Never step into a great man’s shoes, Nadir

798

Remember Henri Camara?  Martin O’Neill paid a significant loan fee to sign him 10 years ago, in the considerable wake of Henrik Larsson.  Henri flopped and soon lost his place in the team but the weight of responsibility thrust upon his frame was considerable.  No one could come close to filling the gap left in the Celtic team.

Nadir Ciftci would do well to consider whose shoes he’s stepping into at Celtic.  Last summer’s striker signings, John Guidetti and Stefan Scepovic could hardly muster a start the second half of the season.  Leigh Griffiths, who arrived 18 months ago, got the striker’s gig most weeks, but Leigh came to Celtic with as illustrious a heritage as Nadir.

Never step into a great man’s shoes, but Nadir’s not doing that.  This is the perfect time for a striker to join Celtic, I hope he has the appetite.

I see the great and the good in the media are flogging lyrical at the prospect of a prodigy arriving from Madrid.  None of this has come from Celtic.  The player may become available at some point but I reckon it remains a hard task convincing Real his immediate future should lie in Glasgow.

blantyre, sounds like some match. but whatever slight chance Gasquet had against Djokovic, has now gone, as he will have little left in the tank.

So, I”m expecting Federer to avenge my young countryman, Pospisil, by giving Murray a sound thrashing (before Federer, in turn, falls to Djokovi in the final).

  9. Good evening friends and a Big Happy Holiday to, er, well, me actually.

No more ‘main’ work till 27 July, woo-hoo. And only 1 more part time shift tomorrow morning around 7.15-sh.

But first, a midweek curry washed down with a moderate amount of beer… ;-)

    BT,

    How ya doing?

I see that Murray is the bookie’s favourite against Federer, which surprises me a bit.

Career head to head is about even, but I would have thought, even in his decline, Federer would be the slight favourite on grass.

Either way, should make for a good final versus Djokovic.

Federer is one of those athletes that I like to tell myself would have been a big Celtic fan had he been born in Scotland … and not just because he is catholic… he just plays like he would be a Celtic fan … a bit of flair!

I think Derk would overcome his injuries if he was ‘pin-fired’ – it’s a treatment for horses with ‘bad legs’ – could be the very thing to ‘straighten’ him out.

  20. I always thought Ken Rosewall was the better flair player. Laver, Newcombe and those other Australians seemed to me to be professionals in the amateur era. Rosewall embodied the old Corinithian spirit.

BT … I’m jealous … as I have said before, Turkey is right up at the top of the list of countries I would love to see …. but just couldn’t convince KT at the moment. But am hoping that things will calm down there in the not too distant future, as I would love to see it. but glad you had such a nice time.

starry/justafan … haven’t met him, but I have to go with Starry on this one ….but, …

I still agree with Tallybhoy …. the Rockhampton Rocket is still the best ever (with Federer number 2).

    Thompson twin.

if we are using horse terminology maybe we should threaten to have Derk gelded, see if that has any effect on him

Although of course Ken turned professional very early in his career after 6 years on the top amateur circuit. Pretty much the same length of amateur career as Rod as it happens!

Ken was in fact one of the most high profile players to turn during the amateur era. In fact he did say he turned because he had been convinced by the professional body that the open era was just round the corner. Had he known how long it would take (he went professional in 1956) he would not have left the amateur ranks until he had won Wimbledon, which of course he never did.

  28. Not champions league, and although BBJ s goal at Annfield was indeed a screamer, and Henkes in Boavista ,with the clock ticking down ,so important ,I think the Seville dream started to become believable that night in Vigo, when BBJ shoved his marker out the road and drilled the ball into the bottom corner.

The second half onslaught was unbearable, actually left the stadium for a couple of swift voddys in the boozer right outside the stadium, went back in ,can still see big Rab and Bobo throwing themselves in front of everything. What a journey back that was.
