Issue 11 of CQN Magazine is our biggest and best yet; 100 pages of smooth as silk, green as grass, content for the Celtic community.  This month we mark the club’s 125th anniversary with a look back at one of our founding fathers.  We have a look at ex-Celts playing in North America, with some spectacular photos, and we have one article from a former club insider on how the media exploited his casual comment.

There’s also a look ahead at our Champions League chances………

It’s here, it’s FREE to read online, it’s stuffed full of what your community have to say.  Get it while it’s hot!

As well as reading for FREE here (don’t try to read through the graphic below), you can subscribe for £10 or £20, and our sponsor, Executive Shaving, who offer an enormous range of grooming products, are offering readers a £20 voucher for all £30 CQN Magazine subscribers

    Big Nan and others.

Keep an eye on how this SG initiative develops.

How well balanced is that panel and where will they gather their evidence?

I’m not suggesting anything untoward, indeed it could lead to effective change but the Celtic supporting community at large should be keeping a watching brief on this as much as the passage of the Offensive Behaviour bill.

    ====================================================

Well worth the watching. I do not doubt Dr Morrow’s sincerity and good intentions but in my experience, having read some of his stuff and heard his take on things as an occasional commentator on things here in the North of Ireland, I am afraid he is not one for seeing outside the ‘one sides as bad as the other’ prism. He would also not be a person for whom the idea of anti-Irish racism would sit easily.

But I suppose we should let him do his job first.

Mind you it’s a bit like asking a Jewish American to go and investigate the causes of the Palestinian problem – or vice versa – the findings will be skewed. There was a Marxist school of thought in the field of History that you should be open about your own opinions before and while attempting to write because people cannot completely free themselves from their ideology, culture, nationality etc when making judgements on situations. I tend to agree. There is very little truly neutral history or indeed social commentary or sociology – all realms which this will be touching upon.

I think such an undertaking should have been done by someone from a country where there is no sectarianism problem comparable to Scotland’s.

Getting a man broadly sympathetic to Ulster Unionism seems a strange place to start.

  4. The daughter of crime boss Mags Haney has failed to overturn a jail term for telling Donald Findlay QC he would be ‘away singing the Sash’ while giving evidence.

Catherine Haney was sentenced to one year in prison following comments made while she gave evidence at a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh.

The 41-year-old clashed with defence counsel Mr Findlay who opened with the question: “So Miss Haney, when did a member of the famous Haney clan decide to become a grass?”

She responded by saying: “I’m not wearing a f****** kilt. I’m wearing f****** trackie bottoms.”

She was giving evidence at the murder trial of Donna Murphy, who murdered Connor Mallon, 49, at a flat in Shettleston, Glasgow, in January 2010.

Haney had been called as a witness over conversations she had with Murphy while they were both imprisoned at Cornton Vale in Stirling.

In a decision made by Lord Carloway at the Court of Criminal Appeal in Edinburgh on Wednesday, he took note that Haney, from Alloa in Clackmannanshire, had insisted she should not be jailed for contempt because she was pregnant at the time.

However, attempts by the murder trial judge Lord Hardie to verify this failed and she was jailed.

During the original court appearance, Haney and Mr Findlay took part in a “heated exchange”, which included her saying to the QC: “You’d be away singing the Sash somewhere else.”

    ‘So, back to my question

Why did Big Mags get a year for contempt ?’

    It was her daughter.

Three reason by the looks of it

    1. Not turning up at court

    2. Her retort to Findlay

“Q So the picture the jury should have is, as luck would have it, you and these other ladies are looking down and here sitting on a blue chair, solitary splendour, nobody around her … have I got that right? That’s the picture you want to convey is it?

A That is the picture. But what, would you like me tae make it fancy for you. Bring things in that wurney there?

Q I’d like you to do what you said you would do and that is tell the truth.

A An that’s what I’m doin, telling the truth. I was actually part of this. I was there. I was actually part of this. I was actually there and seen what the situation, what the surroundings, everything was. You wurney.

    Q That’s why I’m asking ….

A You’d be away singing the Sash somewhere else”.

    3. Claiming to be pregnant for dubious reasons

If by ‘won’ you mean ‘lost’ and by ‘a trial’ you mean ‘all credibility’, then yes. Otherwise, unsure.
