Nordsjaelland, stalking-horse Harry, Hooper

1126

Just two years after winning their first trophy, FC Nordsjælland from Denmark qualified for last season’s Champions League group stage.  They drew one and lost five of their games and were on the receiving end of one of the Champions League’s worst ever piece of sporting behaviour, by a Shakhtar Donetsk player.  Cash wise, they did all right.

They received €8.6m for reaching the group stage and €500k performance bonus but they also received 11.3m euro from the market pool.  By comparison, Benfica received €2.3m, while Porto and Anderlecht each received 3.2m.  Nordsjælland’s opponents in next week’s third qualifying round, Zenit, received €6m from the market pool, while Celtic received €8m.

Celtic, Nordsjælland and Ajax (€9.8m) benefited from being their country’s only participate in the group stage, and from having television deals which are comparatively better than their east European competitors (Bate Borisov earned €290k).

Juventus and Milan, being Italy’s only two representatives, cleaned up, earning €44.8m and €36.2m respectively from the market pool.  By comparison, Arsenal, one of four from England, earned a more modest €15.8m.

In short, the lesson is, if you come from an small west-European league and want to earn money from the Champions League, it’s far better to be the only competitor from your territory.  We shouldn’t forget this among all the complaints about having to play three qualifying rounds due to the lack of success in Europe by other Scottish clubs.

On the subject of which, good luck to St Johnstone tonight.

Gary Hooper wanted to go to Norwich City in January but the club, knowing his desire to leave Glasgow, offered a little over £2m for his services.  In stepped the unintended stalking-horse, QPR boss, Harry Redknapp, who met Celtic’s valuation and forced Norwich City’s hand.  City have returned to the table with an acceptable bid.

One rash club can cause havoc in the transfer market, even when they don’t buy a player.

Training for 1254125 10k is now underway. See yesterday’s article for sign-up details.

  1. So who are we signing by today to replace Hooper to ensure he is eligible for next week?

  2. Charity is the biggest single political statement, so how can they say on the one breath we are non political then on the other rave about our charitable ethos ?

Kelvin bhoy, I asked you a question, show me where they said all the damaged seats were in 111

  3. Re bangers : going to the league triumph at Killie 2 seasons ago, the banger brigade were there , throwing bangers under the cars of 70 year old plus frail pensioners. These morons need to be ejected , they will grow up and still be morons , so the support need to self police and fess up these plonkers.

This is not ” cleansing” this is self protection

These eejits really believe that they are the story – that they are “real” CFC supporters and anyone who doesn’t share their world view shouldn’t really be at CP

The cult of the ultras has practically destroyed football in Italy

Look at the attendances – lower every season and a big part of that is the violence carried out by the ultras

Now I’m not for a minute suggesting that the Green Brigade are about to start all that nonsense but I am saying that the ultras scene has some big minuses as well as the colour and noise

Bottom line is these incidents have to stop or the club will suffer even more

If individuals or a group want to put themselves before the club then they should be excluded

17:32 on 25 July, 2013MickTTI stand corrected the GB are bad bad bhoys and those paragons of virtue the denizens of the Jungle never caused a single problem never san any songs remotely connected to Ireland or indeed caused any single affray that would cause a member of the board any concernI agree the fireworks have to stop ……but get a grip the ground is like a morgue at times and the GB are adding spectacle ….but they don’t think the corporate way so the knives are out.

I’m not condemning the GB only the fireworks and “bangers”, the songs I never mentioned, only that I was part of the Jungle culture, similar in most ways, only highlighted that there was an atmosphere before the GB and they don’t have the exclusive rights on atmosphere.I felt, maybe wrongly, you were implying that only the GB members know what a real atmosphere is and that all the other duffers in the stadium wouldn’t know what atmosphere was if it hit them on the face.

But we grow up, mature and see damage being done to the club, as will moat GB members in the future.

Yep they bring a terrific atmosphere, and keep it up, but UEFA look more into these things than in previous years, and that’s why the club will act.

    P.S I don’t do grips, anything I’ve ever got,I got myself….!

  8. Is it likely that the eejit with the fireworks reads this site – if so – GTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where do you think the seats were then?

In other sections possibly one or two maybe 10 so I ask you how many seats do you think in section 111 were broken and what are your thoughts on this type of behaviour?

  10. It is heartening to read so many supporters willing to condemn this moronic behaviour. They do indeed believe themselves to be superior supporters to the rest of us it seems. I mean those who wish to sing offensive songs and just ignore safety advice. They would appear to revel in their belief that they are ‘victims’. Time to get tough.

  11. 67Heaven ... I am Neil Lennon..!!.. Ibrox belongs to the creditors on

For the benefit of future sales, and because he did so well for us, I hope Gary does really well at Norwich….I was disappointed that he seemed to ‘take the foot off the pedal’ a bit this year, but allthe best, Gary ….. Really liked the look of Balde on Wednesday…..

  12. Impossible to defend the green brigade on this.

If Huns come to Celtic Park and smash up the seats we would not be happy, yet the green brigade think its great fun.

I’ve been to an event in celtic park at night and it was embarrassing looking at the state that section was in.

Breaking your own seats- Hun behaviour

Now I love the atmosphere they bring, but until the green brigade existed how many times where we up before eufa?

    How many times now?

Fire works and bangers, they have been repeatedly asked to stop, but continue to use them – Hun behaviour.

I’m sure they usually then try and blame Celtic too.

I was sitting next to them when it went off on Tuesday and nearly shat myself.

Can you imagine an old guy with a dodgy heart? They need to get back to singing and bringing a great atmosphere and cut out the idiotic behaviour.

I dare say they will have a statement out soon saying it wasnt them and they didn’t break any seats. Was all Peter Lawwells fault.

  13. John O’Neill

You seem determined to kick off a debate about what you deem offensive songs despite wise council not to do so – and you accuse others of having an agenda…

    ——

Like everyone else, I agree, the fireworks, smoke bombs and bangers are utterly stupid and annoying. That should stop. I applaud the GB for the efforts they make in supporting Celtic but now is the time to cut out the silliness.

  15. What cannot be allowed to happen, no matter what, is a them and us type relationship with the GB. I went to a Roma match a few years ago and their stands were empty apart from the Cur Va Sud stand which was filler by ultras who, although mental and full of colour and noise, had no interest in watching the game. I got the impression that the Curva Ultras were so strong/outspoken that it effected other areas of the stadium. The GB should never be more than a support element at CP. They need to realise they’re part of the fan base and nothing more, many if not most appreciate what they bring but if they start getting too big for their boots it could really harm the club and I’m not talking health and safety code.

  16. Kelvinbhoy,

Still can’t find were it says it and neither can you, because it doesn’t say it, but it was a big part of your mump, because that’s what you wanted to read, unlike you I only accept what is said at face value, and 131 seats were damaged at the game, not necessarily in section 111.

It’s simple PR, neither am I discounting there were not a lot damaged in section 111 but that is not what the statement says, as I say face value is probably the safest way to go, take each point as an individual point.

  17. An Dun, others brought up the subject of chants. I then gave my opinions. My agenda is that people should not risk the safety of others or subject others to offensive songs about murderers. Nor should they harm Celtic. By the way An Dun, the vast majority of people would find such chants offensive if they understood the lyrics. Thankfully most don’t. Do not blame me for introducing the topic. I agree with everything else you say.

  18. The Green Brigade are youthful, enthusiastic and energetic.

No wonder so many posters on here don’t like them.

  19. One last point An Dun – Celtic deem the songs offensive. Jock Stein did. Martin O’Neill did and Neil Lennon does. My opinion is irrelevant compared to those men.

  20. Coming up as the 3rd top story on Scotland today….”board warn the green brigade”

  21. JungleJim

Sorry mate the bangers were let off in the section 111 of the GB. I sit in Section 109. It unquestionably was set off by someone in the GB area.

It needs to be cut out pronto. If only for the sake of the state of my underwear…but seriously this can have severe repercussions for Celtic FC.

  22. I should correct my last statement. I don’t know whether they found/find the chants offensive. However I know that they didn’t/don’t want Celtic supporters singing them at Celtic games.

    17:59 on 25 July, 2013Kelvinbhoy,

I think you’ll find its been reported that 131 seats were damaged, and from that, the club are infering it was in the GB section, that was my take on it, for what it’s worth. The point being, seats were damaged.

‘The vast majority of people…if they understood…’ – A rather silly statement. Remember, like myself, on this forum you speak for yourself and yourself alone. You’re not a spokesperson for the Celtic support so cut out the vast majority BS.

In keeping with the requests to not bring politics into the debate, I’ll leave it there.

  26. if gb want to make more noise why not just get another/ bigger drum etc… tbh the bangers added very little to the atmosphere on Tuesday, but it cost us thousands. but for sure celtic park would be poorer without the gb, come on bhoys keep within the rules HH

seems hooper is finally off and I wish him well, good player and goal scorer. keen to see another youngish player 22 – 24 years old( in the 3 million bracket) brought in, but not keen on anymore than two new players (max) coming in.

  30. I agree that politics should not enter the debate. That is the point with this group of fans though.

  31. Tim tanium ,

There are quite a few supporter in section 111 who are not the GB, in fact some post on here, all you can actually say for certain is that the fireworks were let off in section 111.

There was a post earlier about one of our brethren taking his kids to the final I think it was, and some one let of a smoke canister which upset his kids, what I found interesting was after 10 mins the culprit left, that to me does not sound like someone who turned up to see the game, just my suspicious mind I suppose but it appears our paranoia is after all a moral compass.
