On signing from domestic rivals

816

There are limits to how far we can recruit from our domestic market and continue to prosper.  Martin O’Neill preferred to sign players his teams had faced, which meant Hibs and St Johnstone being plundered, eventually leading to decline.  Gordon Strachan enjoyed watching Hibs all his life; it showed in his Celtic signings.

Rumour has it when Jock Stein signed Willie Wallace from Hearts in 1966 his timing was determined by the need to deny a rival Wallace’ signature.  Neil Lennon should find it easy to compete with the likes of Derby County, if he is motivated to do so.

Enjoy the fantastic clips of Willie Wallace below from the 1960s.  You’ll have seen many before but the clip of him beating three Celtic defenders before scoring was new to me.  It might have been the goal which convinced Jock to move.

Martin Samuel has had a pop at Platini on a regular basis about the G14 influence and the ‘big’ 3 (or 5 if you include Germany and France).

There was a theory put forward based on League placings – i.e. same coefficient format but and added points formulae where a Country’s League Winner gets +5 points and maintains those points if they win their League the following year. If they drop to 3rd = +3 points – drop out the top 5 = 0 points etc etc. The ‘big’ clubs vetoed it.

    Compare and contrast based on past 5 years – Celtic 2×5 (titles) + 2×4 (2nd) = 22 divided by 5 = +4.4pts added to our coefficient. Arsenal 1x3rd + 4x4th = 11 divided by 5 = +2.2pts added to their coefficient.

What the ‘big’ 3 (or 5) were worried about was that the lesser nations getting higher coefficients (across the board) would result in their leagues losing a European place – and horror of horrors – the loss of a CL place.

If Celtic (fingers crossed) were to make the CL last 16 for the next 4 years (including winning the SPL) – we would still be ranked below the top 5 nations. In fact it would be highly unlikely we would even make Pot1.

  3. Evening All,

Does anyone know if Willie Wallace will be signing books in Celtics Dublin store in the next couple of weeks? I’ll be back home on 18th so would love the opportunity to go meet the man and get a copy of his book signed. What a piece of treasure that would be!

    Hail Hail

I wouldn’t think that would be a problem, you’ll meet plenty of CQNers over the course of the day,BT.PFayr. And me, will be there from around midday.

If Celtic were after Johnny Russell then why would we splashed on out Lassad and taken a look at Micu. Has JR’s improved so much in the last 6 months?

I suspect JR will find a level in the English Championship ….

The MSM headlines will go as follows:

    – Celtic in for Russell

    – Dundee Utd demand x millions

    – More competition for Russell

    – Rumours that Celtic will only go to x- y millions for Russell

    – Variations repeated ad nauseam until JR is sold or story goes away

    – JR sold

    – Celtic let Scottish Superstar slip through their fingers because they are cost cutting because Rangers are not in the SPL

Despite going into liquidation, if you had been told by the powers that be that they would help shoe horn you into the top division, why would you bother changing your business model.

Sevco still spending money they don’t have on players they don’t need.

Clearly setting their stall out to make an impression in the cups next season, to please the hordes and to reassure the previously mentioned powers that be.

Cliche I know but it is a self-fulfilling prophecy. The equivalence of EL results with CL results is ridiculous. I had a quick look at the rules and noticed that clubs also receive 20% of their national association’s coefficiency, (if I read it correctly), which given Scotland’s against say Croatia would benefit their representatives. And obviously the Spurs and Arsenals of this world.

Willie wont make it over to Ireland unfortunately. If you want a personal message signed by Willie order the book from CQN then email the message for my attention to celticquicknews@gmail.com and I’ll sort.

Willie is in England visiting friends at the moment and is back next week for the last signing session for CQN at the Celtic store in Argyle Street on Thursday evening (13 June) 5.30-7.30pm before we head down to Greenock for a VERY SPECIAL night…

Hope everyone enjoyed the video of Willie’s goals that Paul posted today.

  12. According to the Polish press, Aleksandar Tonev had medicals in Birmingham today. O hope Villa did not find wrong in tests.

Spot on – it’s about trying to win a cup. Even with that manager they should stroll through that division. It’s pure ego – a sense of entitlement. Haven’t learned a thing.

Wonderful to see that compilation of Willie Wallace’ goals. Was one against the deid team at Celtic Park, when we won 3-1 in the League Cup, scoring all the goals in the last 10 minutes, just after Kai missed a penalty for them. Great, great night in the Hayshed.

*A memory that still lives with me, Big Jock rated this as his favourite victory over them. This was a winner take all game as we had tied with them 1-1 in the away sectional game.

A huge crown was warned before the game that banners and flags would not be tolerated. I was in the Jungle that night close tae the halfway line and their end was awash with them, wee dutch horse’s hoof banners, butcher’s aprons and even a French flag which had a goatshaggin symbol in the centre of it, no action was taken while at the Celtic end one tricolour was unfurled cue for a massive police intervention.

The Jungle at that broke intae a huge chant of “you can stick yer orange banners up yer a**se”.

What was surprising was both teams faced their own support in the first half, they took an early lead from a suspicious “bunion” offside goal while we had a goal and penalty turned down.

They then had a legit penalty given in the 2nd half, their big hero from the ’66 final replay ( kai yai yippee the Pope’s an effin hippy) stepped up tae take it.

Punters were actually trying tae leave as they thought it was all over, that night the Jungle closed ranks, naebody was leaving.

Wallop aff the underside of the crossbar, bounced off the goal line and spun up intae the air, the dane actually pushed andy penman, who was lining up for the rebound, oot the way and jumped up tae heid it, not only was this not allowed but his heidy was saft, if penman had been allowed tae hit it the ball and the net would have ended up at brigton cross.

Bobby Murdoch caught it and put it down for a free kick for us, johansen stated later that he didnae try tae heider it but was jumping for joy as he was sure the ball had crossed the line when the rebound hit off his head, utter Raphael.

We went right up the park and rattled 3 past their other Danish player, first wee Wispy bundled him and the ball over the line fae a corner, next Bobby Murdoch slammed one past him after his free kick rebounded off one of them and to cap a great night in the last minute the buzz bomb rounded a despairing hun goalie tae walk the ball intae an empty net, all of this happened in the final 12 minutes.

However, the best tackle of the night occurred when a numptie ran fae the hun end, grabbed one of the corner flags and made a bee line for wee Lemon, left back provan of the huns saw him coming and body checked him omtae the dirt track.

Oh aye and we had 2 of our youth players who had leanings toward them in the stand that night, when one of them cheered an early move fae us the other said “your no supporting them are you”. To which the other replied “we play for them now”.
