Newco born from patronage of monetary inducements

740

Let’s be clear about what is going to happen on Friday.  Monetary inducements are being made to allow a newly created company to advance its football team two divisions up the league structure.

The overwhelming majority of money to pay for these financial inducements will be taken from Celtic, who vehemently oppose all these measures.  The SPL will reduce the commercial distribution to the top club in the league and pay-off everyone else.  41 teams will benefit financially from this proposition, only Celtic will lose.

For good measure, the SPL have declined to take gate sharing off the table.  Up to 30% of your season ticket money will soon be commandeered by Kilmarnock, Motherwell and the rest, who will take their slice and share some with the lower leagues.

All the while you can scarcely find a football fan of any club who is anything other than disgusted by this shoddy behaviour; Celtic fans are by no means isolated.  Most fans of former-club, Rangers, don’t want to see a phoenix assisted by such blatant patronage, lest Newco is forever known as a team which needed rules to be changed and money taken from Celtic to give it life.

Believe me, if Newco exists for 100 years, every day they score a goal someone will say, “They are only there because the rules were changed to help them and money was taken from Celtic to pay for it”.

They will forever be known as the Establishment club with definitive evidence that they benefited from the Establishment’s help.

The once-proud era of Scottish league football is surely over, what we are witnessing is merely evidence of this fact.  ‘Sport’ as gone from our football. Fans, clubs and the national bodies must accept this reality and start to make forward plans to breathe the oxygen of genuine competition into our game.

Where is Michel Platini when football really needs some help?

the worry is that the people who denied them an SPL place did so on the understanding they’d get into Division 1.

Gate sharing IS going to happen.

The only reason it didn’t happen before is because the old firm stopped it.

Celtic will suffer a severe drop in season ticket sales

Maybes Celtic voted for upholding sporting integrity, maybes the other clubs voted to keep the huns out so they could change the voting and get their hands on our gate money.

I hope you are right and that they don’t get into division 1 for the same reasons that they didn’t get into the SPL but I wish I had your faith. It looks like they are trying to bribe and blackmail the wee teams with everything from money, play offs, voting structure and league reconstruction to get their way. The baws on the slates if they get their way and the game is finished, which I think they would prefer rather than the humiliation they deserve. Just like to say I do not like to use words like bribe and blackmail casually but this is what it is, and throw in corruption as well.

That would be a schoolboy error as they have no control over what the SFL clubs do.

The outcome has more to do with fan pressure than anything else.

They desperatly want them no lower than div 1, they say that without them the game is dead.

What am I missing here ? a hun team that has only 5 senior players are a stick on for relegation in div 1, huns being huns will not turn out to see their beloved getting humped week in week out, so where is the money coming from???

Oh nearly forgot, their beloved won’t be getting humped every week, the referees are still on board, silly me……

“When did gate sharing stop in Scotland, does anyone know?

Was it before or after we won the European Cup? ”

Interestingly, the question of when rules for so-called “gate sharing” were changed or formed was posed to delia smith several times but, as with dirtymac’s questions of 21.18, delia has a tendency only to collect and highlight abusive responses, so he can play the martyr and declare himself as the master debator.

Let’s say, for argument’s sake that a 50:50 split was common up to the 80’s, you could advance an argument, with face validity, that gate sharing makes us strong.

However, if you understand the difference between a causal relationship and a correlation, you would avoid such a deduction. For example, my granda always wore a red tie and lived till he was 90 despite smoking 40 a day (this bears no resemblance to my real granda BTW). I could assert, again with face validity, that a red tie will ward off cancer.

I feel the post war golden generation and the pre-Bosman contracts had more to do with Scottish football’s pre-eminence from the early 60s to mid-80s, than did gate sharing. And neither of those two causal factors are re-appearing any time soon.

  13. That gate sharing is a great idea, why did no one mention it when the huns had a team for every competition and were

spending other peoples money like it was going out of fashion?

    Jamiesbhoy , FF .

Everyone else (sounds like a speech now) . Wrt gate-sharing , my belief is that Celtic will have been number crunching based on various projections . I don’t believe (again , personal opinion) that any changes of this nature can be brought in this season and they’ll work on alternatives , e.g. a tour of Celtic Park is £400 and you get a voucher entitling you to £400 off the cost of a sb. Or we go to a membership model a la Barca (not too sure about that one ).

One thing i do know is that we , as a family , and as a group have stood strong before and will again. It’s difficult to stand up for your beliefs when everyone is against you and , in your darker moments , you doubt your position. How much easier is it this time for every SPL fan to look themselves in the mirror and KNOW that what they are doing , what they are standing up for , is the right thing ?

  18. Gate sharing is communism.

Like communism, it is vindictive, self-defeating, repressive, illiberal, and just fundamentally dumb.

Celtic could easily find a way around it – instead of having “gate cash”, we could simply revert to a membership system, where 500 quid gives you access to games and other perks. Or we could abolish tickets fro home fans altogether and instead turn our season-book holders into bondholders or investors.

I also believe Hearts would be against it, and possibly Aberdeen.

A more even distribution of revenue will probably happen soon, but gate receipts will be untouched.

I don’t know how many times I’ve said this, but I’m 99% sure that when there was gate sharing, the home season ticket sales were deducted before splitting the rest. Can any old yins out there confirm?

I posed two simple questions (again) at two minutes to nine. As I stated in my post, I expected no reply and was not disappointed. While I realise (as I think most reasonable people do) that it will be necessary to encourage other SPL clubs to increase their turnover and improve their teams, a 30 – 50% gate split as mentioned so far would amount to nothing more than a tax upon Celtic. From memory, I think that season ticket sales were ignored in the past and only cash from turnstiles was split. Perhaps we could agree either this or sharing away fan sales. However, I doubt the other clubs would agree. Better to change the distribution of both prize and TV monies, I suspect, and probably fairer on us.

I do agree that a moritorium might be in order. And stuff Media House…

Thanks for the link to 1981 as I was finding it difficult to get good info on what were the pre-1981 practices.

I found this in “The Association Game: A History of British Football”

“Gate sharing was abolished in Scotland in 1981 and two years later in England and Wales……

While such developments might be considered economically irrational at first glance, by increasing the inequalities between rich and poor and thus reducing the uncertainty of outcome presumed essential to successful sporting leagues, they were in fact logical for the best clubs, who were increasingly coming to see themselves as competitors in a European as well as a domestic market.”

  26. “When did gate sharing stop in Scotland, does anyone know?

I think it was in the 1980s. Shortly after our EC qf defeat to Real Madrid big Billy was quoted as being in favour of the Spanish system where the home team kept the gate.

  27. acoustamatix on

CQN, Celtic, PL, Lennon and co seem to be misjudging the mood among Scottish football fans and Celtic fans more specifically. With the issue of “honest mistakes” and the ref lying, Lennon, Lawwell, CQN, Celtic etc were quite vocal in demanding the process be examined to provide transparency and fair application of the rules, this also coincided with a period when Celtic, with a rookie manager, were struggling against a bankrupt Rangers side and there was a substantial unrest among the Celtic support. Having a go at the authorities, while admirable and long overdue, was a handy way to shift attention from the appointment of a rookie manager and from the failure of our highly paid squad to make inroads against a bankrupt (but now known to be cheating) Rangers.

But strangely, CQN, Celtic, PL, Lennon and co are now cajoling Celtic fans to buy into a butchered league structure which:

    a. is far from settled or even agreed yet

    b. seems to fly in the face of fair application of the rules

    c. is being re-negotiated without attention to fan sentiment by incompetent and likely corrupt governors who were trying to shoe-horn Sevco into the SPL last week without success

    d. is presided over by a man who was complicit in the height of the scandal which brought Rangers(in liquidation) to its knees

    e. is clearly against the wishes of most scottish football fans and most celtic fans more specifically

Where are the demands for a fair application of the rules by the custodians of our club now? The ink of the on-the-hoof plans for a butchered league structure is barely dry before another draft is penned and yet CQN, Celtic and Lennon are almost demanding that Celtic fans put their money up front and fund a bastardised league structure which is dripping with corruption and flies in the face of fan sentiment. They are asking Celtic fans to support a blueprint for bias and a continuation of the corrupt days of old.

Celtic would do well to pay attention to what the real Scottish football fans, the real Celtic fans are saying in their supporters clubs. If Sevco get in to the 1st div’n the integrity of the Scottish game, often questioned, is unquestionably dead and irretrievable. If Celtic fans are asked to buy into that proposed corrupt league structure, they are being asked to support and comply with the utter corruption which is being proposed and park any dreams of league integrity at the door. Celtic fans are being asked to support Campbell Ogilvie and the worst machinations of David Murray’s excesses.

Surely Celtic should instead should be putting forward the view of the overwhelming majority of Celtic and Scottish fans who are in total opposition to Sevco starting at any point above the 3rd division, rather than grubbing for money at such a pivotal time for the Scottish game. There is strong feeling among Scottish football fans that the right thing be done. The right thing doesn’t involve buying into a corrupt league structure so why are CQN, Celtic and Lennon demanding that?

I can’t confirm although it sounds plausible, we only had about 8000 ST’s/ season in those days so I doubt that would affect the argument. A poster ? Said earlier that it would be against European laws to price fix, so going down the membership scheme along the lines of auldheids model would be a way to go for CFC.
