Michael Nicholson confirmed as CEO, C-suite expands

The best known secret in football was confirmed today as Michael Nicholson became Celtic chief executive officer, a position he carried out as acting CEO since Dominic McKay left the club in September.

Solicitor, Michael jointed the club from Glasgow firm Harper Macleod in 2013, where he acted on behalf of Celtic.  He has been a longstanding season ticket holder and lifelong supporter of the club.  More recently, he joined the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), where he acts as an arbitrator.

I know Michael.  He is an intelligent and passionate Celtic supporter.  He is ambitious for Celtic and will bring a singlemindedness to the job.  We wish him every success in what is an almost impossible job.

The move also sees the role of Chris McKay change.  Chris was previously Finance Director but is now Chief Financial Officer, “with a broader range of responsibilities”.  This is probably more significant than it sounds.  Peter Lawwell’s experience and influence is impossible to recruit and difficult to hand down, even to the sharpest minds.

In making Chris a “Chief”, Celtic have expanded their C-suite.  I expect we will see responsibilities distributed more widely going forward than they were in the past.  Some of us think they could do with a Chief Operating Officer too.

  1. I can’t believe anyone is swallowing the story about DMcK being responsible for signing JMcC. The signing came days after (correct me anyone) Ange complained about the lack of speed in getting bodies in and DD announcing he would take matters into his own hands. The result was , and was always going to be, a couple of Irishmen in – James and Liam in this instance. Remember this was at a time when we needed instant rebuilding not long-term prospects! Neither James or Liam have made any impact so far having played very few hours and we’re now at the January transfer window. Amazing is it not? The players aren’t to blame. For Liam it was a dream and for James this was obviously going to be his last move. So knowing DD’s desperation to show he (DD) was an action man James ensured he got a 4 year deal which takes him to the end of his career thank you very much. His injury profile wasn’t going to take him past 4 years and after bringing his family up to Scotland and finally coming home there is no way he would go anywhere else after Celtic. So 4 years or nothing.. DMcK story is easy to read. He was lied to. He was told he would be in charge and then when his plans contradicted those with the real influence he was pushed. I’m sure he got a decent payout for his silence as they all do in the business world. MN is now CEO and I wish him well but surely he is DD’s puppet. He was always there so why was he not seen as suitable instead of appointing DMcK.? Whatever way you look at it the story tells that we are an incredibly poorly run club and I can’t honestly see MN making a difference. DD and the Board are not really going to make any major changes while Celtic remain in the SPFL. Ange will leave eventually after some success to the EPL and we will back to square one. as usual.
