Midfield fight, CSA article and Football Memories

I had a look at the story on the official site this morning about a compilation CD with various versions of the Celtic Song being released.  After the initial pleasure of seeing Emilio Izaguirre and Scott Brown on their feet unaided, what struck me most was the apparent body mass of the two players we would normally consider our midfield enforcers, Scott and Beram Kayal.

Against Paddy McCourt, Joe Ledley and Emilio, not to mention men of considerable bulk, like Charlie Mulgrew, they are comparatively svelte and diminutive.  The central midfield role is about mobility and football-intelligence more than anything else.  How you use your weight against an opponent is as important as having the weight to begin with, but when the margins between winning and not winning are so tight, getting the physical balance right is important.

I don’t think I’ve been happy with a Celtic 4-4-2 line-up for years but playing Scott, Beram and a couple of wingers across midfield feels like an invitation for more limited opponents to bully this area, something the Highlanders did very effectively the last time we visited Inverness.

After mentioning tomorrow’s Fans Against Criminalisation meeting in yesterday’s blog I read Joe O’Rourke’s item on the Supporters’ Association site on the same subject with a mixture of horror and foreboding.  The First Minister would be well advised to quickly reign-in whatever loose cannons he has roaming the corridors of power.  Well done to Joe for bringing this to the attention of a wider audience.

The guys from the Alzheimer’s charity, FootballMemories, org.uk asked me to bring their site to your attention.  They work with Alzheimer patients, using the universal platform football provides us all, to engage and invoke recollections.  The site has lots of great Celtic stories, take a look and add your own.

Watched the ragers d utd highlights there and a couple of things struck me.

    1.how lucky they were

2.If big dan had been defending some of they crosses he would have been utterly slaughtered in the press .Check out the gojan back header towards his own goal ,the commentator tells us what a great save mgregor made .

If dan was to do that I suspect the headline would have been Forster save Majstorovics blushes

    hail hail

  4. bournesouprecipe – I don’t know, Zenden might have been useful to us on a short term basis, he does have over 50 caps for Holland.

Sounds like fitness may have been a worry though. Also, he’s 35 and seems to be somewhat injury prone. (thumbsup)

LiviBhoy – No, The Bartman was the best rap song ever. (thumbsup)

I want to ask the blog a wee question-

I have a pal,a good pal who is having a birthday party for one of his relations in a local masonic hall,I’ve been told by one of the other mates its because ‘its cheap’.

Do you think there’s something that I should note about this good palomine?

Yep, her and Shaz seemed to have had a supporting role only. I was drafted in at the last min as the good lady was busy – as I said, the weans seemed to love it, but that’s an hour I’m never getting back… :-)

I only took the phrase palomine from our masonic authority,Kojo has always been ok with me this isn’t a dig at him.

Be interested in your opinion though.

  8. Well, time to depart once again for another Friday – smoked fish for tea, then a few games of football on the telly for my enjoyment/despair. Over and out Bhoys

After watching the ragers highlights I think they could be rattled if pressured ,unfortunately we have failed miserably so far on this .Our injuries have been shocking ,my worry though is that we are entering the winter period where we IMO tend to drop most of our points .not least due to the state of the pitches .

If ever we needed to buck a trend it is now .

  12. fergus slayed the blues 17.31- I also don’t think the Rangers back line is pressured enough in the SPL, Goian and Bocanegra look good because the opponents don’t get in their face, they are somewhat fearful of their reputation.

Look at the goal Daly scored last week- basic stuff, our CB’s would (rightly) get absolutely roasted by the fans/press if we lost a goal like that.

Hoops Stokesy and Sammy will be a bit more of a handful for them!

  13. goldstar10

Winning is a habit. Their fans are content – no need to criticise when everything’s coming up hunnish.

Celtic simply have to knock the stuffing out of them on December 28th.

Also was it not the ragers solid back line that lost 3 to Falkirk in the cup ,yet we are told they’re CBs have gelled together quickly .

Our defence got stick last term also whilst having the best defencive record in the spl

    Good Evening,

Blantyre Kev was talking of Murdo McLeod. A few of us out in my neck of the woods have a variety of contacts with Murdo.

He spoke fairly recently at the local football club dinner not long after he had returned from his major heart scare. he did not look well at all I have to say.

Anyway he was in the middle of story about the European Cup when he paused and said ” For all you Rangers Boys– you won’t have ever seen the European Cup. It’s the big one with the big wide handles– just so that you know because the story only makes sense if you can picture what I am talking about. The Celtic guys don’t need a description. They’ve seen it!”

On another front what does anyone know about this guy Nick Train buying 6% of the shares? And who was selling them?

I believe that Friend Train is a real city merchant– a buy and sell man whose only interest is profit and the bottom line.He also seems to be targeting the USA for an interested buyer.

    Mmmmmmm Wary!!!

  17. up_over_goal/fergus slayed the blues- Dead right, if we are not choking at the leish to get at them on 28th then there is something far wrong.

Must say, I really like this 4-2-3-1 shape with Hoops coming off the bench to put extra pressure on tiring defences.

Well my usual reliable source is now my unreliable source we are not it seems going to sign Zenden and I for one am happy about that Id much rather sign promising young players that top up former stars pension pots.H.H.

  19. Looking in on Scotland v Cyprus match. Worse than the SPL. A Cypriot clattered a Scot a la Motherwell. The commentator waffled about refs not wanting to issue cards on friendlies but had to on this occasion. The ref was quite right (incidentally, he was one of those who “broke” the MIBs strike last year).

  21. 1-0 Scotland

Miller mishits a shot and it goes over the keeper.

Yes I am having a laugh.

  22. Been away this week, had time to read Pauls leaders but not much more. Just spent the last three hours skimming over the comments and looks like I didn’t miss much (Ha, ha)

When the balloon goes up down govan way, if they don’t succeed with slap-on-the-wrist plan A, (assuming the plan is to keep a football team), the next viable option would surely be to drag the whole scottish game down into the cesspit with them (anesthetise the opposition whilst they get themselves sorted)

Don’t be surprised if they try and move this into the space where EUFA sanctions against the whole scottish game are a possibility (even if it means them grassin on themselves in the process)

Anyhow, Friday night, cold beer in the fridge – and Vmhan – that wee addition to your moniker is first class.
