Neil Lennon speaks out for the heart of Celtic

1024

I spoke to Phil Mac Giolla Bhain, a man who wears his Republican heritage on his sleeve, about the hostile reaction to his comments on modernising the Celtic songbook a few months back.  Phil found himself to be an easy target for conspiracy theorists who turned on him for issuing a request to an end of political chanting.  I’m sure Neil Lennon will not find anything like the same reaction to his comments in the Sun today, but it remains to be seen if anyone listens.

Neil said, “It’s important that we put a general message out that these chants have no place around our club. To be honest, we are better than that as a club and we always have been, we just don’t need it.

“We are and always have been a club open to all and we do not have issues around sectarianism. We have our own values and traditions but they do not include these chants. We don’t want them at matches and they must stop.”

This is not the first time Neil has given the same message this year.  After his earlier comments I actually heard, “Who is Neil Lennon to tell me what I can and can’t sing?  I’ve been going to Celtic Park a lot longer than he has.”

We are in a classic social paradox.  The reputational damage of political singing is not felt by those who sing, and the risk of personal consequences arising for any individual singer is probably around 1%.  And let’s be honest here, for all the supportive flags, banners and “I’m Neil Lennon” proclamations, is Neil respected enough to be listened to, or has he become a modern Che Guevara-poster boy?

Whatever you think of Neil, or his rights to say what you can or cannot sing, he has the best interests of our club in mind whenever he speaks on this subject.

    oglach1888,

your UFB stuff is commendable if you are striving for liberty, but the sentiment of that verse brings sanctimonious justification for discrimination. You challenge the unthinking brute to match thoughtless brutality, without consideration, the colateral damage you invite is nasty.

I see you did not take up my offer to condemn rangers for their part in undermining the british troop engaged overseas ??

join me, are they guilty ??

I have no evidence that it was the intention of RFC to disadvantage the British Army while avoiding paying HMRC. However regardless of implied implications i doubt if Der Hun intended to disadvantage any HM troops in any way, the lack of decent equipment to the Brits can’t really laid at the door of the dark side. 40+ mil really doesn’t buy a lot of armour 1 fighter bomber a 3 tanks, etc

As for sanctimonious justification regarding discrimination – challenge the brute to match thoughtless consideration? Emm let me think i grew up in the Ardoyne / Bone North Belfast thats how we roll – invite nasty -we always have collateral C’est la guerre.

Hoestly you want Celtic suppoters to be H*ns Really. Why would i condem Der Hun as being reponsible for the ininadequacies of t HM government to provide their troops with decent kit i can level the same argument at the government for paying billions of tax money to the banks.

There is no racial difference between the Irish and the Scots.

To believe there is is to deny the existence of DNA

To me Celtic supporters should defend the huns freedom to sing BJK and the famine song.

To believe otherwise is to encourage fascism.

  7. You know what I find offensive.

It’s the banners and scarves among the Celtic support which depict a couple of angry, snarling Irishmen with thick, bushy eyebrows and bared, growling teeth, posing with clenched fists above muscular, tattooed forearms, alongside the legend “FIGHTING MAD IRISH”.

    God tellt me

The book of parthenogenesis or as god said “Big Black Nemesis”

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the

flattest earth ye huv ivver seen and god said

    “Whit?”

    “Jings”

“Whaur is the four heeded beast?”

ZAP he said from his big outstretched haun

and the 4 heeded tyrannosaurus rex appeared but he had only wan heed

and wiz a man lizard mibbe fae Aiberdeen ken.

    So God said

“FFS! Zappa Frankarooni” wan mair time

and oot popped 3 mair heeds.

Wan of them was deflated and called itself the Euro.

The other 2 were called the Cretacious-Tertiary boundary baws and Jimmy.

But God had messed up coz the T.Rex got helluva pissed

and due to the dangly bit of the euro he twirled and twirled

roon and roon till he grabbed it. Ate it. As it is written.

Howevvah the Euro didnt care, the KT boundary stared at st.Peter and said “whit noo?”

The T.Rex died with the Euro hingin oot and Jimmy said “here comes Moses.”

Then Nostrahunnus showed up blessed the carcas saying the famines over why dont

  9. Cant wait to get back to business tomorrow.

The manufactured headlines we’ve endured, over recent days, have certainly upped the stakes on

the depths our enemies will stoop. I’m sure there’s more to come.

Picture a cornered rat; you know what I mean.

    Anyways, 1-3 Celtic.

Ps Think someone already pointed out, but allow me to reiterate; get your money on A Rankers Penalty

tomorrow. Euan Norris has handed them FIVE in the last 3 games he’s reffed them.

    Easy money :-)

  10. Will be interesting to see what Neil lines up with.

We all know what happened last time we played up there, we lost the Physical battle, in a big way.

Bearing that in mind, I think Neil will go for a robust three, with JF providing the creativity.

Not exactly ground breaking news :-)

  11. I see Neil is doing the pre match conference today

Neils has agreed apparently to answer questions on the songs debate, brave or foolish?

Lawwell and our new Chairman will not be there

Im sure the media hacks are licking their lips in anticipation of some juicy headlines resulting from some controversial quotes via Neil Lennon

Stick to the fitba Neil and make it short

  12. lionroars67 says:

If that’s the case expect the first two questions at the conference to be about the

forthcoming game; before the agenda is pushed. Brave/Foolish? Cant say, sure

Neil will offer more weighted words then my own; but I cant help feeling It maters

not. The headlines are written, before a word is uttered; we all know that, right?

For me, I would just like clarification, as I would loath to end up with a criminal record,

for attending Paradise, and opening my mouth, in the same manner I have over the past

    Thirty years.

Hope the Bhoys enjoy the match up there tomorrow.

Remember what Neil said, “where better than that”

May I suggest that he records the whole PC from start to finish ,this was done by MON and GS and KD felt the need to take his to Bairds bar to let the fans hear for themselves that his previous answers were twisted ti suit the LL agenda .

  16. Morning Gents, happy Friday. Cannot wait for tomorrow lunchtime, seems like an age since we played last. I would have been going up had it not been for work, so it’s a 12noon finish, then straight home for breakfast and a Hoops victory (hopefully). As Pine Barrens mentioned earlier, we need to be prepared for the physical element – Butcher will have them up for it from the start. No conceding early goals as well, concentration is key. Do we know who’s fit/struggling? First name on my teamsheet would be Wanyama – seems to protect the back four well, like what I’ve seen so far from him.

  17. Grim and forbidding, but fairly mild morning here in North Ayrshire.

That Michael Kelly article in yesterday’s Scotsman was a welcome respite from the relentless anti-Celtic-supporter comments which seem to be coming from every angle just now.

  18. Morning all from gay Paree, bit of cloud at the moment – should clear up later (11C max).

I sincerely hope that won’t be the case. We need to talk about fitba and nuthin else!!!

No need to help them to fill their chipwrappers.

I have just noticed the main headline on the BBC Scotland sport section is still:

“Lennon plea to fans over chanting”

The main sports story of the day, week, month !?! Really !?!

Don’t they know that Romanov is pulling out, leaving Scotland’s 3rd biggest team on the rocks?

Don’t they have anything to report on Scotland’s 2nd biggest team?

How about a headline of “Ooh ah, pay yer TAX”?

Personally I would ban BBC Scotland (maybe not the BBC, but definitely BBC Scotland).

  21. CELTIC have been linked with a £2.6m move for former Rangers target, Roland Juhasz, during the January transfer window.

The Parkhead club are eager to sign a new centre-half following a catalogue of defensive errors this season.

Rangers made several attempts to sign the Anderlecht defender during the summer, only to repeatedly fail to meet the Belgian club’s £3.5m valuation.

Juhasz, who has been capped 69 times by Hungary, even made a personal plea to Hermann Van Holsbeeck, the Anderlecht general manager, to allow him to join the Ibrox side and had a £3m release clause written into his contract after the move failed to materialise.

Anderlecht want the defender to extend his stay beyond his current deal, but have admitted that they will allow the 28-year-old to move on in January should a club firm up their interest.

“Roland still hasn’t left us. But if he wants a change of scenery after seven years of loyalty towards us, we won’t stand in his way,” said Van Holsbeeck. “He was right to stay loyal with us despite several offers from Glasgow Rangers in the summer and we still want him here.”

Rangers are unlikely to return with another bid for Juhasz in January with the club still embroiled in a tax case with Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, which is due to run into next year.

The Ibrox club also have Carlos Bocanegra and Dorin Goian as their established partnership in central defence and so do not need to spend more money strengthening that area of the team.

Its the easiest thing in the world in terms of what we need to do

DONT mention the IRA in any chants ir songs.
