Midfield fight, CSA article and Football Memories

I had a look at the story on the official site this morning about a compilation CD with various versions of the Celtic Song being released.  After the initial pleasure of seeing Emilio Izaguirre and Scott Brown on their feet unaided, what struck me most was the apparent body mass of the two players we would normally consider our midfield enforcers, Scott and Beram Kayal.

Against Paddy McCourt, Joe Ledley and Emilio, not to mention men of considerable bulk, like Charlie Mulgrew, they are comparatively svelte and diminutive.  The central midfield role is about mobility and football-intelligence more than anything else.  How you use your weight against an opponent is as important as having the weight to begin with, but when the margins between winning and not winning are so tight, getting the physical balance right is important.

I don’t think I’ve been happy with a Celtic 4-4-2 line-up for years but playing Scott, Beram and a couple of wingers across midfield feels like an invitation for more limited opponents to bully this area, something the Highlanders did very effectively the last time we visited Inverness.

After mentioning tomorrow’s Fans Against Criminalisation meeting in yesterday’s blog I read Joe O’Rourke’s item on the Supporters’ Association site on the same subject with a mixture of horror and foreboding.  The First Minister would be well advised to quickly reign-in whatever loose cannons he has roaming the corridors of power.  Well done to Joe for bringing this to the attention of a wider audience.

The guys from the Alzheimer’s charity, FootballMemories, org.uk asked me to bring their site to your attention.  They work with Alzheimer patients, using the universal platform football provides us all, to engage and invoke recollections.  The site has lots of great Celtic stories, take a look and add your own.

Correct. If Celtic fans were singing sectarian songs they would have been committing an offence under CURRENT legislation and should have been arrested. By reporting this to UEFA, the police have done the equivalent of standing by as a man steals from a shop then write a strongly worded letter to his Mammy.

I would actually glad if this were to be true. The issue needs brought to a head. There are 2 possible outcomes

    1) We are found not guilty as a club and it puts to bed the notion that we are “as bad as each other”

    2) We are found guilty and then supporters stop their outdated RA chants.

I don’t think the majority of the support would allow it to continue if it is deemed to be a problem with UEFA and I don’t see as being “repeat offenders” like the Huns.

For what it’s worth I am of the same view as most here. I don’t think the songs as sectarian but I cringe with embarrassment at the thought of 14 year old drunk neds singing IRA songs on Manchester’s busiest shopping street if we play there. They should stop even though they are not sectarian.

  3. I know exactly, the song that the pig has reported us for.

    Re this UEFA “investigation”.

Just struck me that it could , as aforementioned , be the Paddy McCourt song that’s been brought to UEFA attention.

Basic hun mentality is that “The Billy Boys” is banned by UEFA because it contains the word “fenian”, so it’s the word that is illegal and sectarian , and not the context.

Frightening that a top policeman could perhaps be applying this playground logic , but if true would any of us bet against UEFA upholding the complaint ?

  5. Did the S/clyde cop contact UEfA delegate whilst at the game? If yes, it can only be the match

commander, I think. No other cop would feel free to do it.

Did the S/clyde cop make the approach in a personal capacity?

Just shows what we are up against in this shithole of a country, where were all the top cops reporting them for there hundreds of years of bigotry, where was the top cop at last seasons League cup final when 30000 of them were giving it laldy?

Something absolutely stinks here, a very very very dangerous development.

And you can bet your bottom dollar that this is probably the start of an orchestrated campaign by Strathclyde Police.

A bit like saying the huns should be done for singing ‘No surrender to the IRA’, because it mentions the IRA.

  9. The last time we got reported it was a reporter from one of the rags. (Someone may have his name.)

Police and media have ignored the conduct of the Ragers since time began.

Yes, I’ve heard Huns try to apply that logic too with regards PMFA chants.

A bit like accusing Tommie Smith as being a racist for using the “Black Power” salute because that is the same as calling someone a “black b=-#’@”, isn’t it?

That’s exactly the same twisted logic…..but it only applies in one direction.

  12. Can someone explain to me why the IRA or songs about the IRA are viewed as sectarian?

The IRA is not a sectarian organisation.

The IRA killed Catholics as well as Protestants.

So were does the sectarian bit come in?

Whether you think songs about the IRA should be sung at Celtic Park or not (personally I don’t think they should be) these songs are most definately not sectarian.

    Except in Scothunland.

I think the question should be asked of the police officer who reported this.

Which organisations outwith the police force are you a member of?

  13. The singing of songs, the endless debate.

Anti Irish Catholic bigotry is an issue in Scotland. A big issue. It’s not an issue in England (and don’t suggest that militant secularism is the same thing, it’s not).

Scotland being part of the UK constrains the extent to which bigotry and sectarianism can become part of public life.

There’s an Irish republican argument that loyalists would be better off in a united Ireland because they would form a larger part of the political whole, and would have a voice, whereas in the UK context they are irrelevant and aren’t even a smear of orange on the Union Jack.

Transpose that argument to Scotland. Not a pretty picture.

  17. Plod are, by their very nature, authoritarian.

    The SNP government are authoritarian.

    A marriage made in hell.

Plod have been emboldened by the noises belching from Holyrood.

This is only the start of it.

  18. Let’s see what the alleged sectarian chant being reported was. It will be difficult for UEFA to do anything unless they are going to take on things like the Barcelona fans who unfurl their “Catalan is not Spain” banner every Real Madrid game.

But let’s be clear here, Rangers fans’ whataboutery is well established, UEFA have confirmed several times that they are inundated by fans AND the Scottish Press for a comment on what they intend to do about Celtic every time RANGERS are pulled up on a disciplinary!

The weight they carry has never been enough for UEFA to act, it is clearly bitterness and it is seen to be that.

However someone/some people at Strathclyde Police have decided that in order for it to have the gravitas to force UEFA to open investigations then they themselves need to initiate the complaint. This cannot be anything but a measured decision.

But there are tangents to a straightforward inquiry here. UEFA are likely to take a police authority’s report as final and it could be damning before we have a chance to defend it. If we do defend it do we immediately place ourselves at odds with our own police authority? In which case health and safety issues at certain parts of the ground will soon be rigidly enforced, we can be sure of that, among other potentially nasty surprises.

When was this complaint made? Was it before or after The Celtic Trust exposed the Match Commander as anti Celtic. He is refusing to resign. Is this a last hurrah?

However, the Police could come unstuck here. UEFA may well wish to avoid conflict with Irish historians and civil rights lawyers so this depends on what the allegation is. Receiving a complaint from a police authority is surely a strange one as although UEFA has authority over the match, so too does the police authority who have decided NOT to act but instead pass the buck. This could get embarrassing if they have to admit they did not act as there was nothing criminal, but they want UEFA to act. Surely a prejudice there as UEFA have acted numerous times against Rangers, and found them guilty several times, but received no complaint from the local police authority.

We need to find out what the complaint is and the Club will need to communicate that as how can they ask for a change without specifying the problem. But the Club also need to be prepared to come out fighting and not roll over to a UEFA decision based solely on a police report, we need to state a case. We also need to be prepared to take on the Match Commander. There might need to be some blood letting so that this is not the thin end of the wedge, Celtic may need a scalp at the Police. But are we prepared for the fight? I have my doubts.
