Midfield fight, CSA article and Football Memories

1215

I had a look at the story on the official site this morning about a compilation CD with various versions of the Celtic Song being released.  After the initial pleasure of seeing Emilio Izaguirre and Scott Brown on their feet unaided, what struck me most was the apparent body mass of the two players we would normally consider our midfield enforcers, Scott and Beram Kayal.

Against Paddy McCourt, Joe Ledley and Emilio, not to mention men of considerable bulk, like Charlie Mulgrew, they are comparatively svelte and diminutive.  The central midfield role is about mobility and football-intelligence more than anything else.  How you use your weight against an opponent is as important as having the weight to begin with, but when the margins between winning and not winning are so tight, getting the physical balance right is important.

I don’t think I’ve been happy with a Celtic 4-4-2 line-up for years but playing Scott, Beram and a couple of wingers across midfield feels like an invitation for more limited opponents to bully this area, something the Highlanders did very effectively the last time we visited Inverness.

After mentioning tomorrow’s Fans Against Criminalisation meeting in yesterday’s blog I read Joe O’Rourke’s item on the Supporters’ Association site on the same subject with a mixture of horror and foreboding.  The First Minister would be well advised to quickly reign-in whatever loose cannons he has roaming the corridors of power.  Well done to Joe for bringing this to the attention of a wider audience.

The guys from the Alzheimer’s charity, FootballMemories, org.uk asked me to bring their site to your attention.  They work with Alzheimer patients, using the universal platform football provides us all, to engage and invoke recollections.  The site has lots of great Celtic stories, take a look and add your own.

Being scottish and having lived in Ireland, I can honestly say the the term Freestate in my mind is a non derogatory term used for the Republic, I don’t know any loyalists so I couldn’t speak for them, but I have know a few Republicans in my time and they all use the term freestate, I could be very wrong, but I always understood the term to meaning free from brit rule.

    Sorry for butting in.

please do not take it as personal slight against your good self who has obviously educated yourself in the history of your Island and it’s struggles. I will admit to using the phrase as a sly dig at the uneducated but my intention is not to label an entire “country”.

Haven’t read back, so may be already said, but if Christine Grahame had a large say in the criminalise fans bill then it’s got to be binned. What is more worrying is that Alex Salmond will have known fine well that she was alledgedly :) a bigot, but did nothing to ensure she was kept well away from it. He then went and sold it to the Catholic church. Now THAT really worries me.

You’re certainly not, l know loads who use that term on a regular basis. More common than people think, in fact i’d use it before the term ‘Republic’

I agree, Bryan Ferry was a genius. He is also as big a f*d as he is a genius! Still love the guys music though :)

Heard him being interviewed on radio several years ago and he stated that his favourite ever Roxy Music song was Bogus Man, which was a big surprise and is one of my favourites too.

I hate to jump in on a good discussion but during my youth demonstrating against the occupation of the 6 counties I always considered the south as being the Free State. It was definitely derogatory and aimed at the comfortable ignorance and ambivalence of the south towards our own people under attack.

At times I will call the 6 counties the north of Ireland and the FS as the south….never Northern Ireland and RoI.

Each to their own. I don´t like the term because it was used AGAINST me by MY own countrymen.

1000 km from home, working in Germany 94/95 and looking for tribe it was used to start fights. By drunk Ulstermen. They tried to spit at us. Nut us. Kick us. Swipe at us. All the time useing this term in a derogatory manner.

    Not exactly fond memories.

UlsterCelt is normaly a good poster and I enjoy reading his posts but the buck stops for me when he starts the “Freestate” stuff.

Had this exact exchange 6 weeks ago with him.

    I think it´s a real shame.

I´m proud of my land, all of it.

That has been my concern. I asked Big Nan about this as he/she seems clued up on matters of the SP, and he reckoned it was just naivety on Alex Salmond’s part, but i don’t think so. There’s too much politics involved – the choice of people to contribute to the “review”, the contribution of Strathclyde’s finest and other things. The mistake he made imo was overestimating the intelligence of Grahame. When dealing with Tom Devine she was supposed to twist and spin his contribution but being the muppet that she is she let her/ the SNP/ Strathclyde’s Finest’s intentions slip imo.

The whole thing stinks and the “loss” of the crime stats confirm in my mind that there has been a seriously devious agenda behind this from day one, and that it is not a political misjudgement as some of us might think (or hope).

  16. Kitalba,

don’t know what to say… condolences and deepest sympathy… one of the hardest things

  17. Fortunes 10.15- No that wasn’t me- we arrived in Krakow on the Sunday of the LCF (we were also in New York in Sept and arrived just in time to see the 4-2 defeat at Ibrox). I pity the poor guy that used my tickets in those 2 games!

Re Auchwitz, the suitcase pile was indeed difficult to take in, all those innocent people had taken so much time to beautifully handwrite their names and details on their cases to ensure they were kept safe- such deceit is hard to imagine.

Equally the mountains of shoes, brushes, childrens toys, prams, spectacles, prosthetics.

The sheer size of Auchwitz II (Birkenau) was what got to me, 1km x 2km in area, we walked along the railway track where the people were forced off the trains and seperated and followed the steps of their final walk to what is now the remains of the crematoria.

Birkenau was an extermination camp of an unimaginable size and scale.

Schindler’s factory in Krakow (south of the river) was was also very worthwhile poignant, after much searching we also managed to locate the only existing piece of Krakow ghetto wall.

BJ Mac- I was at the Rosenborg v Celtic game too, but in with the home fans, quite mild a balmy -6C under cover, the uncovered area where the Celtic fans was totally exposed- all you dafties in there with short sleeves on too- the Norwegians were amazed!!

    A terrible game.

Trying to pick a Favourite Roxy track is difficult as there are so many of them.

Here is one of the beat singles of all time and the first song that I was aware of that didn’t mention the title to the final words-can you guess what it is yet?

  21. I am trying to understand the situation regarding Christine Graham, I have read through the posts and I gather that she has made some anti-Catholic remark but no one has provided a link. I’m assuming that this must be a recent development? Why are we gunning for her so strongly? What has she done?
