Neil Lennon as a mirror on Scotland

1091

When I checked my phone this morning it was full of emails and texts about Kevin McKenna’s seminal article in the Observer on the treatment, or lack of it, Neil Lennon experienced during his years in Scotland. It placed a mirror in front of the former Celtic manager, for Scotland to look at its reflection.

The prime targets were not missed: the Scottish Government, the SFA and the conspicuously idle anti-racism bodies, while the “reserved professions”, the Tories and the C of S were marked for historically nurturing anti-Catholic and Irish sentiment in Scotland.

People outside Scotland will read in horror, perhaps tinged with a whiff of moral superiority that their own communities are not similarly afflicted.  This, ironically, would reflect the moral superiority many in Scotland viewed the English with last week, as a sizeable minority of their apparently poorly-educated, old and white voters backed candidates who align with racist, misogynistic and homophobe views.

In CQN comments section Scotland has often been parodied as the worst small country in the world, which is absurd.  In truth, its panorama of human values vary little from those shared by our neighbours or anywhere across the globe.  To think otherwise invests more weight in racial traits than I’m comfortable with.

Order your dedicated copy of Tommy Gemmell’s All the Best at the fancy new CQN Bookstore.

    My advice would be for your daughter in law rather than your son to negotiate with the agent.

    Turkeybhoy sounds an interesting one, he was a player I wanted many years ago and maybe the odd good player does make a good manager. He has euro experience and a new attacking style may get more fans to turn up.

    entirely my thoughts and given that they opposed Devolution at the beginning it will be interesting to see what stance they adopt, post referendum, when additional powers will be granted to Edinburgh.

    I think it’s unfair to suggest that Malky is a failure.

    He was a journeyman player but played in 3 teams that won promotion to the EPL. He was a winner.

    He got Cardiff promoted to the EPL, took them to the League Cup final where they held Liverpool to 2-2 after 90 minutes.

    His squad at Cardiff was not of EPL quality, but he had them above the relegation zone. After he left they finished bottom.

    He’s the kind of young manager I would like to see at Celtic. I was not be opposed to a European manager, but of the British candidates he’s the one I like best.

    Seriously? A 10% turnout from 32% says we are somehow on a par with the 30% of English voters who voted for UKIP?

    3% in reality.

    Maybe you’re right, maybe you’re wrong but when 4 Million people in the UK vote for this lot it is time to have a rethink.

    The UKIP win has been facilitated by a poor turn out, poor campaigning from the SNP and others, poor tactical voting and a constant barrage for Farage from the BBC and other media outlets who have pushed this party onto not only Scottish screens but English.

    It seems to me quite a few Labourites are high fiving each other and are glad UKIP got a seat because they can make a tenuous link across the islands in their favour. When a supposedly left wing party’s supporters (not all I grant you) find some perverse pleasure in seeing UKIP succeed, I would say game’s a bogey and we are through the looking glass.

    It is rather chilling and equally it is worrying that some are now calling on Miliband to offer an IN/OUT referendum like Call me Dave (check today’s independent). These calls will eventually, I believe, force the Labour Party into offering a referendum and then where does that leave us with a state broadcaster ramping up the UKIP bandwagon? It won’t just be Farage on TV every week, we’ll get the new kids on the block including this buffoon we have representing us and embarrassing us into the bargain. In hard times this kind of politics finds its home rather easily and then having achieved their aim the Right wing can get rid of workers rights, Human rights and regulation checks on the bankers – it is what they want and why they want out of the EU. Our Parliament will be of no protection to us because UKIP want it abolished so they can continue to call us Subsidy junkies as it was they who coined that particular phrase.

    This is where the stakes are ladies and gentlemen. They are that high.

    Already we have some Tories wanting an alliance with UKIP – if that happens and we vote to stay in the Union the God help us.

    The major parties in the UK as a whole are now all chasing the nutters.

    This is horrific in my opinion.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~**~~~~~~~~~~~
    Frankly I’m horrified that the lurch to the right by the major parties has been insufficient to satisfy a large part of the electorate where I live;that they have seen fit to vote for UKIP means that something is fundamentally wrong in UK politics.
    Left-leaning voters are disenfranchised. Yet those same people see their prospects diminished by unregulated immigration.
    What they don’t see is UKIP intention to dismantle the NHS and The Welfare State. It concerns me greatly that so many people blindly buy into this.
    My sole comfort is the small turnout,that the 30% of 30% is the best they can do.
    Btw,I believe the turnout in Slovakia was less than half of that. Around a whopping 13%.
    Might be an idea to get your compatriots out to vote,instead of throwing yer oar into a place where frankly your opinion is irrelevant.
    Like mine!
    Lol thanks for backing up my point 13:02. What a charming fellow.
    Anyway, your using one poll, from marginal constituencies to enforce your point?
    Consider every Opposition leader has previously topped the Europeans, even when they have failed to go on to win the succeeding general election. Howard managed it in 2004, Hague in 1999, but it didn’t stop him being annihilated at the next general election. Even Kinnock did it in 1989. Blair and Cameron, of course, did it and went on to form the next British government. It’s a sine qua non for the Opposition, though as Howard, Hague and Kinnock remind us, it’s not sufficient in itself.
    Miliband came 2nd making Labour the 1st opposition party since 1984 not to win a European election. Next year he’ll be trying to become the first Opposition leader to make it to Prime Minister without having previously delivered a victory for his party in a European election.
    On the one hand we have historical based research, which shows Labour are NOT going to win the General Election, and on the other we have the opinion of a Unionist, based on a scare story in a right wing newspaper, that it’s going to be a Labour government in line with his political hopes.
    Which version to believe?
    Tough choice.
    They’ll be an impotent laughing stock.
    I suppose they could try blaming the BBC.
  18. Ryecatcher 12.06 re Nigel Farage
    Fully agree with that, he’s definitely working to an agenda, and he’s helping to give the illusion of choice – people had cottoned onto the face that the 3 main parties are so similar that in the uk there is no democracy because there was no choice – well there is now neoliberalism or fascism.
The coach was about to start theteam’s trainging but he took time to speak to me.He told me to give my contact details details to the the young chap and said I would be contacted when the public sale starts with my tickets reserved.
    Iain King of red top infamy’s e mail address is in their website, I think he is manager of the Lowland League team.
    I e mailed him to compliment the good attitude of the staff I dealt with. He was kind enough to reply and was pleased with attitude I was shown. Iain explained that EKFC wants to be a big part of the community with people’s first impressions being important and was delighted I was treated well.
    There is no need for me to edit them or any room for misunderstandings in either of them.
