Not time for Griffiths to move

873

The general reaction to reports that a £1m bid has been received for Leigh Griffiths is that the figure undervalues the player.  Early in the season the story was different.  Leigh, who joined in January last year, was behind new arrivals John Guidetti and Stefan Scepovic.  His perceived value was close to zero, alongside most players sitting on the bench or in the stand.

We were panicked on 31 August last year.  Having signed Amido Balde and Teemu Pucki a year earlier we were desperately short of a striker, the arrival of Scepovic, then Guidetti was cause for celebration.  Neither brought much to the club, we would have been better, with more money available for the next window, if we’d prioritised Leigh and given chances to a youth player.

If Celtic choose to sell Leigh this summer, it will not be for £1m.  He’s worth much more than that, probably more than Leeds United can afford.  He’s under contract, first choice and scoring goals.  But Celtic will also put a great deal of effort into recruiting a striker in the coming weeks.

There are no guarantees Leigh will get an extended run in the team next season.  Celtic should sell players at peak value, when they have reached the point they are no longer developing, before they become an overhang on resources.  Leigh is probably at peak value, and unlikely to further develop, but he’s no overhang.  That scenario won’t happen until a couple of new pretenders have proven they are better fits than Balde, Pukki, Scepovic and Guidetti.

Keep an eye on Frank McGarvey’s 1985 Scottish Cup Final shirt, which is being auctioned to benefit Maryhill Food Bank.  It closes just before 8pm tonight.

I’m not convinced by Ciftci to be honest. But he could play a Sutton-like role for us.

Whit, suntan lotion and everything? Lilos, beachtowels and everything?

    New players and everything?

Tbh we canny be any worse prepared than we were the last two seasons. I’ll take any improvement.

    Neither am I.

See no point in either. Henderson will do the cover job for Brown and if we are going to buy a striker I would hope he would be better quality than Cifti. Best striker in the league this season was Rooney. If a player from the premiership who would be signed as a striker is being brought in I would rather have Rooney.

  11. What are Police Scotland up to exactly?

As we know the Govt pass criminal law and it’s up to Police Scotland to implement those laws. Some laws are deeply flawed from the outset and others are not but ultimately the lawmakers don’t control what’s happening on the ground.

Now we all know that the Police are being particularly heavy handed with OBFA.

What about the removal of the license of the Arches? There’s a post on the petition about that decision from a “specialist nightclub medical provider” that has been working there. He states that because of their presence and the well trained security that it’s probably the safest environment where anybody could have a “misadventure”. Now those kids (as that’s what they mostly are) will be spread out among other venues many of which make no attempt whatsoever at caring for their clients.

Certainly it seems that Police Scotland left the licensing board with little option but to take the decision they have.

This is yet another of many issues the Govt are going to have to deal with over the next 12 months because several unconnected groups are questioning the draconian way that the laws are being implemented and this is either being done with or against Govt wishes.

  12. Police Scotland are a joke, but a very dangerous animal, I doubt if this government can control them, and I’m being honest, they are a law Antonio them selves and care not a jot who sais what, House would be a top man in North Korea.

Certain elements within Police Scotland seem intent on making law rather than enforcing it.

There are numerous examples. None of them good.

I was out for a drink with a few mates on Friday, one of whom is a copper. His response would be that this goes all the way to Mr. House at the top. Now a lot of people would answer that “he would say that , wouldn’t he?” but he gave me a number of examples of the kind of control freakery that can only come from soemone with an inflated sense of their own importance. Officers carrying firearms while nipping into Waitrose is another example. It appears Mr. House has carte blanche to do as he pleases and ignore any oversight from government. Not a good situation.

Sadly, that is pretty much my understanding too. Pretty sure a disaffected officer sent a very heavily researched dossier on House to his bosses a few years back.

Nothing came of it,it was buried without investigation due to its source.

I’d be very surprised if it didn’t contain enough proof to damn him but he is bullet-proof.

There are a lot of people who once thought they were bullet-proof. And weren’t. Hopefully he will be another one.
