News: there is no McInnes news

296

After a weekend when we all got odd-jobs around the house done, real football is back tomorrow as the champions head to Dingwall to face Owen Coyle’s auntie’s nephew’s side attempt to take a point or more.

Owen is not Brendan Rodgers, but he is no mug, and will have watched how Steve Clarke, Tommy Wright and Neil Lennon did to hold Celtic this season. They will fight for everything.

Biggest news to come out of the international break is that there is absolutely no news about Derek McInnes. The Aberdeen manager is still the Aberdeen manager, despite his move down the table being suggested by every rent-a-quote in the game.

I remember when Old Rangers were unable to entice a manager from either Aberdeen or Dundee United (Jock Stein counselled both targets against the role). A lot has been liquidated since then, but Newco find themselves trying to achieve what Oldco couldn’t in 1983: recruit a manager from another Scottish club.

Getting McInnes is a fairly straightforward business. He has an agreed compensation figure in his contract; agree to meet that sum and do the deal with the manager. We both know that Newco don’t have any discretionary budget, waiting to be spent on managerial compensation, but if you were convinced you had the right man, you would find the cash somewhere.

No one really knows if McInnes would take the job, although it’s clear matters have not reached that stage yet, despite the passing of three weeks since he was first targeted. We were all convinced he was heading to Sunderland earlier this year, until he completed his due diligence on the club and decided to stay where he was. The length of time it is taking to open talks surely makes a move to Ibrox less enticing.

Not that it really matters, we’ll spank both teams, whoever is in charge.

    Tontine Tim,

Just to let you know that a no longer young Fr O’Rourke is back in his beloved St Michael’s. I can remember him as a very young curate, who played with us in the street outside the original St Michael’s in Salamanca Street. A lovely lovely man

*Excellent, he would come out tae the Moss Park adjacent tae the chapel and play with us.

Saint Mary’s Duntocher is a fine Church indeed. Father Joe Mills recently retired was gifted the freedom of Clydebank by the cooncil. Great man who served his toon well.

*The building trade was full of Ben Afflecks back then and many a time us apprentices would jook intae Mass at St Marys on Holidays of Obligation as we went tae the shops for the journeymen. Did the same at St Stephens when working at the Dalmuir flats.

Sadly, Our Lady of Loretto Parish, Dalmuir was demolished, and Saint Stephen’s was deemed the one Dalmuir Parish to serve a falling congregation. Saint Patrick’s Church Old Kilpatrick was set on fire last year. The local Kirk opened it’s doors for a Catholic mass to be celebrated in their COS Church.

  14. DD fr. Joe was also in Holy Cross.

Looking forward to continuing the great run tomorrow in Dingwall.

  16. Hunderbirds are Gone on

Back home a few hours ago from my last goodbye to my great friend Dougie, who’s celebration of his life gathering was held at Firhill Crematorium today. Before he died he had asked me if I would take the service. I am quite an emotional person and although daunted by the prospect, I was also deeply honoured that he had trusted me to do this for him. Since he asked me about a month ago, the service had obviously dominated my thoughts, and had been my last thought before falling asleep, and my first thought when I awakened.

Last week the inevitable abstract certainty of his death due to cancer, became a painful reality. I had asked Doug the last time I saw him, was he going to want some level of religious input as his death grew nearer. “No” he replied, “too hypocritical”.

Only yesterday was I able to get some words down on paper, and on awakening this morning, faced a three hour car journey, to do one last favour my great friend. To be honest, if he had not asked me himself, I would have called off with some poor excuse. I have never felt such a weight of expectation in my life.

Standing in front of over four hundred souls, in front of Dougie’s coffin, I wondered if I would even be able to speak. To see his wife, his two children, his father, his mother and his twin sister, all stricken with grief, looking at me at the lectern, was testing to say the least.

Anyway, I am happy to report that I managed to cope, and only cracked a bit on the last few words. At the end of the service, his father walked straight up to the lectern, and thanked me profusely. I could only say, I hope I done him justice. He said, “ you certainly did” and thanked me again.

I had heartfelt thanks and lovely comments from all of his family at the wake, as I moved around them, and I only hope that my words can offer them some comfort in the difficult weeks and months that they face to come.

That’s the tears now. Thank you to all on here who offered best wishes and prayers for Dougie’s poor family.

Goodnight mate, I will miss you.

  21. Hunderbirds, well done. That sounded like a very tough gig.

I know Dougie mightn’t approve but I’ll say a wee prayer for him anyway.

With that I’ll bid ye all Good Night & God Bless.

First time I’ve used a laptop for a year or so….getting attacked from all angles by adverts. They at times seem to be taking over.

Anyway, Delaney’s, your sis has got Marcus.

My wife has got her boy – both talented beyond belief – and both yet to be recognised.

They have a lot in common…and both born in Glasgow.
