Newco born from patronage of monetary inducements

740

Let’s be clear about what is going to happen on Friday.  Monetary inducements are being made to allow a newly created company to advance its football team two divisions up the league structure.

The overwhelming majority of money to pay for these financial inducements will be taken from Celtic, who vehemently oppose all these measures.  The SPL will reduce the commercial distribution to the top club in the league and pay-off everyone else.  41 teams will benefit financially from this proposition, only Celtic will lose.

For good measure, the SPL have declined to take gate sharing off the table.  Up to 30% of your season ticket money will soon be commandeered by Kilmarnock, Motherwell and the rest, who will take their slice and share some with the lower leagues.

All the while you can scarcely find a football fan of any club who is anything other than disgusted by this shoddy behaviour; Celtic fans are by no means isolated.  Most fans of former-club, Rangers, don’t want to see a phoenix assisted by such blatant patronage, lest Newco is forever known as a team which needed rules to be changed and money taken from Celtic to give it life.

Believe me, if Newco exists for 100 years, every day they score a goal someone will say, “They are only there because the rules were changed to help them and money was taken from Celtic to pay for it”.

They will forever be known as the Establishment club with definitive evidence that they benefited from the Establishment’s help.

The once-proud era of Scottish league football is surely over, what we are witnessing is merely evidence of this fact.  ‘Sport’ as gone from our football. Fans, clubs and the national bodies must accept this reality and start to make forward plans to breathe the oxygen of genuine competition into our game.

Where is Michel Platini when football really needs some help?

How come Airdrie and Dundee have to abstain when Charles Green was allowed to cast his vote last week?

Agreed. Perplexing and astonishing. Only in Scotland.

  3. Many are looking from Celtic (again) on something that hasn’t happened yet.

As far as I can see, there will be no Sevco playing in Scottish football in 2012/2013. There are no rules which allow this. Rules can be changed but not in time for this season.

Celtic will not surrender any of their home gate money. There are no rules which allow this. Any attempt to alter this will be challenged in the courts by Celtic on behalf of the shareholders.

There is no need of official comment from Celtic on any of these matters at this time.

    Only my opinions of course.

If you think that by asking about them that he’s onto something regarding the EBTs then you’re mistaken. You are supposing something and the explanation I gave wasn’t my supposition, it was what’s happening – I’m in a position to know. Sorry if that disappoints

    DUNDEE FOOTBALL CLUB STATEMENT

Dundee CEO Scot Gardiner today (4/7/2012) made the following statement on behalf of the Club.

“In order to try and bring some clarity to the situation for our fans and sponsors, I would like to outline some of the events of the last week or two in relation to Dundee FC and our position within the SFL.

When it became clear that the Clubs of the SFL were going to be called into Hampden on 3rd July to either take a vote or as it has been put, give a steer, in advance of a vote on Rangers Football Club being admitted into either Division 1 or Division 3, I immediately called the SFL.

The purpose of the call was to receive some guidance on whether Dundee FC would be conflicted in voting for either option as we would potentially be the direct beneficiaries of a yes vote in either case. I was very concerned that Dundee FC could be attacked or criticised for trying to influence the situation and or gain benefit for the Club by voting for either option.

The initial advice was that SFL rules clearly state that, save in extraordinary circumstances, ALL Members must vote and cannot abstain, such action would incur a heavy fine and there was an existing precedent.

Prior to the meeting however and following discussions with the SFL Office Bearers and their legal team, we were informed that these were extraordinary circumstances and there was indeed a clear conflict of interest and it would be against natural justice for us to vote. We could take part in the debate but not the vote. We were the only team in Division 1 told this as no other Club was conflicted.

Now that there is to be a formal vote on these matters at Hampden on the 12th July, our technical position is clear. We do not have to abstain as we cannot vote due to the stated potential conflict of interest which would be against natural justice. This is not our choice, it is however a fact that we cannot vote.

None of this means that we have been notified by the SPL, SFL or the SFA that our status as an SFL Club has changed or is due to change because we have not. We do hope however that this situation can be addressed as quickly as possible as it is clearly and obviously a tremendous distraction for all of us at Dundee FC with the season looming larger than ever.”

  9. Yes I read ’em. Peevish and malicious, and utterly, wholeheartedly, superhumanly dedicated to sidestepping the question. What do you think should be done about a league where one club has more money than just about all the rest put together? Nothing at all? Or some clever-clever crack about letting Kilmarnock keep 38 visitors’ admissions. If you think it’s OK, if you think it’s sustainable say so.

  10. If, come Friday 13th, a sufficient number of SFL clubs bow to Establishment pressure to let a brand new club skip two divisions without having submitted 3 years accounts or otherwise prove it is a viable entity and if the brand new club thereby escapes any future punishment for the sins of another club (thanks to the SPL prevarication over the (“prima facie”) dual contracts case), does anyone think that Celtic have a resignation letter ready to be faxed/emailed/posted online setting out our intention to resign from the SFA/SPL in 2 years on the grounds that the integrity of the game would have been compromised???

if there is to be gate sharing we might have to get the old board back to count the crowd.

That is my recollection as well, I do not think it was anything to do with season tickets as such, although if you were looking for a season ticket holder in those days, the Stand is where you would find them.

  14. So, if you did read ’em how about withdrawing the martyred attitude that you don’t call people names, only others bad-mouth you.

As for answering points, dirtymacs repeated challenge about the perverse incentives for both the sharer and potential freeloaders at 21.18 remains unanswered despite several attempts to raise it with you.

  15. deliasmith on 9 July, 2012 at 22:55 said:

Incentives … I am reminded of the fable of the man who’d trained his donkey to eat less and less and just when he’d got it accustomed to eat nothing at all the bugger died.

How to put this? It’s not the sole function of a provincial football club to find players to sell – they would quite like to win the odd game, or even trophy.

Irrelevant, and quite frankly, the first part is a load of insulting bollocks and the second already happens – see last season.

That’s right.Gate sharing is a handicap on the biggest club, that’s the point.

So, by reducing the likelihood and indeed ability of the top club to compete beyond these meagre shores, tell me: how does that increase the quality of the league? How do we market a lesser product, led by a lesser club?

Or, more accuratelyonly gate sharing will fix this. What else would fix it? The only sizeable source of income in Scottish football is gate money.

The key is – are you interested in dealing with this imbalance, or are you happy for it to continue?

How many times do you have to look at this question before you address it squarely: What future is there for a league of Celtic and 11 dwarfs? Seriously, what’s to be done?

And as for the rest of the comments: what a peevish, malicious bunch you are. I don’t call people names, and if I see a point made in good faith I’ll answer it. I don’t suspect the motives or provenance of, or smear, people who disagree with me, but if you attack me as a person I’ll fight back. I think with Paul’s argument based on “It’s your money they’re after” – is a mean and unCeltic slogan, and I am pleased to be against it.

I will ask this one more time: How does gate-sharing fix the imbalances of our league?

Provide some figures, if you would be so kind, as I’ll provide some of my own off the top of my head…

Celtic’s income, in a CL Group season, will be c.£70m. We will net share around £5-6m, meaning that we’ll have around £65m to play around with. Without the CL money, we’ll have around £45-50m to play around with. Anything past the CL groups and our income will soar close to £80m.

Hearts will remain pretty static (or will net share out, if their gate income goes up by much). Ditto for Aberdeen. Both of these clubs are among the worst hamstrung by debt; neither will be affected much by any gate-sharing effect, except that those below them may well find it easier to overtake them en masse.

So, I ask you: are you interested in dealing with this imbalance, or are you happy for it to continue?

For this to happen Celtic would be forced by the majority for it to happen.

The 11 – “We want 30% of your gate for the next 3 years, after which Rangers, who you will have already subsidised, will be back and we’ll change the rules and ask for a higher percentage, thereby creating a more level playing field!”

Celtic – “Where do we send the cheque?”
