Newco born from patronage of monetary inducements

740

Let’s be clear about what is going to happen on Friday.  Monetary inducements are being made to allow a newly created company to advance its football team two divisions up the league structure.

The overwhelming majority of money to pay for these financial inducements will be taken from Celtic, who vehemently oppose all these measures.  The SPL will reduce the commercial distribution to the top club in the league and pay-off everyone else.  41 teams will benefit financially from this proposition, only Celtic will lose.

For good measure, the SPL have declined to take gate sharing off the table.  Up to 30% of your season ticket money will soon be commandeered by Kilmarnock, Motherwell and the rest, who will take their slice and share some with the lower leagues.

All the while you can scarcely find a football fan of any club who is anything other than disgusted by this shoddy behaviour; Celtic fans are by no means isolated.  Most fans of former-club, Rangers, don’t want to see a phoenix assisted by such blatant patronage, lest Newco is forever known as a team which needed rules to be changed and money taken from Celtic to give it life.

Believe me, if Newco exists for 100 years, every day they score a goal someone will say, “They are only there because the rules were changed to help them and money was taken from Celtic to pay for it”.

They will forever be known as the Establishment club with definitive evidence that they benefited from the Establishment’s help.

The once-proud era of Scottish league football is surely over, what we are witnessing is merely evidence of this fact.  ‘Sport’ as gone from our football. Fans, clubs and the national bodies must accept this reality and start to make forward plans to breathe the oxygen of genuine competition into our game.

Where is Michel Platini when football really needs some help?

As I posted earlier, gate sharing ended in February 1981.

Season ticket holders were very few in number at all clubs in those days.

Celtic’s season ticket “revolution” started in the Centenary season when the numbers jumped dramatically to around 10000 I believe.

It was the actual cash collected on the day which was split between the clubs.

Around 1983/84 my brother visted Desmond White’s office in Bath Street and literally pleaded to be allowed to purchase a Main Stand season ticket for him and his son.

    All the cash up front.

Desmond was having none of it!

His response was along the lines of season ticket holders making too many demands of the club in return for their stakeholdiing.

    Changed days.

No Sevco Scotland in the Scottish Football League

    Some random thoughts?

    Does Walter have an EBT?

    Does Alistair have an EBT?

When will we hear about the dual contract investigation?

    What is Campbell Ogilvie doing?

Did Rangers pay the SFA compensation when Walter walked away from Scotland?

If the SPL are party to any threat to the SFL then last weeks’ vote may not carry the same level of integrity many of us hoped. Indeed, it would be an act of duplicity. We vote against Sevco so that you can vote them into Division 1, beginning three weeks from now. Is that the Masterplan? Not great it has to be said.

As for gate sharing, that ended back in the mid 1970s, with the Gang of Ten. We were one of them by the way. Cannot in all seriousness see it coming back this Friday, though stranger things have happened recently under the banner of Scottish football. Anyway, what would happen to the £2 million if we don’t give it to the SFL, (for disobeying), is it going to be shared out too?

Bingo. Clarity. And just take a guess who’d be right at the top of the pile with that understanding. Celtic.

The end of gate sharing (February 1981) I think was overshadowed by the introduction of the Criminal Justice (Scotland) Act 1980 which became effective the previous month.

  10. Has newco or D&P asked Souness for the £30 grand back as it was obviously an error?

    ===================================

I bought my first season ticket after we won the centenary double. The immediate years afterwards was blind devotion as the football on offer steadily deteriorated in the face of a rampant hun.

  13. The Barca-esque membership model will not happen if gate-sharing is voted in.

    Why?

Because the members are the annual ‘owners’ of the club, meaning that in order to facilitate this, DD would have to relinquish his shareholding in the club.

    Although…

How much do you think it would cost to relieve him of this? And how about the membership (read: season ticket), given what it’s for, being used in the first year to pay off Desmond and have us survive on reduced income, possibly boosted by CL income, for that season?

btw, it would also mean that existing shareholders would receive a proportionate dividend initially (to buy the £120 season book, perhaps?)

Therafter, we pay an annual sub of c £300, which purchases a full voting right* and also a £300 discount voucher for a season book.

*No individual could control the club thereafter, unless they bought up tens of thousands** of memberships.

**Memberships should be restricted to 50 per individual, which gives 50 AGM votes, etc. This would allow groups to bulk up their ‘member’.

  22. Cheers Vmhan takes over where Gus left off. Still at least Gus went quietly, haha, I think I had a bad dream after that one and I am no spring chicken. Canny wait.

  23. Why gate-sharing in a skewed league is bad:

    – for the smaller, receiving clubs, it reduces the incentives (to raise cash) to produce your own players

Incentives … I am reminded of the fable of the man who’d trained his donkey to eat less and less and just when he’d got it accustomed to eat nothing at all the bugger died.

How to put this? It’s not the sole function of a provincial football club to find players to sell – they would quite like to win the odd game, or even trophy.

    – for the bigger, giving club, it reduces income ergo ‘something’ gives. ‘Something’ takes the form of short term sales of ‘star players’ and often a downsizing also of youth development. That’s right.Gate sharing is a handicap on the biggest club, that’s the point.

Comparisons with yesteryear are utterly irrelevant in this argument in that crowd sizes were not so disparate as they are now and also merchandising income was very level amongts clubs, i.e. pretty much non-existent.

Incomes/turnover at the five biggest clubs in Scotland were within a margin of around +/-20% of the 3rd largest club. Income/turnover at Celtic next season, assuming CL group stages, will outstrip the rest of the SPL put together.

Gate sharing will not fix this Or, more accuratelyonly gate sharing will fix this. What else would fix it? The only sizeable source of income in Scottish football is gate money.

The key is – are you interested in dealing with this imbalance, or are you happy for it to continue?

How many times do you have to look at this question before you address it squarely: What future is there for a league of Celtic and 11 dwarfs? Seriously, what’s to be done?

And as for the rest of the comments: what a peevish, malicious bunch you are. I don’t call people names, and if I see a point made in good faith I’ll answer it. I don’t suspect the motives or provenance of, or smear, people who disagree with me, but if you attack me as a person I’ll fight back. I think with Paul’s argument based on “It’s your money they’re after” – is a mean and unCeltic slogan, and I am pleased to be against it.

1992 General election. Opinion polls said Neil Kinnock was going to win. He didn’t and they put it down to the fact that people were too embarrassed to tell the pollsters that they were going to vote Tory. People lied. You can do that with a secret ballot. Not that I’m suggesting that any SFL chairmen would lie about their voting intentions of course…..
