA not having much time for the Maestro, always thought the “booing” came from the end that was covered, I know a couple of mad Scotland fans (one who is Celtic daft) and the non-Celtic guys are gutted that Broony has retired, maybe the times are a changing……

Tonight I will be cheering on Scotland for Gordon (& Jobo)

  7. Tipperary two points ahead of Kilkenny at half time in the All Ireland hurling final. Most neutrals will probably be up for Tipp on the basis that Kilkenny have won so many titles already. However, they have set a very high standard so if they lose you would like to think the victors have surpassed Kilkenny’s supremely high standards. So far, Tipp are worth their lead and if they continue to play in the second half like they did in the first I hope they win.

Hurling is the Irish equivalent of Shinty but shinty is reputed to be closer to the original game played by Cú Chulainn.

Hurling is an amateur sport and the attendance at Croke Park today is over 82,000. The winning team will receive the Liam McCarthy Cup and each player will receive a medal.

The game resumes on RTÉ1/SkySports3 in a couple of minutes.

  8. Thom, At least your positive about the game.

I’m enjoying it as well Tipp were clearly better team in first half but are still only 2 pts ahead.

First 10 minutes of second half could be vital. Kilkenny traditionally make a surge after half time, if Tipp start well 2nd half, I think they will kick on & win.

  17. Can’t believe the utter nonsense being spouted on here on the subject of Scottish History.

Apparently anti-Irish bigotry has been airbrushed from 20th century Scotland by Scottish historians – The Green Man and friends.

I must have imagined all that heart-rending history I read, courtesy of Professor Tom Devine, not to mention the many speeches I have heard him deliver on the subject of the Great Hunger and Irish immigration to Scotland.

Excellent article. They are trying the same in a similar lower-league compy in England.

The first round of it,with big-name academies, was last week.

    Most got gubbed.

We did well to negotiate a few rounds,IMO. And like you say,the players will have learned from it.

A steep learning curve, aye. But beneficial in the long run,I reckon.

Just got round to reading your excellent article on the cheating of the Murray years in the CQN magazine.

180 million in losses, how did they manage to dump all the debt owed to 276 creditors, including HMRC?

Why, by stopping being Rangers, of course.

But now the debt’s gone, they object to anyone not calling them as they were always called pre-death, even by adding a 3 letter word.

Charles Green didn’t add the definite article because he just loves the word ‘the’.

It differentiates, though nowhere near enough.

They don’t like it being used, so there’s a hint, Celtic.

    First visit of The Rangers.

    No previous league meetings.

Now who could argue with such a simple truth?

  21. Here’s hoping Big Sam’s England fail to win in Slovakia, leaving the door open for Scotland to top the group with a victory in Malta.

I don’t think CQN is drowning in its own mediocrity, bud. The fact that someone spouts an opinion has not changed in 13 years-or ever. You believe it,or you point out its factual wrongs.

    Your question makes no sense.

I mentioned Devine as one example that disproves your assertion that anti-Irish bigotry has been airbrushed from Scottish History.

I made no claim that there are no dissenting voices in the historical canon.

Or are you on a mission to tot up the for and against historians and come up with a winner?

    Tom Devine…..is that it?

Yeah, you sound like an Authority on History.

I spend my life in historical analysis.

And if you look more closely, you will find that Prof Devine likes to remind his readers, that it wasnt until recently…that for example, the extent of slave ownership in Scotland or the extent of Sinn Fein activity in Glasgow in the first years—(1907-1922) of the 20th century, was understood…..that information, was buried.

    Keep reading Tom.

In a recent survey of CQNErs more than 70% wanted Scotland to win against Ireland ( Euro qualifier at Paradise)

I must admit I was surprised …(pleasantly), fairly sure that the majority would be backing Ireland against any other nation ( including Italy and Poland)

What is Sam Allardyce for, he won a title with Limerick a generation ago. Since then won a few promotions and introduced some innovations ( or so they tell us..)

I was not aware of how stringent the restrictions were for the Carnegie Trust.

However, I just spoke to the person I knew who had got one (though it was for a Ph. D) and he told me that he had had to make a case for an exception to the rules as he had to argue that going to a London University was the only place that could give him the supervision in his specific area. He did and he was successful even though all other successful applicants from his course were going to Scottish destinations.

You could always e-mail them to see how stringent they will be in enforcing this rule, if you can argue that the destination is the only or, by far, the best destination she can go to.

    Good luck anyway.
