On signing from domestic rivals

816

There are limits to how far we can recruit from our domestic market and continue to prosper.  Martin O’Neill preferred to sign players his teams had faced, which meant Hibs and St Johnstone being plundered, eventually leading to decline.  Gordon Strachan enjoyed watching Hibs all his life; it showed in his Celtic signings.

Rumour has it when Jock Stein signed Willie Wallace from Hearts in 1966 his timing was determined by the need to deny a rival Wallace’ signature.  Neil Lennon should find it easy to compete with the likes of Derby County, if he is motivated to do so.

Enjoy the fantastic clips of Willie Wallace below from the 1960s.  You’ll have seen many before but the clip of him beating three Celtic defenders before scoring was new to me.  It might have been the goal which convinced Jock to move.

  1. The Moon Boys, I think I started posting on here circa 2008, long time lurker particularly of the live match updates. My favourite Poster then was Kojo. Particularly intrigued with his style and thought his match analysis was excellent. However when I became a regular and the topics changed into the social & political arena, I soon saw another side of the “lovable” Kojo. The charm of his writing style quickly wore off and simply became annoying. If its a quiet day on the blog, and the talk is about Football I do read his stuff if its busy or the talk is political, I tend to scroll on by.

  2. St Stives,

Even better, the polis that kept moving him in the middle of the night every time a Hun farted were obviously on the ball eh ?

One of the biggest security operations in their lives and they missed the wacky backy growing in the yard, or did they.

  3. Shakhtar show how to work the transfer market.

Sell Fernandinho to Man City for £30m and buy his replacement Wellington Nem from Fluminense for £7.5m.

Easy this transfer wheeling + dealing eh?

Just looking at the income and the tax for the two The Rangers players the amount the taxman takes is shocking.Has no one told them about EBTs ? it could save a fortune and allow them to sign better players mind you it wouldnt make there team better than any other team as competition in Scotland is fierce. H.H.

    4 years for Tony Stokes?

    Seems a bit severe.

I’d let him off with an admonishment and send him on his way.

  7. Wonderful to see that compilation of Willie Wallace’ goals. Was one against the deid team at Celtic Park, when we won 3-1 in the League Cup, scoring all the goals in the last 10 minutes, just after Kai missed a penalty for them. Great, great night in the Hayshed.

Gordon J. I am sorry to say whatever Charlotte turns up the establishment will ignore it the MSM continue to put there spin on it just this Morning talking about a new investor who is buying Charles Greens shares. We read of how many new players they are signing and others they are looking at.They have no shame there is and will be no contrition from them.I think we have to concentrate our energies on Celtic and make them us as strong as possible before they return to the SPL which will be celebrated by them as the peepil are back in there rightfull place.H.H.

Does anyone know when sevco’s audited accounts are due..?…if it’s by the end of June, then they will lose their license, since, it seems they themselves don’t know where the money has gone…….LOL…..BUT I do…..the institutional investors paid £1 (or 1p) and they were then floated at £70……

I have to be the THICKEST Celtic supporter on CQN.

I have NO idea whether or not Celtic should sign Johnny Russell, or ANYBODY else.

I don’t know if we should sell Hoops, Forster or Wanyama.

Even worse,.. I don’t care what Celtic do.

I will still completely SUPPORT whatever they do.

I trust them to do what they deem to be right at the moment they have to take their decisions.

I am glad that I don’t have the responsibility of calling the shots.

WHATEVER they do,.. will be what they think is best.

That is enough for me & has been for far more than 60 years.

I hope they get SOME of the decisions right.

I noticed an earlier link, not on screen at the moment, that Celtic were 25 in the UEFA coefficiency list with 16.860 for season 2012-13. Fantastic achievement, but one which needs to be repeated over a few seasons to take us in the right direction. Our previous four coefficients were way below this years so major opportunity to progress. Does anyone, (Auldheid) know if it takes account of domestic results as well as European?

K-HR’s Inter beat the dead club in 1984-5 UEFA Cup 2nd round – the zombies had beaten a League Of Ireland team (Bohemians?) in 1st round and in the process behaved as appallingly as you would expect

Not too sure about JR arm ink count. A bit inauspiciously Fox and Majstorovic like.

Has anyone good arrived with big tats?

  24. On Stokes

Talented but poor work rate and attitude – does little in the way of making defences work when they have the ball

Another player who seems to play better in the last year of his contract

Give him 4 years and he would hardly move his posterior for the first three!

    On Hooper

Best striker we have by the proverbial country mile IMHO

Not only a natural goal scorer but also the courage that AS lacks to go in where it hurts on a regular basis

Only forward on the books with any degree of physical presence

Would like him to stay but be honest if he’s getting offered more money then he will go.

    On Victor

A huge part of our team in more ways than one!

If he goes not only will he be missed in the middle of the park but also at the back and up front!

If he goes we need to replace him with someone or perhaps some others capable of winning the middle of the park and both protecting the defence and allowing the attack to win the game -that’s how important he is to the team.

Not been on for a few days but hope all well – is Weefra back on? I had a discussion the other night involving eggs and hope the events aren’t connected.

Dont know if we should sign Russell – kind of hope so but if not so be it.

Stokes, Hooper, Big Vic – excellent players so hope they stay.

Kojo- disagree with some of what he says ( and the way he says it on occasion) but so be it , he’s a Tim

Maria Sharapova – no. Don’t like. More of a Sabatini man or even Evonne Goolagong.
