Not time for Griffiths to move

873

The general reaction to reports that a £1m bid has been received for Leigh Griffiths is that the figure undervalues the player.  Early in the season the story was different.  Leigh, who joined in January last year, was behind new arrivals John Guidetti and Stefan Scepovic.  His perceived value was close to zero, alongside most players sitting on the bench or in the stand.

We were panicked on 31 August last year.  Having signed Amido Balde and Teemu Pucki a year earlier we were desperately short of a striker, the arrival of Scepovic, then Guidetti was cause for celebration.  Neither brought much to the club, we would have been better, with more money available for the next window, if we’d prioritised Leigh and given chances to a youth player.

If Celtic choose to sell Leigh this summer, it will not be for £1m.  He’s worth much more than that, probably more than Leeds United can afford.  He’s under contract, first choice and scoring goals.  But Celtic will also put a great deal of effort into recruiting a striker in the coming weeks.

There are no guarantees Leigh will get an extended run in the team next season.  Celtic should sell players at peak value, when they have reached the point they are no longer developing, before they become an overhang on resources.  Leigh is probably at peak value, and unlikely to further develop, but he’s no overhang.  That scenario won’t happen until a couple of new pretenders have proven they are better fits than Balde, Pukki, Scepovic and Guidetti.

Keep an eye on Frank McGarvey’s 1985 Scottish Cup Final shirt, which is being auctioned to benefit Maryhill Food Bank.  It closes just before 8pm tonight.

Hola ya nest of vipers ye. I jest. Peter has cancelled the crazy world tour and told him he doesn’t need to sell anyone he wants to keep. For a club accused of penny pinching I think both those things are a great sign of backing do you not? Pete missing out on Vvd 10m ➕ 3m to get beat around the globe.

It doesn’t matter how many lawyers Celtic throw at it, the OB act is, as its name suggests, an Act of Parliament.

Of course it is an insidious act and needs to be challenged, but Celtic FC is not above the law and, like the rest of us, can only voice their opposition, which Celtic have done, and lobby for change, which is what the petition is doing

Thankfully, money and the ability to hire the top “legal eagles” doesn’t change Acts of Parliament, otherwise what would stop the Orange Order from abolishing Catholic schools?

It’s an act of parliment but, the rail leads back to the ‘Shame-game’ and, Celtic FC’s meek acceptance of….the blame!

Had Celtic FC done what I suggested at the time and, called their own media conference…national media only…no SMSM welcome…like MO’N had to do in the Nou Camp when, he tried to tell the world what type of place…nice little Scotland really is…well, for me…Celtic’s hierarchy bottled-it BIG TIME.

The genie would have been out of the bottle before this bill was passed in parliment.

    Well said.

Also, Ronny earlier said he wanted new signings in prior to the CL qualifiers and confirmed that the board had told him they will back him on that.

It is on record that Deila, Collins and Lawwell met up with Boyata a few days ago in an effort to lure him to the club.

Obviously there may well be one or more signings on the final day of the transfer window in addition to players brought in earlier, but many targets don’t become available until the final hours of the window.

I am pretty sure that without the need to issue threats, the board know that Ronny would walk if they refused to back him on reasonable requests for support.

Striker wise they can all go apart from Griffindor. Also Specovic isn’t making the bench or he never gets off it. Not the mark of a 2m signing. Panic buy? Who knows. He can go.

So we need at least 2 new strikers. The 4 going should see us bring in quality over quantity.

Gers skipper Lee Wallace grabbed an equaliser on the hour to cancel out Derek Lyle’s first-half opener as Gers battled to a 1-1 draw.

Rangers fans’ group, the Union Bears, delivered a letter to McCall before the game against Queens highlighting just what a victory in the play-offs would mean to supporters.

But he was so impressed he decided to save it for the first leg against Hibs.

McCall said: “I’m leaving it for Wednesday night. It’s a fantastic letter.

“The basis was that today was a must-win but it wasn’t. I’m not saying Wednesday is but there’s a lot of good stuff in it and I’d already done what I thought was right for the players against Queens.

“Listen, it’s a fans’ perspective and we know how they’re feeling. Hopefully, we’ve sent them home happy and they’ll be back on Wednesday with their voices ready to go.

“We’ve proved a lot of people wrong. Many would have been looking at us at half-time, a goal down, and thinking: ‘Oh, Rangers have bottled it again.’

I have listened to a lot of Russians, some from the Ukraine, about the whole mess. General consensus, if that is possible to discern (!), is that Crimea was/is Russian but it was taken back in the wrong way. I met separatists and their supporters as well as some friends who feel Russia must also be accountable.

Overall observation I could glean was that it is hurting many and it bewilders them that the two are fighting. The Soviet generation, especially, cannot comprehend that their people are fighting one another and that fascists are being helped in the battle.

When The USSR broke up,the obvious solution to a definite problem was to have The Crimea as a quasi-autonomous region of Russia, but allowing Ukrainian access.

The Crimea was not historically part of Ukraine,as you know. It became so while both were part of The USSR.

    Unintended consequences.

And as a result,Ukraine has lost parts of its own territory.

I agree with you regarding the so-called ‘shame game’.

When you go onto YouTube and watch the highlights, you cannot help but think – how the hell were Celtic pulled up for this? – until you see Neil Lennon react to the rat McCoist.

Now let me be very clear. I am not criticising Lenny here. I have no idea what McCoist said to him, so will not judge him either way.

All I will say is I really wish Neil had bitten his tongue and confronted the man out of the public gaze. Regardless of the justification for it, Lenny’s actions let Rangers off the hook.

They had deployed rough-house tactics; physically abused the referee on more than one occasion; had a player who left the field to remonstrate with Lennon and had 3 players red-carded. Celtic were in the clear and Rangers were the bad guys . . . Until Neil Lennon lost his cool.

Again I emphasise, I am not condemning the guy. As I say, I don’t know what words provoked it. I merely state that it threw Rangers and the SFA and the SMSM a lifeline. A get out of jail card. Both clubs were now in the shit.

In that one moment, Lenny’s actions took the moral high ground away from Celtic and opened the door to what followed.

How could Celtic now claim to be the innocent party? How could they tell Holyrood to take a hike?

I make no apology for repeating that I don’t blame or condemn Lennon. As I have said, it is more about wishing he had bit his tongue and saved it for later, away from the worldwide TV audience.

As news worthiness goes, having 3 players red-carded pales into insignificance when compared with a manager aggressively confronting his opposite number at the end of the game. I know because I was in Australia at the time and saw the TV reports and read the newspaper headlines.
