Midtjylland, Danes again for Celtic

302

Celtic face Danish runners-up Midtjylland in the Champions League qualification round 2, with the first leg played at Celtic Park five weeks from now.  While there is an enormous amount of work for Ange Postecoglou and Dom McKay to turn the current squad into a force to be reckoned with between now and then, this is a decent draw.

Midtjylland disintegrated in May.  They won one, drew one and lost two of their final four games to blow the league title by a point.  Manager, Bo Henriksen, has been in the Midtjylland job just a week longer than Ange has been Celtic boss, so like us, they are very much a team in transition.

Unlike Sweden, Denmark do not play through the summer.  Danish football has a short, seven-week, break from May to July.  The new season starts the weekend before Midtjylland travel to Glasgow.  On paper, this puts them ahead of us but I doubt that seven-week window allows them to return to training much ahead of Celtic’s return next week.

Having done what looked like the hard work against then Danish champions, Copenhagen, in a Europa League away leg in February last year, Celtic capitulated at home, further exposing some of the wounds that would cost us dearly last season.  Copenhagen exited the tournament at the quarterfinal stage, where they lost a one-off tie to Manchester United by a single goal.  This was an opportunity a better Celtic team would have made more of.

Lots to do but this is one we should rise to the occasion for.

  1. Rolling Stone – it’s a fair point, some of them are youths, but I’d expect the Colts side will need to be registered separately from the first team so they are the ones I think will stay in the first team pool.

I agree that really we need 10 players: new GK, whole new back 4, a Centre mid, left winger, 2 strikers and a back up right back. I think we’ll need to shift folk first though as there’s a lot of padding in the squad and after pushing the wage bill up last year we’ll be looking to have it more manageable this year.

Celtic supporters, faithful through and through…

    …win, lose or draw…

    And others…

Maybe you just don’t get it.

    ——-

Of course I get it – I’m a season ticket holder of almost 40 years.

I am faithful through & through – but I am not blind through & through! Does kidding oneself on make you more of a Tim?

No one would be more overjoyed than me if we qualified for the CL under our current circumstances – but I’ve got to call it as I see it based on all current evidence.

  4. Absolutely woeful from Switzerland tonight. They look a decent team, talent wise, should have beaten Wales and started OK tonight. Ended up playing like they were winning 2 or 3-0 instead of getting beaten. Liked what I saw initially from the big Swiss boy up front, Embolo I think, but he disappeared like his team mates. Looks like one good result from Wales tonight will see them through.

Has Ange entered the (UK) building yet?

  5. There is a lady on here who seems convinced that I am George Galloway – let me assure her that I am not.

I do share George’s love of Celtic & his detestation of all that the SNPcult stands for, however there are other issues & causes he espouses that are diametrically opposed to my thinking.

    Sorry to disappoint!!!!

LAXALT on 16TH JUNE 2021 10:09 PM – decent post ta.

IMO – as he is being brought in for his coaching expertise rather than wheeler-dealer skills – Ange will only be able to bring in 4-5 players max. This limitation will also resonate with the board’s desire to run a tight ship in difficult economic times (contrast that with the profligacy of the ugly sister!) Plus, some of our product (Boli and Oli) may struggle to find buyers.

Whether it’s Dermot, Peter or Dom done the deals, Ange’s interim brief might be to develop our ‘yoof’ quotient to fit his system rather than draft a wheen of experienced senior pros. As Sevco proved, you dont need superstars to build efficiency; just reliable, non-prima donnas to implement a couple of tight game plans.

Sure, the board will bring in 2 ‘names’ with some status (a Mooy and Ryan I bloody hope) to convince supporters we’re really IN the transfer market, but prudence will still be the over-riding watchword. Some of Ange’s new recruits may be J or A-League up and comers; maybe even the big lad Souttar who scored for the Socceroos midweek?

I dont see an 8/9 player influx, but I’m still optimistic as we enter the era of Ange !

  11. Being frae Moscow and the olde Cold War and all that and it being 80% (guessing here) more transmissable, we will open up next Summer perhaps.

Didn’t Roberto play for Motherwell back in the day?

Some of our best players came through that route.

Joe McBride, Dixie Deans, Brian McClair, and Phil Donnelly of course, probably others that dont come immediately to mind.

Roberto has got to be the smartest of them all. His approach not too different from Brendan, and of course there is a bit of a connection at Swansea. Not sure if Belgium will be able to win the Euros, especially after watching Italy again, but Lord knows they will be as well prepared as any team in the Tourney.

And wee Shaun part of it all.

A wee while back there were some on here who claimed to have got 100% in their SCE Ordinary in Arithmetic.

Turns out that their teachers gave them access to the exam papers before the test itself, that never happened in my day before the standards started slipping.

In fact had I been examined in the same format I wouldn’t have been looking at 100%

I’d have been looking at 110%

I was doing HNC Electronics and was struggling because I left school early. Mixed in with HND students who had went through it the year before I think. The Teacher took Time out to help 3 of us understand things a bit better, he didn’t have to. I was a bit messed up at that time and can’t recall his name.

Point being, that SNC, HNC and HND quals were part of the FE college system, work or industry related, and recognised as such. An HND not far short of a degree eg and a route to such. Not to say that you could not do Highers at a Technical College if you hadn’t done so at school earlier. A path to University if that is what you wanted to do. A terrific system which combined both SED and Btech quals. Then they put the educationalists in charge….
