Talking about mothers earlier;my mum once asked me,”What have Celtic ever done for you?” This twelve year old boy just sat there with an incredulous look on my face lost for words.Nine years passed today.God bless you, mum. HH.

Cardinal O’Brien who I knew, baptised my son. Still makes my skin crawl. I know he was human, but he turned me against the Church he represented. I hope he made his peace with his victims. Hope his maker can forgive him. I cannot. Wonder how his victims feel today? Hope he is a dying breed of despicable Church leaders and priests. I struggle to forgive him. May his soul rest in peace.

  3. Landed. Thanks for all your responses.

DD – I actually thought SA became LESS of a player when he joined us and RD played him as a left winger and I’m very glad to see him back.

SoT – I agree that Motherwell played to their best yesterday. As did for eg the much-improved Killie. And I think the general level of opposition has improved year on year in recent years.

SFTB – I have no problems with development from within rather than chequebook management. I’ve not been one to call for mass signings. And that’s despite the many injuries. Aitchison for eg I’d like to have seen more of, and I’ve been a big proponent of Ajer.

I would however cite the gospel of auldheid. Not ref finance or governance, but rather, fitba. Play the ball into space. Have good movement off the ball to allow us to do so. I want all of players to do so, or to try to. And I’ll only ever applaud them for doing so.

BRTH – not for the first time, you worry me!!!!!

This year paradoxically proves it’s possible to live in the best of times without playing the best football. I can differentiate betweeen the two.

My son was proud to be baptised by the leader of his Church in Scotland. He has never set foot in a Catholic Church since the O’Brien scandal broke. That beast turned my son against the Church I had brought him up in sadly.

    Thanks for support pal

  10. Perhaps I could offer Jerry Rice of NFL fame as a metaphor for what I want us to achieve domestically. And it’s much about tactics and delivering on the field.

The best wide receiver, playing in the best team, receiving the ball from the best quarterback.

What did he do every off season? Worked on his weaknesses or areas that weren’t yet great. So Every season when opponents returned better equipped to handle his threat as per last season, THIS season’s new improved version appeared and disappeared once again into the end zone.

Cheers for the reccos – I’ll check out David Foster Wallace.

Been to other bits of the Caribbean but not to Jamaica. Tempted but it always seems just on the edge of….I’m not sure what.

Had an interesting encounter in Barbados in a shack/bar where a guy with machete slashes suggested I buy a bottle of rum as he had a bottle of Coke. How could I refuse…?!! He proceeded to show me his bullet wounds – he had a boat and sometimes the police got a bit close. Told me he’d spent 7 years in the UK. I asked him where. Answer – “Strangeways. I liked it”… :-)

    Church etc

Kinda off topic and possibly something which will spark the ire of others but here goes:

It must be obvious to all and sundry that the whole seminary and institutionalised method of training young men who have a vocation is flawed and very badly flawed at that.

Forget that the purpose of the institution/building/school/college or whatever is meant to further training in a religion, the fact is that similar type situations have historically led to incidents of not only sexual contact, whether that be hetrosexual or homosexual, and of course sexual abuse where those in power or in command or in a position of influence have used their position to abuse others.

Such behaviour can never be condoned, should always be condemned and most importantly should always be recognised, acknowledged and where possible the victims should always be helped and comforted.

In many cases, the perpetrators, if they are willing and recognise their wrongdoings and abuse of position, should also receive counselling and whatever assistance is needed, neither of which in any way lesssens their wrongdoing.

    But:

There have been occasions when the Catholic Church has annoyed me greatly or, to be more accurate, people within the Catholic Church annoy me greatly. Some have been clergy men, and some of those have been high ranking clergymen at that. What they say, or on some occasions what they don’t say, seem completely at odds with what I believe the guy with the big dress and the sandals would do or say.

Others have been highly thought of laity with public personas which many look up to, but who for one reason or another I have viewed with deep suspicion or mistrust and with whom I would want absolutely no contact whatsoever. Hypocrites and liars.

I have known people who have been sexually abused, both men and women, by both clergy and members of the laity (of course I know of people who have been sexually abused by people who are not Catholics at all so it is not just a Catholic thing) and sadly I know of thise who have taken their own lives as a result.

However, the failings of men haven’t interefered with or lessened my belief in my religion which I can’t say I practice “perfectly” in the eyes of some but which I practice “personally”.

Any preacher of any faith is no more than a man or a woman who will be imperfect and have their failings great or small. Any organised church is only made up of such imperfect human beings and yes the Catholic Church stands hugely guilty in my eyes of failing the victims of its own clergy and its own institutions.

However, I find that there is so much good in the teachings and the philosophy of the church (the same can be found in other religions too of course) that I personally look beyond any individual such as Keith O’Brien.

I chat to the big fella upstairs and many a time I find he listens.

Of course, there are those who will think that all of the above is a pile of crap and they just don’t believe at all in a God of any kind and I can genuinely follow that logic and point of view.

I personally just choose to walk another path.

God rest Keith O’Brien, but hopefully he will give some peace to anyone who suffered abuse, indignity or worse as a result of his behaviour.

Have to agree with you. The Scottish Catholic Church, by and large, has been free of the absolute scandals that have rocked the Irish and American church to it’s foundations. Yet, as an altar boy I knew that certain Priests and laity had desires towards females – which I knew even then was out of kilter with the teachings.

As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to accept that humans are as humans do, and that these Priest were human and had the same frailties, desires and weaknesses as any human. I care not if they were straight or gay, they were human.

However, it has been the abuse of power that has sickened many and as we have seen in Hollywood and Westminster, this cannot go unchecked at any point and those who have committed the abuse should be punished in whatever way the Law deems fit.

A rogue Cardinal is not going to sway me from my faith in God and the good work of the Catholic Church in Scotland.

Don’t know if you knew/were able to make it but “Scratch” played Edinburgh a couple of weeks back. I didn’t go along – saw him last year here and earlier in London. Mentalness epitomised! He was great!
