Nordsjaelland, stalking-horse Harry, Hooper

1126

Just two years after winning their first trophy, FC Nordsjælland from Denmark qualified for last season’s Champions League group stage.  They drew one and lost five of their games and were on the receiving end of one of the Champions League’s worst ever piece of sporting behaviour, by a Shakhtar Donetsk player.  Cash wise, they did all right.

They received €8.6m for reaching the group stage and €500k performance bonus but they also received 11.3m euro from the market pool.  By comparison, Benfica received €2.3m, while Porto and Anderlecht each received 3.2m.  Nordsjælland’s opponents in next week’s third qualifying round, Zenit, received €6m from the market pool, while Celtic received €8m.

Celtic, Nordsjælland and Ajax (€9.8m) benefited from being their country’s only participate in the group stage, and from having television deals which are comparatively better than their east European competitors (Bate Borisov earned €290k).

Juventus and Milan, being Italy’s only two representatives, cleaned up, earning €44.8m and €36.2m respectively from the market pool.  By comparison, Arsenal, one of four from England, earned a more modest €15.8m.

In short, the lesson is, if you come from an small west-European league and want to earn money from the Champions League, it’s far better to be the only competitor from your territory.  We shouldn’t forget this among all the complaints about having to play three qualifying rounds due to the lack of success in Europe by other Scottish clubs.

On the subject of which, good luck to St Johnstone tonight.

Gary Hooper wanted to go to Norwich City in January but the club, knowing his desire to leave Glasgow, offered a little over £2m for his services.  In stepped the unintended stalking-horse, QPR boss, Harry Redknapp, who met Celtic’s valuation and forced Norwich City’s hand.  City have returned to the table with an acceptable bid.

One rash club can cause havoc in the transfer market, even when they don’t buy a player.

Training for 1254125 10k is now underway. See yesterday’s article for sign-up details.

16:30 on 25 July, 2013ok lets look at it this way ……0-0 in vital league decider …….89th minute……Celtic go up the park cross goes into the box …..opposition keeper misses it…..ball falls to Stokes ……..hands up those who don’t stand up………………..now I know it’s absurd exaggeration……but we all know we will stand and it’s illegal etc etc …..yes I know the GB should put away the pyrotechnics …………but I suspect an awful lot would still gripe and complain …………because they are as agenda driven as they claim the GB to be …..before the GB Celtic Park had as much atmosphere as a pub on the Moon …..mainly I suspect because of the average age of those who can afford a ST they bring colour they bring spectacle they bring noise ……..ask yourself why some would do away with them.

Atmosphere at Celtic Park is not a new thing that the GB have brought to Paradise, it’s not exclusive to them. I think what they bring is fantastic, but it was there much the same when the Jungle was in situ, some of us are maybe older now and sensible, wanting to be able to have the stadium lit up, now by the GB, but not by flares and bangers. I stood in the Jungle for years, that was an atmosphere to behold. Yep believe it there was an atmosphere before the GB it’s not a new thing, but to keep it you have to comply, I think the board have given fair warning…

  3. The GB have been good for generating an atmosphere at CP even for turgid games. However they are increasingly becoming a risk to Celtic unless they modify their behaviour.

The bangers on Tuesday night were irresponsible…first of all because I nealry keeked myself when the first one went off and more importantly there were young kids in the vicinty of area 111 on Tuesday night. If they bring the wrath of UEFA down on Celtic what have they achieved?

Have fun bhoys and ghirls but not to the detriment of the club you claim to support.

On Hooper…I see my call to Delia paid dividends. Gary will be a success..he is a natural goalscorer. Teamed up with Van Wolfswinkel they will be very potent and fed by the very clever Wes Hoolahan Norwich could be top ten material next season.

Having smoke flares at game is daft.

First all people safety is at stake and also if somebody has a heary condition and is stuck undreneat a large banner when somone lets one off ie like the cup final, it’s dangerous.

GB terrific atmosphere but i think they need to take a look themselvesd regarding a few songs they sing and other daft antics.

  10. If we sign Kevin Doyle or anybody else they should get our backing all the way. If Neil gets the men he wants…we must trust in his and John Parks judgement. I think Kevin would score many goals in the SPFL but we would have to wait and see about Europe. He is without doubt an honest pro who would work his socks off for the team.

Also Dorrans would not be a bad shout but I would much prefer Snodgrass…..beast of a player (strong and brave with an eye for goal) and I believe a Tim to boot whilst I think Dorrans isnae.

It is true He is on our side, especially when we walk the narrow path over that gate that is most difficult to traverse and on that narrow path he is with us.

But we stray from the narrow path to the Broadway and all of its desires are there for us to see and we indulge, our thirsts are quenched but eventually our conscience is troubled and when it gets the better of us (our conscience) we head back to the gate that is difficult to traverse and we eventually get on to the narrow path again and suddenly He appears by our side again.

Jesus is always there it is just us that stray.

There is no judging here for none are qualified.

  13. Feelings on Doyle…

The chance to take a punt on someone who was a good player and possibly revive his career (same could have been said on McFadden). Would be a good move but only if it’s low risk financially. And should definitely NOT been seen as a priority target.

Can you point me to where it says they weren’t……think you are being a bit disingenuous to suggest that from the statement made by the Club that they were elsewhere. Do you have a view on an acceptable number?

I do sit more or less diagonally opposite where they were so fair and while in no way excusing their behaviour, what was being let off the other night were clearly a magnitude above a small banger.

The one positive to come out of it so far is that there’s a dialogue between the club and the fans.

The cynic in me thinks that in fact there was no real threat of closure of the section and the story is more about showing how the new appointment is already helping fan/board relations.

  16. 67, do the songs remember the victims? You know the ones who lost an eye or who are always anxious because of trauma? How about the ones who were abducted and executed thanks to a kangaroo court? They have to go. Celtic don’t want them. Jock Stein, MO’N and Lenny didn’t/don’t want them.

  17. Been thinking since Tuesday night who Rogic reminds me of? Apart from the fact that he has the gait of Bigfoot (have you noticed the way he walks…weird) but his style is reminiscient of someone. He looks languid but has nice balance and turn. He reminds me a bit of Robert Proscinescki! Now if he becomes half as good as Robert P we will have some player indeed!

  19. The Token Tim on

How hard is it to understand that by using flares/smoke bombs the Club will be fined and then more stringent punishment inflicted, not only by UEFA, but also here in Scotland by the relevant authorities??

Dont do it. Its not difficult.

Hopefully this will be the end of it.

However if it continues, then questions must be asked of those who continue to do so.

The GB, imo, are generally seen as being a welcome and integral part of the “matchday experience” now at Celtic Park, by a large number of the Celtic Support (and i include myself in this). The atmosphere they create is undoubtedly appreciated. I know my son and nephew (9 and 12 years old respectively) spend a fair amount of their time at the game watching the GB (we sit in 113) and love listening to them.

Have to admit that I do so myself too during some of the, lets call them, less exciting games. Had they been around back when I was 19 or so, then Im certain I wouldve been looking to “join up”.

However, when you know that certain actions will bring punishment to the Club and our hard earned reputation, then surely you would stop those actions?

    A no-brainer for me.

Here’s hoping the “Top Bhoys” have a word or 2 in the ears of those needing it and that will be the end of it.

Think you have a point there with John Paul Taylor’s new role……but he has a real live situation to get him bedded in. Hope it all works out and we can concentrate on cheering the Team with no side issues.

  21. We all seem to be agreed on one thing, no fireworks, bangers or smoke bombs are wanted. Lets forget about the divisive “political” thing and concentrate on what we agree on. I believe the Green Brigade is sensitive to the feelings of the wider Celtic Support, I have no doubt that influential figures in the Green Brigade both post & lurk on this site. This is an important Celtic website, we should start the ball rolling by sending out a clear message that we don’t want anyone to bring any type of firework or smoke bomb to a Celtic game and just leave it at that. If we start the old political debate we will just muddy the water and end up sending mixed messages. I think the match day spectators will also have to make their feelings known whenever a device is set off at a game.

  22. Paul67 et al

“There is no such thing as bad publicity!” That seems to be the mantra of the Green Brigade. Let me spell it out to any members who might be lurking. Any combination of terracing rake, fireworks, moshing, and smashed up hard plastic seats is lethal, and, could quite conceivably be fatal. One slip, one fall, could lead to tragedy. I am not talking about taking a bottle of water into Celtic Park, I am talking about deliberate and premeditate acts that put the health and safety of our fellow supporters, young and old, at risk. At risk!

Nobody has contributed to the atmosphere at Parkhead more than you in recent times, but do not kid yourself that that contribution is in some way unique in Celtic’s history, it is not, though the fireworks may well be. Time to ask yourselves, yet again, the question asked of every aspiring revolutionary…

Do you want to be in the vanguard,……… or the guards van?

sorry pal that’s total bollox! they were set off in section 111, and the fact around a dozen coppers and stewards ran up boths sides of them backs that up, if it was not the GB who was it? as you seem to know.

  26. There’s a fair deal of hypocrisy from Celtic on this. No flares or yer out, but guess what, all our marketing for the new season will be images shrouded in green smoke.

Celtic stamp all over use of the Celtic crest but sell T-Shirts in their thousands with Green Brigade slogans and creations. You just can’t get enough, you know.

“We decided to ban them, but relented”. The old ‘hawd me back’ cry of the fake bully.

Celtic make an absolute fortune in marketing off the back of the Green Brigade but it’s a dirty secret.

Celtic is a club open to all. To get 60,000 people turning up you’ll have a cross section of all of society and that’s always been the case. Fat cats, middle class, the working man, unemployed, neds. I get the impression a cleansing is what some folk are after. No riff raff please, we’ve a squeaky clean corporate image to preserve.

To get kids going the parent in amongst all that cross section needs to have a reason and enthusiasm that gets the kid coming back. Kids have more options than ever before and like it or not the Green Brigade and the atmosphere has become one of the few hooks the club has that means they spend their Saturday at Celtic Park and pocket money in the Celtic Shop or on an £8(!) crappy hot dog meal ‘deal’.

I’ve some concerns over the GB too, but this ‘get them out’ crap is superior bull.

To be honest if there’s any more bangers I’m going to boo. Nothing to do with health and safety, it’s just a complete pain in the ass and a complete distraction from the football, and offers nothing in support for the team. The Flares don’t bother me but again, happy for the club to pursue those who use them if it’s an issue for the Club, absolutely. Banning the section en masse is snobbery run riot.

As for the GB, all this jumping on top of each other and taking their tops off all seems to point to sexual identity issues and that’s an internal issue for them.

As like the old days, you pick your section of the ground. 111 is not for me, but they’re Celtic Supporters and the team draw a lot of backing from them. Celtic is not unique in having Ultras, we’re actually quite late entrants. We’d survive without them, they are not immune to crtiticism or censure, but the agenda to end them was not born in the Celtic Board room and be careful lending your support to that agenda.

No unemployed please, you should be out looking for a job. And do we really need the over 60s?

In relation to the GB issue…fair is fair, and the club have been more than fair with them recently.

Thankfully, both parties seems to have settled on some kind of an agreement.

We need the GB,their support is will be vital during this next European home game.

As you are aware, I have praised the GB for their unstinting support of Celtic and atmosphere etc they bring. Indeed CP would be a poorer place if they were not there. However!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is not the rest of the Celtic support setting the divisive political agenda; It is the GB as stated on their website. We by the definition of Celtic are non sectarian, anti racist and non political.

As you say there will be luckers / posters here so I say . Cut out the politics and concentrate on supporting Celtic in a way befitting of a great institution. Why do you need a political agenda to support Celtic ? This very fact is disturbing and arouses suspicion that there is an underlying motive.

I stand corrected the GB are bad bad bhoys and those paragons of virtue the denizens of the Jungle never caused a single problem never san any songs remotely connected to Ireland or indeed caused any single affray that would cause a member of the board any concern

I agree the fireworks have to stop ……but get a grip the ground is like a morgue at times and the GB are adding spectacle ….but they don’t think the corporate way so the knives are out.
