On signing from domestic rivals

816

There are limits to how far we can recruit from our domestic market and continue to prosper.  Martin O’Neill preferred to sign players his teams had faced, which meant Hibs and St Johnstone being plundered, eventually leading to decline.  Gordon Strachan enjoyed watching Hibs all his life; it showed in his Celtic signings.

Rumour has it when Jock Stein signed Willie Wallace from Hearts in 1966 his timing was determined by the need to deny a rival Wallace’ signature.  Neil Lennon should find it easy to compete with the likes of Derby County, if he is motivated to do so.

Enjoy the fantastic clips of Willie Wallace below from the 1960s.  You’ll have seen many before but the clip of him beating three Celtic defenders before scoring was new to me.  It might have been the goal which convinced Jock to move.

The whole coefficient thing is ill conceived ….

Equating CL wins with EL wins is nonsense …just for starters

While I think you are a wee bit overly critical of Stokes, I agree totally with the rest of what you write. For me, Hooper and Wanyama are worth their weight in gold.

  7. BT,

keep the chin up mate, it will pass in no time. Sounds like you have a lot of support, so keep smiling just a minor setback, just more time to spend with the dumbbells :)

Just back from the physiotherapist myself still a ways away, I can see the light though.

Martin Samuel (Mail) has been hammering on UEFA’s door for a few years now about the inequality of coefficients.

He used Arsenal as one of his examples – not won the league in 10 years compared to other clubs who have won their league on 4/5/6 occasions but get ranked lower.

Spurs are a good example – won zilch in Europe and EPL since the 60’s but enjoy a high coefficient thanks to the national percentage gained from; 4 x CL slots and 3/4 Europa slots.

Our final figure was dragged down thanks to the 3 other SPL teams only earning 1.5 points 2012-13.

Hottest day of the year so far, 37 deg, only going to get hotter.

I see the Milwall fans are no happy with Lomas as their new manager, some of their posts are worse than the huns on RM.

SSN saying we have inquired about Dexter Blackstock…..who makes up this pish ? Dearie me.

I suppose you pays your money and you makes your choices I must say I prefer Stokes to Hooper I feel he is more skill full and contributes more to the team. There is no way of knowing but I feel had Stokes not been injured for a fair part of last season he would have scored a similar amount of goals to Hooper also Stokes can set up goals for others something Hooper doesnt often do.H.H.

    Millwall

watch a docu on them a while back called the dockers, their original nickname. As far as the bloo axis of evil is concerned they should be the london wing not chelsea. What an odious bunch of followers they have. The den been closed down on umpteen occasions due to crowd trouble, pitch invasions and the like. Usually.when they were getting turned over. It struck me that if the sfa had treated the bosch in the same way the efa treated millwall back in the day the scottish football landscape would look a lot different.
