Midfield fight, CSA article and Football Memories

1215

I had a look at the story on the official site this morning about a compilation CD with various versions of the Celtic Song being released.  After the initial pleasure of seeing Emilio Izaguirre and Scott Brown on their feet unaided, what struck me most was the apparent body mass of the two players we would normally consider our midfield enforcers, Scott and Beram Kayal.

Against Paddy McCourt, Joe Ledley and Emilio, not to mention men of considerable bulk, like Charlie Mulgrew, they are comparatively svelte and diminutive.  The central midfield role is about mobility and football-intelligence more than anything else.  How you use your weight against an opponent is as important as having the weight to begin with, but when the margins between winning and not winning are so tight, getting the physical balance right is important.

I don’t think I’ve been happy with a Celtic 4-4-2 line-up for years but playing Scott, Beram and a couple of wingers across midfield feels like an invitation for more limited opponents to bully this area, something the Highlanders did very effectively the last time we visited Inverness.

After mentioning tomorrow’s Fans Against Criminalisation meeting in yesterday’s blog I read Joe O’Rourke’s item on the Supporters’ Association site on the same subject with a mixture of horror and foreboding.  The First Minister would be well advised to quickly reign-in whatever loose cannons he has roaming the corridors of power.  Well done to Joe for bringing this to the attention of a wider audience.

The guys from the Alzheimer’s charity, FootballMemories, org.uk asked me to bring their site to your attention.  They work with Alzheimer patients, using the universal platform football provides us all, to engage and invoke recollections.  The site has lots of great Celtic stories, take a look and add your own.

You’ve obviously met the man :)) Don’t know bugger all about him, but was very impressed by his cover albums. He does look a bit like Chris De Burgh, which is unfortunate for him :) No offence to any Chris De Burgh fans…..

Well said. I know from experience that sometimes these things do happend because of naivety, or taking yous eye off the ball. But these guys are generally very calculating. We obviously don’t know for certain, but you’d stick good money on this being a total stitch up.

honestly, I would never have an issue with an Irishman with your obvious understanding of our countries history therefore please do not take it as a personal slight against your good self if I use a term that was used for 60 odd years by my relatives.

A brilliant post and is my way of thinking but could never articulate it anywhere near with the class you have done.

Excellent news that Ireland are almost certainly going to Euro 2012, especially as they were let down by so many when they were blatantly cheated out of a deserved spot in the last finals. I never seen the game but reading that Aiden has setup a couple tonight. I think a lot of Celtic fans (if they really were – granted) have done this young man a great dis-service by saying he wasn’t all that clever football wise, I would have to say he is a lot smarter than most footballers and does indeed possess excellent in-game awareness, it was always just the problem he couldn’t influence the tempo of a game from the positions he was deployed in.

I was looking at the Europa Cup and if we win against Atletico, tough but definitely achievable, and Udinese don’t win in France, then we will be in a very good position to qualify from the group.

It would be better if Rennes win their home game as this will still give them the impetus to try and get the result in the last game, which could be every bit as crucial, as a draw for them will mean our possible progression even if we don’t get the required draw @ Udinese.

We need as many at Celtic Park for the Atletico game even though it is an early kick off. I hope Celtic do everything in their powers to get as many in as possible, even if it mean’t giving tickets away (yes totally unlikely) to fill the ground, or opening gates at half time or whatever.

I do not buy this crap the media have inserted into our minds that Europa League is a distraction, FFS why do we persist with Scottish football is my query. These are young men being asked to adapt to new pressures and learn things on the go, yes they may have started off slow (coming back from in all but name CL group games), expect them to speed up now. The last week showed everything to me that Neil can criticise his Young players in Public and they STILL RESPOND to him. This to me is a really good Unique sign and we are indeed on the cusp of something really special imho, Because Neil has put total trust in his players and that is Unique, especially in this day and age.

    And a transcript from the article in the Herald today;

Grahame urged to stand down during ‘sectarian’ investigation

    LUCY ADAMS CHIEF REPORTER

    11 Nov 2011

POLITICIANS have called for the head of Holyrood’s Justice Committee to stand down until allegations that she made sectarian comments have been fully investigated.

It emerged yesterday Christine Grahame, SNP MSP and convenor of the committee, has been accused by a former employee of making sectarian remarks about colleagues, including members of her own party.

The Justice Committee is currently overseeing the anti-sectarian legislation, the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communication Bill, that is going through Parliament.

The allegations have been published online by Mark Hirst, her former senior political adviser, who was sacked in September for gross misconduct and is taking Ms Grahame to an employment tribunal claiming unfair dismissal. The complaint has been sent to the presiding officer.

Ms Grahame yesterday described the claims as “ridiculous”.

Labour MSP Michael McMahon said: “Christine Grahame has a responsibility to ensure the Scottish Government is doing all it can to protect people from sectarianism and racism and any questions raised about her position on this matter must be cleared up as soon as possible.

“I would urge Ms Grahame to consider her position on the Justice Committee until such times as any investigation into this matter has been completed. Questions already exist about her neutrality while considering the so-called Bigot Bill, as she appears to believe more Catholics need to be arrested to even things up.”

The Herald revealed in September the Electoral Commission was investigating allegations made by Mr Hirst about Ms Grahame. This is ongoing.

Lothian and Borders Police probed allegations made by Mr Hirst in September but said they would take no further action.

A spokeswoman for Ms Grahame said: “Mr Hirst’s comments have absolutely no credibility and Ms Grahame will not respond to such ridiculous claims.

“Mr Hirst himself admits he is a disgruntled former employee who has been dismissed for gross misconduct and his previous allegations against Ms Grahame have been rejected by the police and dismissed by the Standards Commissioner.

“His comments have absolutely no credibility.”

Forgive me jumping in here as well. First off i’ll confess to my lack of awareness on the feelings on this subject and probably the depth of understanding that yourselves have…but my experience is that most (not all, of course) of the Irish outside of the 6 counties don’t seem that concerned about the North. As part of the Irish Diaspora in Glasgow, i’ve come to think we are really quite alone here as well, especially during the rise in a anti-Irish racism and anti-Catholicism seen here in recent years (divide and conquer politics to stave off independence imo). It must have felt the same to our cousins in the 6 Counties who experienced first hand how bitter the hun hatred of us is.

Two brilliant tunes-remember buying the Album Copperhead Road back in ’88 on the

No. 73 in the Billboard Hot 100 back in 1971!

Well said. Again, i share all those sentiments – the same feelings and the same memories of it. Interesting you point out the whole deceipt behind it, which isn’t so widely known or recognised…yet is surprising and makes the whole thing even more horrific. More so when you learn that the deceipt was continued right up to the very last moments…going into the gas chamber after being told to strip, believing it was a mass shower room….. horrendous. No words to describe it. Families bring seperated at the judgement of one man to go unwittingly to their deaths or last a few weeks in hard labour before dying of exhaustion. Another thing that folk need to bear in mind, is that is was very recently, and that similar people to the Nazis have done recently, and will try to do the same again…the threat is there as much as it’s always been.

I’m glad we had the sense to arrange the Saltmine visit for the day after. That was uplifting and reminded us of the good in people.
