On signing from domestic rivals

816

There are limits to how far we can recruit from our domestic market and continue to prosper.  Martin O’Neill preferred to sign players his teams had faced, which meant Hibs and St Johnstone being plundered, eventually leading to decline.  Gordon Strachan enjoyed watching Hibs all his life; it showed in his Celtic signings.

Rumour has it when Jock Stein signed Willie Wallace from Hearts in 1966 his timing was determined by the need to deny a rival Wallace’ signature.  Neil Lennon should find it easy to compete with the likes of Derby County, if he is motivated to do so.

Enjoy the fantastic clips of Willie Wallace below from the 1960s.  You’ll have seen many before but the clip of him beating three Celtic defenders before scoring was new to me.  It might have been the goal which convinced Jock to move.

That’s him – can’t remember the details. Think he went to them from the minis and then ended up back at the minis.

  3. True, Paul.

Ideally I’m hoping for 2 decent journeymen with something extra promising from Scotland, 2 hungry, youthful, upward-ambitious quality lads from the English Championship/Lge1, and a couple of foreign gambles with some je ne sais quois silkiness/’continental’ technique…

All before July hits with the season-breaking qualifiers.

    Not too much to ask…

Great game on Sky Sports just now……Holland v Germany (U21)

  15. @AgentScotland: Stokes contract: Player wants a 4 year deal, club offer 2 years with the option of giving him a 3rd year, player feels not enough security

    ===============================================

Ridiculous. There are many many players of Stokesy’s ability level who would sacrifice their grannies to get a 2-year well-paid contract at a CL-competeing club. If that’s true, he’s playing a silly game.

Re: Johnny Russell. If Celtic want him, they’ll get him. If Lenny chooses not to bag him, then we’ll all have to move on. One SPL diamond isn’t worth the fretting when there’s more Victor Wanyamas out there waiting to be discovered.

    ‘Wanyama Who Akbar!’.

Reading back i see some poster asking if uefa co-efficient includes domestic results/ form

    NO

While this years mark is very positive, remember overall ranking is based on 5-year cycle and this years mark unfortunately replaces the 2007-8 season where we also made the CL last-16.

So in effect we are little, if any, better off.

Remember that, in European terms, we have bad some poor seasons in the last 5 – very poor performance in CL finishing bottom to Aalborg after automatic group qualification, elimination to Braga/Utrecht in EL qualifying, and although we found a bit of form in 2011-2 EL section we only won 1 match in 6. Another thing is that qualifying rounds only count as half points for coefficient purposes.

We need at least another good CL run to make real progress up the co-efficient charts and get back into pot 3.

I think it is fundamentally unfair that UEFA award the same coefficient marks for both CL and EL – surely it is harder to win CL last 16 tie than a EL last 16.
