Odsonne and breaking the €10m barrier

320

Odsonne Edouard, who turned 20 in January, is at the pivotal season of his career.  He scored lots of goals at youth level but was heading nowhere at PSG before Brendan Rodgers made the trip to Paris to encourage him to come to Glasgow.

His stats until that point were meagre: one goal in 16 appearances on loan at Toulouse, but Celtic scouted him thoroughly and all were convinced of his potential.  After settling into life in Glasgow, he is beginning to fulfil some of that potential, Sunday’s winning goal being the clearest example.

In only two months Brendan will decide whether to spend €10m on him or let him return to PSG.  For Celtic, this is a serious gamble, but I expect them to take it.

The club have money to spend right now, but being able to spend it as effectively as you would like is another story.  €10m on a striker guarantees you nothing, not even a resale value.  Then consider the contract a €10m striker would want.  The club know well how difficult it is to sign anyone who has clearly demonstrated they are ready to take on the Champions League.  To improve players at this level, we need to graduate them through the final phase of their development here.

If we are to break the €10m barrier, and I think we should, we need to be sure we can improve him and that he has the right attitude to the game.  If Brendan is convinced on these questions, Celtic will exercise their option and sign him on a permanent deal. But even after a year’s trial, it is a huge gamble.

Agree we should sell a few midfielders, but No way can we sell Koussi, he’s the obvious replacement for Broony and a great second cover when we are up against it. Frankly,(pelters expected) I’d be inclined to sell Armstrong.

Also feel we should get Odsonne for around £6 million which is about what we’d get fro Armstrong.

  2. Go tell the Spartim on

we’ll get money for jozo and boyata, that will go towards one CB, so we need to find the money (no laughing at the back) for OE, another CB and RB, im sure we’ve got that covered.

Expect to see Gamboa, Svietchenko, DDV (if we sign Bain) and Armstrong all depart, id imagine we wouldnt need to dip in too far to our “heated driveway/hotel/cafe” fund

  3. Has our manager not said that Kouassi is seen as Broonie’s replacement? So, he won’t be going. If we are to sell a midfielder, it looks like Armstrong to me (and I’m a fan). But please, no McGinn.

    SFTB,

    from earlier.

Please dont take anything I type seriously as Im off work right now and just trying to have a wee bit of banter. And the blog has become very complacent ;)

Last nights posts about “TG49QS” were clearly a wind up. Just messing.

    Howeva,,,,

Ive been logging on daily again for maybe 2 weeks now,,and “TG49QS” certainly feels to me like its brought up everyday by you know who ;)

And if I find that the record is stuck and no body else is getting up to change it then I tend to.

So,,I for one dont wanna listen to it for the rest of my days , I dont.. Honestly.

Like I say it felt like everyday, and then I discovered Vfr had wrote an article in 2016, and when I read that article he was “bitching” about it then.also,, I mean,,good Lord!

If allowed “TG49QS” will go from being flung out daily,,to spawning a cult somewhere that gets KJ tattooed 49 times on their back,, or something like that.

Ive gave my solution whats yours? ;)

Hope youre well, please unlease your pen more often. I , for one , would enjoy it.

You might be interested in the following.

A fella whose words I try to always listen to said to me, and im summarizing,,

“Mahe you keep saying if the report is a whitewash youre out ,but its not the report its the actions of the PLC board that you should be concerned with”

That was a few hours ago and Ive pondered it since and Im actually more convinced than ever that hes wrong.

Let me explain the rationale behind my conviction.

Now this might not apply to every one but it should especially resonate with the Scotland based supporters of the primary business of the Celtic family.

Hundreds of years ago your ancestors , praise the good Lord, made it off boats and onto dry land to find a better life.

Then they were called , and considered, Fenian ba#@$^ds. (or words to that effect, Irish whatever etc etc, choose any one of them actually, it doesnt matter) and discriminated against.

And since then, that has not ended.

Hundreds of years later,, .the spawn of that migration has became more affluent than ever,, more educated than ever,, better looking than ever in my case ;),, more worldwide than ever, and have became masters of two of mankinds most powerful tools.

    Words and Technology.

Yet by daring to hand you a whitewashed ( should it be) report Scotland would effectively say to you, it will continue!

To me,,should that happen,,thats what is being said. Its going on !

    Can anyone convince me otherwise?

Im right here for another few days anyway.

In that instance I really , really dont care what the current custodians of the primary branch of the Celtic family do.

That stance has nothing to do with football. Thats peoples rights. Thats a government and social issue,,not sporting.

Football would have become the vehicle of oppression in that instance.

Those within the boardroom of the primary business of the Celtic family would be victims,,just like us all,,and would honestly have a right to look to others in positions of governmental authority . I think.

YOU (whoever you are) might argue “they allowed themselves and by extension us to become victim”.

Thats a different argument for another day. For me anyway.

A people will have just been told ,,in a sly and sleekit way and couched in business terms,, but told none the less,,nah actually,,we gonna keep you down.

Its not leaders of a football club that should be stepping up here ,,even regardless of who that club is,,its the leaders of people.

The leaders of the primary business are more than welcome to join and assist in the struggle by all means. And I believe you have great means so please do. Infact I expect your aid.

But is it fair to leave it to them? Honest question? The Scotland based supporters of the families primary business,,their rights ,,

very important rights like stopping the gathering of those who would sing ILLEGAL songs about us,,

and more importantly in my opinion halting those who wish harm upon us and our kin,,

hinge on a couple of fellas,,one who loves golf more and one whose been busy making sure he learns French so he can tie down all these young hotshots cheaper ;) ?

Shouldnt be hinging on those two. No?

    Wheres the politicians?

    Where those you voted for?

Is there a focal point for this struggle that surely looks imminent? If not , why not ?

Who are you leaders? And not the club remember,,

I have found myself thinking forget the leatherchase and their leaders,,focus on the off the field battle,, and when alls said and done, should the game still be going,, im looking forward to settling back down, among the family, to put my feet up and enjoy the sport again finally.

The focus on the leatherchase has left the supporters of the primary branch blinded imo.

Its an old trick,,like the magician,,has you looking at one hand while secretly its the other one thats actually in play.

    Shows over bhoys,,wakey wakey !

Ill make a fookin army out of ya if it kills me ;)

A message from Mahe to the Leatherchasers.

    Hail Hail

Brendan has full control of his Budget. If he wants to sign Edouard he can sign him. He is given a Budget for fees and a budget for wages and is allowed to bring money forward from the next window or indeed to defer money.

I would think we had deferred some from January 18 window.

However, if we need another Centre Half, Midfielder or Winger then that is also up to him

I suspect if Dembele were to leave then Edouard would likely be signed.

However, we do have a large squad and need to reduce that. 28 players plus 7 on loan. Roberts, Bain, Musonda and Eduoard are incoming loans.

No way back for Cifci, Allan, Benyu or Sviachenko but Hazard, Christie and Lewis Morgan are all back

So we have 24 permanent signed, 3 back from Loan and Musonda has another year. So we are back up to 28. Brendan has stated he wants 25.

Hard to argue with any of that mhate. So I won’t!

The only caveat I might offer is that the sheer number of games we need to play due to CL qualifications – 11 months out of 12 – may mean BR might reconsider if what constitutes an ideal size of squad for the Scottish champions compared to a top English side?

You could be right and Brendan may have underestimated the numbers. When we look at the injuries which we had this year at one time 11 players out. I was astonished to see that Kieran Tierney had played more games than anyone in Europe.

A consideration maybe that we have up to 4 rounds of qualification for Champions League before the end of the summer window and Dembele will kept until then.

It is a juggling act which Brendan has to do as its rumoured he is looking for 3 players for every position with some players covering 2 or 3 positions. Calum McGregor often plays in different positions. Last season we had 4 goalkeepers and 2 left with young Hazard coming in as No3. No sooner than we had agreed to loan him to Falkirk than we lost the top 2 keepers to Injury and an emergency Loan for Scott Bain is required. As is stood we had 2 keepers in the squad for Ibrox who had never played for the first team.

In light of the above, I think Brendan has in his comments under estimated the squad size which he needs.

  13. Fit & Proper ? Not yet hmmm

Rangers director Alastair Johnston has been serving as a member of the club’s board for nine months but has yet to be approved as a “fit and proper person” by the Scottish FA.

The businessman returned to Ibrox last year to take a seat on the board and was present at the club’s AGM in November.

However, the position has not yet been rubber-stamped by the authorities at Hampden, with an investigation into the UEFA licensing process holding up a decision.

Companies House documents show Johnston was appointed as a director on June 12, 2017 and a document from November last year states he holds a position that “has the right to exercise, or actually exercises, significant influence or control over the company”.

Johnston’s past as a member of the Rangers oldco board has led to his application being put on hold by the governing body, pending the outcome of an investigation into the Scottish FA’s handling of Rangers’ UEFA licence application in 2011.

The US-based Scot was appointed as chairman of Rangers on August 29, 2009 and was removed from his position on May 24, 2011, following Craig Whyte’s takeover. He had already criticised Whyte and said he would stand down at the end of the season.

Johnston was chairman when the club applied to participate in UEFA competition that year but there are questions surrounding Rangers’ tax obligations at that time and what was declared on their licence application.

UEFA rules state clubs applying to play in Europe should have “no payables overdue” to tax authorities, but do allow applications to progress if amounts are in dispute.

Rangers said at the time of their application in 2011 they had no overdue payables but that they were in dispute with HMRC over their liability from a Discounted Option Scheme, known as “the Wee Tax Case”, which was in use from 2000 to 2002.

However, in court testimony given during the Craig Whyte trial, Rangers and Murray Group directors stated the club knew the tax bill was overdue in November 2010, months before their UEFA licence application.

Following the court case, the Scottish FA took legal advice from a QC before referring the matter to their compliance officer to investigate whether the governing body had acted correctly when processing the licence application.

Former Scottish FA chief executive Stewart Regan noted in a letter to clubs, informing them of the investigation: “There seem to be contradictions between those [court] statements and written representations made by oldco at the time of the licence application and during the monitoring period”.

Johnston is the third person to join the Rangers board who had been a director at Ibrox before the financial collapse at Ibrox in 2012.

Paul Murray was a director from 2007 until May 2011, leaving the club after Craig Whyte’s takeover was complete. His status as a “fit and proper” person was approved by the Scottish FA ‘ Professional Game Board”.

Rangers chairman Dave King became a non-executive director of the oldco in 2000 after becoming an investor in the club but ended his association in 2012.

Following the takeover of the newco in 2015, King became chairman of the club after being approved by the full board of the Scottish FA, who said that the decision had been made after “unprecedented” due diligence and after it “sought and received specialist independent legal advice, both in Scotland and South Africa, in respect of Mr King’s conviction further to the South African Income Tax Act and in relation to his previous involvement as a director of the club.”
