Midtjylland, Danes again for Celtic

302

Celtic face Danish runners-up Midtjylland in the Champions League qualification round 2, with the first leg played at Celtic Park five weeks from now.  While there is an enormous amount of work for Ange Postecoglou and Dom McKay to turn the current squad into a force to be reckoned with between now and then, this is a decent draw.

Midtjylland disintegrated in May.  They won one, drew one and lost two of their final four games to blow the league title by a point.  Manager, Bo Henriksen, has been in the Midtjylland job just a week longer than Ange has been Celtic boss, so like us, they are very much a team in transition.

Unlike Sweden, Denmark do not play through the summer.  Danish football has a short, seven-week, break from May to July.  The new season starts the weekend before Midtjylland travel to Glasgow.  On paper, this puts them ahead of us but I doubt that seven-week window allows them to return to training much ahead of Celtic’s return next week.

Having done what looked like the hard work against then Danish champions, Copenhagen, in a Europa League away leg in February last year, Celtic capitulated at home, further exposing some of the wounds that would cost us dearly last season.  Copenhagen exited the tournament at the quarterfinal stage, where they lost a one-off tie to Manchester United by a single goal.  This was an opportunity a better Celtic team would have made more of.

Lots to do but this is one we should rise to the occasion for.

Final word on you surprising post. Have a look at any number of the one you are defending’s unsolicited posts to me over say, the last year, and also a few from others this morning – you will soon appreciate the difference between satire & abuse…..I hope.

  3. For the benefit of those who still visit the high st bookies to place their football bets in person…(I expect online punters to automatically benefit)

William Hill have voided all LOSING bets on the Denmark-Finland match. So any bet placed (eg First scorer, correct score, etc) have stakes refunded on them.

Similarly, if you bet a double on Belgium & Denmark to win their matches that day, you will be paid out on a single on Belgium (as Denmark will be treated as a non runner).

Also maybe worth noting…Hills are paying out on the Finnish lad as 1st scorer v Russia yesterday…even though VAR disallowed the goal.

It’s a “Fair Play” gesture their giving.

I doubt many will have backed the Finnish lad…but maybe worth noting in case any bigger named players score 1st goal in future Euro games, only to see VAR disallow the goal.

You may still get paid out.

  4. “I have to smile when I hear some say, “I want independence but I don’t support the SNP”. It is a distinction without a difference and quite frankly absurd”.

    – This would imply that if someone does NOT want independence then there is no difference between the Conservative, Labour or LibDems (or Gorgeous George, for that matter). Maybe you are right, I don’t know., but I don’t think so.

Your numbers are made up of course – you say that. These numbers indicate those “cult members” seem to have completely different views (which is not very cultish) “between hated English… coherent economic case… Blood and soil Nationalism” (these would be the Blood and Soil people who don’t hate the English?? Interesting, please explain).

“SNPcult..SNPcult.” I can see that convincing people who disagree with you is not one of your priorities. That’s fair, although I think that by doing this you risk losing the argument, and I don’t think that the argument should be lost by name-calling (on either side).

Of course there are problems with financing independence (although I don’t think they are insuperable). I just don’t think that this is the most productive way to put your case.

Incidentally, my own view is that it doesn’t need to be a Manichean choice between Money and “Blood and soil”. I think the choice is largely driven by people seeing that much of England is simply much more right-wing (with its own nationalism) than much of Scotland; it has been so for a long time, and will be for a long time. The economic case for independence was at its strongest in the oil years, but economics never trumped the politics. Then again, I suppose I’m a cult member.

    Have a nice day.

I received one in the post today as well. I haven’t renewed yet, it refers to a thanks for support last season.

Looks like a maximum of four can used for an individual purchase. The PIN is for online purchases, the barcode on the reverse side for Celtic store purchases. Not for use in JD Stores, though club says adidas gear can be bought with it.

I don’t know if the new season adidas products will be in store before the expiry date, 30th September. Also indicates a remaining balance available will be recorded so it doesn’t have to be an all-in spree.

    Be seen in green.

I have no fear in losing an argument, I have lost some in the past and even changed my mind after a full, frank point for point discussions on many subjects.

As for England being more ‘right-wing’ than Scotland…..well ‘the proof of the pudding is in the eating’. We get increasing £BILLIONS each year for nothing in bale-outs under Barnett – that sounds pretty left-wing to me……In Scotland there is a National (Guard) Police Force under government control – that’s a pretty good indicator right-wing intentions to me – nothing like it in England & Wales.

Of course people join cults from all different backgrounds and hold differing points of view, but when ‘engaged’ they ‘shut their traps’ as instructed. In the case of the SNP, ‘shutting your trap’ is integral to being a member or officer, of the Party – it is a written part of the ‘signing-up process, as is drinking the ‘Kool Aid’ of independence at ANY cost and under ANY circumstances.

  7. I was hopeful after the election, yon fella would stop berating and badgering the good folks of the olde Celtic Quick News, we have enough going on in our own sphere, but no, on and on and on and on.

I do not take your targeted comments as abuse – just ill-informed.

See while we’re on “Barnett Baleouts”.

How can something from the UK Exchequer which I pay into as a UK taxpayer be a bale out?

  11. Earlier this year I read a report by a leading group of oil analysts. They projected that by the year 2050 a barrel of oil will sell for $10. At present, a barrel of Brent crude costs $40 to produce. Scotland will not see much of a benefit from the oil and gas sector once it becomes independent.

As it stands, when the oil and gas revenue dries up we will be living in the equivalent of a Baltic state. Long before 2050 the Baltic state economies will be way ahead of ours. Here comes austerity.

I suspect that the people who support independence don’t care.

They are voting to make future generations poorer.

  12. SQUIRE DANAHER on 17TH JUNE 2021 1:58 PM

    ——–

The UK Exchequer is the ‘kitty’ which of course we all pay into. The SNPcult used to ‘shout the odds’ about having full fiscal autonomy – they don’t anymore… I wonder why?

Scotland as one of the devolved nations of the UK, sets its own budget & annually spends more than it can bring in. That leaves an annual deficit, i.e. an overdraft, which the UK, more specifically England, even more specifically London and the South East, pays off every year.

If you run an overdraft that someone pays off annually as a matter of course, it may be said that you are continually being ‘baled-out’.

  13. Regards the future of Oil.I was a bit confused last week, when Joe Biden ordered a pause,on granting of drilling licences in the Article. All the big hitters are involved.Seemingly untold billions of barrels there. Now can anyone explain why the multi nationals are so keen to discover,at huge expense, something its claimed we won’t be using in the near future.

    Anyone?

  14. Just a one off Post from me on Scottish Independence & the ongoing debate here.

I can truthfully say that no amount of money in the World would tempt me to vote for Ireland to be part of the UK,

If I was Scottish it would just be natural for me to want my Country to be Independent.

I would want to live in Harmony with the other Nationalities that share the Island, i.e. The English & the Welsh and if that entailed a close Economic Co-Operation between then I could live with that.

However ultimately I would want a Scottish Government making the decisions that affect my day to day life.

Also the Foreign Policy Decisions that would define how the rest of the World view my Country and its people.

In Ireland once we got Independence it took years for real Politics to be established and I have no doubt the same would apply to Scotland.

The SNP hold sway at the moment as people of varying Political leanings who want Independence have no other realistic alternative.

If Independence happens, the SNP are likely to be the dominant force for some years but normal politics will soon emerge, new Political Parties will emerge & in a few years the single Party concept that dominates UK & American Politics will disappear and you are likely to see the emergence of Coalition Governments which in my mind are safer & more Democratic.

Having had my wee rant, I will retire to the shadows.

I am a Political animal myself so I can understand to a degree why people make Political Posts here,

However at this stage the lines are clearly drawn, we know where Ernie & JHB etc stand & where An Tearmann et al stand.

No amount of repetitive Posts are going to make a single Poster change their Political Views.

Yet the pantomime goes on day after day, week after week.

Entitled people who just hijack the site & don’t care a .jot, about their fellow Celtic Supporters who came here to form a Celtic Community & to talk about all things Celtic.

Dozens of good Posters have left over the years because of the selfish few.

I wouldn’t classify myself as a good Poster. but I am more or less driven off as well by the ceaseless repetitive political posts.

I am fully aware that this post will not change anything, if I lurk tomorrow the usual suspects will be saying the same things they said last year, last month, last week, yesterday and will continue to say them tomorrow, next week, next month & next year.

    Enough is enough.

  19. Scotland has the most powerful devolved administration in the world and is more than capable of fashioning Scottish solutions to Scottish needs with the strength & insurance of the UK, the sixth biggest economy in the world behind it.

The fact is that the SNPcult is so consumed with the constitution that it ignores the real needs of the Scottish people – a people if anyone needs reminding, voted by a clear majority to reject separation from the UK as recently as 2014. The SNPcult is NOT Scotland.

So lets remember when some of us tend to take the moralistic route – democracy was strengthened, not weakened, when the majority said NO. Scottish self -determination was put into practice. We, the majority, who have no truck with independence, accept the SNPcult in power at Holyrood, even although the split UK parties always win the popular vote – that is also democracy at work.

As far as the entitlement of some and the discussion of political issues in CQN, may I remind that it was the Nationalist view that almost swamped a previous Celtic football blog in the run up to the 2014 Referendum – this is conveniently & wilfully forgotten.

Political issues and decisions have played a significant part in Celtic’s business on and off the park during the last year – in an independent Scotland the political tension thay we have experienced will be more pronounced and hostile.

Most people on here will know that I have been lobbying for an inquiry into the malicious prosecution of several people involved in the Administration of Rangers.

I am pleased to see that, after the resumption of the Parliament following the recent elections, the process appears to be progressing and that a judge from outside Scotland should be appointed to lead it, a move which I think is critical to have any chance of an independent outcome.

    ————————————————————-

Rangers malicious prosecution inquiry could be led by judge from outside Scotland.

Nicola Sturgeon confirmed that the remit of the inquiry into why the club’s two administrators were wrongly prosecuted could be led by a judge that would give everyone ‘confidence’ in the process.

A judge from outside Scotland could lead the inquiry into the malicious prosecutions concerning Rangers FC, Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed.

The First Minister said, “there is argument for that” when she was challenged by Conservative MSP Russell Findlay on whether a judge from outside the country would lead the investigation into why two men were wrongfully prosecuted during a fraud probe relating to the sale of Rangers.

David Whitehouse and Paul Clark were appointed administrators when the company that ran Rangers went into administration in 2012.

They were arrested in 2014 but all charges were later dropped.

The Crown has since said their prosecution was “malicious” and both men were awarded £10.5 million each in damages and promised an independent investigation into what went wrong.

With other cases pending the total cost to the taxpayer could reach £100 million.

She added: “We’re committed to this of course the crone office in prosecution matters acts entirely independently of ministers.”

“It is important that there is a remit for this inquiry and that is led by a judge that commands confidence. That’s in the interest of everyone and we will take these decisions at once the proceedings have concluded.”

Tory MSP Findlay, who asked for an update on the plans for an inquiry said: “We don’t yet know how much these malicious prosecutions will end up costing taxpayers, the self inflicted damage to the Crown officers reputation is unquantifiable. “

  25. It’s gonna be hard for any judge to come to a true verdict when James Wolffe has already issued an apology, under instruction from, or with the agreement of Nicola Sturgeon, and describing the prosecutions as “malicious”.

They have done this against the wishes and views of the previous Lord Advocate and before the various court cases have run their course.

There is no doubt that somebody mucked up the prosecutions but there is a lot of doubt as to whether this was a deliberate mess up, in answering a cry for assistance, or genuine police and prosecution service incompetence.

Thankfully some of the current judges and prosecutors, involved in current cases, are still asking hard questions about the behaviour of Administrators and about the Continuity Myth, Despite the abject surrender by Nicola Sturgeon and James Wolffe to the Villains of 2012.
