Nordsjaelland, stalking-horse Harry, Hooper

1126

Just two years after winning their first trophy, FC Nordsjælland from Denmark qualified for last season’s Champions League group stage.  They drew one and lost five of their games and were on the receiving end of one of the Champions League’s worst ever piece of sporting behaviour, by a Shakhtar Donetsk player.  Cash wise, they did all right.

They received €8.6m for reaching the group stage and €500k performance bonus but they also received 11.3m euro from the market pool.  By comparison, Benfica received €2.3m, while Porto and Anderlecht each received 3.2m.  Nordsjælland’s opponents in next week’s third qualifying round, Zenit, received €6m from the market pool, while Celtic received €8m.

Celtic, Nordsjælland and Ajax (€9.8m) benefited from being their country’s only participate in the group stage, and from having television deals which are comparatively better than their east European competitors (Bate Borisov earned €290k).

Juventus and Milan, being Italy’s only two representatives, cleaned up, earning €44.8m and €36.2m respectively from the market pool.  By comparison, Arsenal, one of four from England, earned a more modest €15.8m.

In short, the lesson is, if you come from an small west-European league and want to earn money from the Champions League, it’s far better to be the only competitor from your territory.  We shouldn’t forget this among all the complaints about having to play three qualifying rounds due to the lack of success in Europe by other Scottish clubs.

On the subject of which, good luck to St Johnstone tonight.

Gary Hooper wanted to go to Norwich City in January but the club, knowing his desire to leave Glasgow, offered a little over £2m for his services.  In stepped the unintended stalking-horse, QPR boss, Harry Redknapp, who met Celtic’s valuation and forced Norwich City’s hand.  City have returned to the table with an acceptable bid.

One rash club can cause havoc in the transfer market, even when they don’t buy a player.

Training for 1254125 10k is now underway. See yesterday’s article for sign-up details.

It’s still a petty argument, seats broken…! Maybe it was in the away end.?

I read somewere last week that big vic signed a 4 year deal worth 30k a week.

  3. I think the effect that some have described in Italy with the ultras scaring away other fans is happening here. Some of what the GB have done in the last few years has been good but the anti SFA chants and constant feuding with our board is wearying. Often I’d rather we concentrated on the game rather than some booing or noises coming from them. I’m from that part of our fan base whose families were starved out of Ireland a century or so ago but I don’t feel the need to constantly link Celtic to the politics of Ireland. I’d like us to cease from having groups within our support and revert to us all being Celtic supporters.

  4. I agree with Malarkey. I don’t think we should indulge John O’Neill. The man is perfectly entitled to his opinion and to share that opinion.

However, he seems intent on stirring division when there’s no need. Celtic have issued a safety statement highlighting safety issues and this guy wants to talk about the IRA ! I think he has an agenda and I won’t participate in that.

Your not out to make new friends that’s clear, and you bang on that the point of the GB is politics, completel nonsense, the point is to re create the atmosphere of the old CP.

You seem to playing to some agenda, is it a political thing or something else?

  7. Mixed up An Dun with someone else. An Dun, of course I accept the issue is complicated. The facts are clear though that murders happened. You would be surprised what I have read.

  9. I have stated before that my fear for the kids in the GB is that they are being led by older and more political people who are attached to the European ultra scene.

With regard to the singing of prohibited songs, I deeply regret that these songs are deemed to be offensive and am not about to be a hypocrite as I have sung them all and more.

However the flares and fireworks are totally out of order and will only get us into more trouble with UEFA. I agree with others that UEFA have more important things to crack down on.

Nevertheless there is no one going to tell me that we should accept behaviour that could result in the club receiving a ban.

So GB either toe the line or GTF, we will be here long after you have got fed up with your stupid pranks and find something else to vent your political objective.

  10. The atmosphere at German football is generated by the ultras.

Don’t make the green brigade out like the Italian ultras who intimidate the players etc.

Before leaving may I just add that I admire your stance and I’d defend your right to express your opinion, I’d also agree with you that Celtic Park really isn’t a place to sing songs that could give offence to responsible people.

In closing I have to say I’m dubious of a man who drops the apostrophe, have you a problem with that as well?

Good night and may God bless all CQNers.

  12. Vnham, Are you saying the GB aren’t political? Vnham we all have agendas. I converse with people here most days now so while not saying they are friends, I write.

An Dun, others mentioned chants. Chants refer to IRA chants. IRA chants are sung at some Celtic games. Celtic don’t want it. Others have condemned them yet you only focus on me. The issue arose because of the GB.

  13. There we go, Celtic supporters ripped up like toilet paper on all the 6 o’clock news stations, Green Brigade …take a bow, you got your headlines, IDIOTS?

The Green Brigade are political with a small ‘p’.

  17. Murdoch, it wasn’t dropped. No need to be dubious. I also admire people who believe firmly in a cause. I just looked through ‘Ten Men Dead’ yesterday. Somebody asked why the songs were offensive. I answered. Once again, I accept that the issue is complicated. Moreover, I understand why they are sung in Glasgow. However it is time to move on.

  18. Stein, I have not been on their website but others here have said they are political. I am happy to say sorry if they are not political.

Lets see if anyone is willing to play a wee game on the blog.

The game of intelligent civilised debate.

Anybody willing to have a go at these ?

Did the SPFL invite the beast or did he gatecrash ?

If the beast was invited as there is no sponsor to give them the blame then

what kind of statement of intent about the future of our game from the new

regime after all the shenanigans these last two years especially ?

…or are EBTs now legal ? I may have missed the ruling.

And why an ex Rangers manager keeping the promise of successive promotions

and Cardihun E.B.T and Sally as being great guys.

SPFL like the SPL before them still selling to a public that are now cosmetically

a division higher than last year. Throwing their full weight already in the

    Ogilvie, Cardihun, Bus burners triumvirate.

Pandering to Sevco …..errrm ….why not even a hint of pretence anymore ?

Has anybody on the blog noted that ?

Is the new branding to do with trying to ditch the toxic SPL brand as far as the

    huns are concerned ?

And Celtic have no input into this OR they like what they are seeing ?

And the football authorities trot out all in the name of the Mc Leish report

for the permanently gullible. Anybody remember what he said last summer about

    Sevcos rightful place ?

I see OUR charities will be doing well this year. Lets hope our creative accountancy

is not as good as the new better go faster stripes of the SPFL or the needy could be

    losing out.

Its quite obvious that Phil and Paul have been reigned in with regards investigative

journalism after the 5 way agreement and that is what journalists do. Especially in

Scotland. Dont bite the hand that feeds. I can understand that

But what is our collective excuse ?

    Who cares ?

What can poor Celtic do about it ?

    Too many questions ?

    Loadsamoney ?

Does the silence and acceptance of this particularly overt slap in the face

not concern the Celtic support as long as we are making money ?

Yeah it hurts the head so lets get ready to rumble ?

It is far more than ironic reading this blog these days that we refer to the Dons

    fans as sheep.

10 in a row … how pitiful is that considering how the hun got his 9iar and the

same people are in charge ?

Anyway you look at it its Old Firm.

    Everybody happy with that ?

Getting angry about these legitimate questions, Calling me a hun, or trying to

disparage my character is permitted. It proves that your Old Firm and that you dont

want that boat being rocked and it is as good as confirmation for me .. where we

are heading as a support and a club.

  20. Dear all

Please try and understand that section 111, is not wholly Green Brigade.

There was a whole new load of young Celts arrived last season, taking up empty seats caused by banning orders, false arrests and harassment, most of the main GB can’t attend football matches due to the harassment, the younger lads have moved into this area and don’t have the same respect for CFC\ our property and good name. We need to reclaim 111 and stop the non ticket holders getting into the area, shame really that but it needs fixed.

  23. I am puzzled. I see yet another new away kit heading our way. Yellow with green bands.

“As for pitch invasions after a friendly in England. Yeh that’s gonna make the English want us to join the big league.”

The pitch invasions have absolutely nothing to do with Celtic joining the English league.

Cardiff fans regularly invade the pitch at matches – is that going to stop them participating in the ‘big league’?

    ————-

The pitch invasions aren’t the biggest obstacle. But they’re unlikely to be listed under the ‘pros’ column if someone were to weigh up whether they want us in England. In my opinion.

Cardiff fans invading a pitch obviously isn’t going to stop them participating in the big league. I shouldn’t have to point out that they were already in the English football league; and I doubt very much their recent promotion to the ‘big league’ would be refused on the grounds of the odd pitch invasion.

Guys guys guys, the bickering on here today is unbelievable. For my tuppence worth:

From my seat in the South stand, the GB are approx. in the 1 o’clock position. I honestly thought the bangers went off nearer the 3 o’clock position. Yes they were doing their lateral dance, and the stewards moved in at that point. The stewards were in attendance when the second and third banger went off. So, where were they and what action, if any did they take.

Agreed, they gave me a helluva fright, but no more than when the stadium announcer came on to convey the match officials request to stop the fireworks. Songs, let the people sing. No one ever died singing a song. I bet someone on here will correct me. The GB bring a brilliant atmosphere to the stadium and I would maybe consider not renewing my ST if they were barred. This is, of course, IMHO.

if you look ay the graphic for season books on the official site section 111 is totally sold out, there are no walk ups in that area, this may be the 1st time in a few years this has been the case, if the squibs did not come from the main core of the GB they should be trying to make inroads into who excatly did because the bangs definitely came from 111, and they are the ones getting it in the neck.

  30. J ONeil

Some are, the reason I stand in the GB is that I love helping them bring back that brilliant atmosphere.

The GB are fine but they need to make it clear to the young team what’s NOT acceptable, it might be your own children in there ripping up seats.
