McLeish frank admission, Aberdeen get it right. Will we?

1909

BBC’s series, Scotland’s Game, has become compulsive viewing. Tales of redemption for Celtic, Hearts and others, and tales of woe for some. Last night’s episode had a few remarkably frank admissions.

One which caught the eye was former-Rangers former-manager, Alex McLeish, who admitted his title winning team “would’ve been behind [Celtic]” had they not funded their squad through EBTs. We should all take note for when the Big Tax Case reaches the Supreme Court.

Pleased to see the appropriate amount of damage done to Rangers by majority owner and chairman, David Murray, was correctly attributed, with one or two character defects throw in for good measure by contributing journalist, Tom English.

Aberdeen have nailed their proverbial flag to the mast this week with the word, “No previous meeting found” on their fixture list comment on a forthcoming game against Newco. It’s a simple comment, it’s accurate, has been confirmed in writing by Uefa and will position the club shoulder-to-shoulder with their fans.

Get it right, Celtic.

Simply delighted to see a guid Tim batter the bookie, mate.

    Gaun yersel’!

  2. Thom,

Tipp have a seriously good team, in recent years Kilkenny became a bit of a bogey side but they have slipped a bit, they were extremely lucky to beat Waterford in the semi.

This Tipp team is very young and they also won the minor Championship today. I can see a period of Tipp domination over the next 3 or 4 years.

Sadly my County is going through it’s worst period since the GAA was formed, so regardless of who the form team are, we are relegated to be also rans and can’t see any progress in that front for the foreseeable future.

I do not know about a Dalriada Bar but there was/is a Dalriada St at the back of the Lisbon Lions Stand.

As for the Tartan Army booing Celtic players I have to say that it is not something I heard in the years I actively followed Scotland (from the mid80s to the early part of this century ) although I know Wee Jimmy and David Hay in a match v Denmark in 1970 were jeered by those in the Rangers’ End and that when my dad took me to the occasional Scotland game in the late 60s and early 70s Rangers players were given bigger cheers than anybody else.

Nowadays your bitter Hun hates the Tartan Army almost as much as they hate us and actively wants Scotland to lose – Celtic fans who did not follow the national team were/are mostly indifferent in my experience rather than hostile though there were some like a late uncle of mine who did want Scotland to lose.

Me? I used to go a lot but aside from the World Cup of 1990 I never got anything like the buzz I got from following Celtic and the football was often worse. The TA were never quite my thing and I stopped going in 2001. If its on and they win I will be happy enough but I won’t be going out my way to watch ir tonight

    Historians can tell you anything.

They can be David Starkey, David Irvine, E.P. Thompson. Thomas Carlyle, Karl Marx, they can be me.

    Everything can be argued.

They can say the Holocaust was purely down to Hitler…..while forgetting to mention Social Darwinism, and the 2nd German Reich, and the Herero people in 1904.

They can also tell you that there was no bribery involved in the Act of Union of 1707.

They can tell you that the indigenous people of Mexico thought the conquering Conquistadors were Gods…..But…it isnt true.

    Its a myth.

    Like many other myths.

    Anyway….what do i know:)

    Have to disagree there.

After studying history my whole adult life, id be a very poor historian if i didnt know the nuts and bolts of the trade.

Historians discover things in their research, they also..er..lose things as well.

If you dont know your history….historians can tell you anything, and you would not know the difference.

Thats why its important not to believe people just because they are respected and have social status.

If you dont question….how do you answer?

How many hours a day is your mobile phone both mobile and active?

It’s on 24/7 as I rely on it for business; I use it heavily for calls, e-mail and messaging as well as music. Never have to charge it till I get home at night and it’s usually only for an hour or 2 (I invariably use an iPad charger because it charges it quicker).

If it’s an iPhone, not many would be my guess.

    Wrong: see above

It’s a mini-computer with a limited battery life, and the ability to make and receive phone calls. It is far from a mobile phone by any description due to being plugged into the wall after about eight hours.

I can get up to 14 – 15 hours with fairly heavy use every day.

Huge con trick. And the reason I kept my oul’ Nokia. If my monthly tariff hadn’t been reduced to £12 it would have been binned.

    I would disagree.

As for Ladas, never had one. But I bet they started nearly every day and rarely broke down. Witness the number of taxi drivers who had one in the 80s. They might have been shite but that is what you paid for.

Had one as a courtesy car for 2 weeks once. Broke down 4 times; the last time Arnold Clark had to recover it from the side of the road because I abandoned it and got a taxi home! Pile of shite IMHO.

  11. All of Scotland’s media people know that Rangers ‘died’ from liquidation and that the club playing at Ibrox is a new club with only four years history. But they are in denial and control all mainstream coverage. SFA is just as bad. How the hell can we bring this to wider appreciation?

Historical knowledge is based on what you can prove with evidence.

Can we prove….do we have evidence to support a certain argument.

I gave you an example….Ive been researching something for a while, my argument is controversial and i think correct, however, i cannot secure the evidence to support my argument….This is common.

You see, quite naturally, people burn, hide, obscure, and lie…to hide that very same evidence im after.

    Its a minefield.

But…i will get them in the end.

    Sorry I missed you earlier. Here’s another book recommendation for your Autumn booklist;

The Greatest Traitor by Roger Hermiston. It’s a biography of George Blake but reads like a ripping adventure. What an amazing life Blake led. A stunning, gripping read.

I read a couple of Scotland Facebook pages reporting on Broony’s retirement and some comments were of the ‘good riddance’ variety but none mentioned his club team ( as a sizeable minority of our support don’t rate him either so they might have been Tims!).

Am a Broony fan (sorry Kev J) and when Scott retired from international football I was well surprised as he had a great relationship with Gordon Strachan, maybe Broony thought he had to make sure he was in Brendan’s plans first…. I think Scott will be thought more of when he is not there (a bit like my other favourite the Maestro) by the way not similar players but our “current” captain is a better player than some realise

  27. TIMBHOY3,

Surely you mean the Sugarolly Mountains?

The Dalriada was a (pretend) motel on Edinburgh Road, back in the day when pubs couldn’t open on Sundays. You could get a drink in a motel if you were a bona fide traveller. That was very loosely interpreted to cover Easterhouse, Barlanark, Cranhill and the surrounding schemes. Did a roaring trade for years.

If memory serves (which it might well not) Dalriada street was one of the streets off Springfield Road, like Malcolm Street and Janefield Street.
