On signing from domestic rivals

816

There are limits to how far we can recruit from our domestic market and continue to prosper.  Martin O’Neill preferred to sign players his teams had faced, which meant Hibs and St Johnstone being plundered, eventually leading to decline.  Gordon Strachan enjoyed watching Hibs all his life; it showed in his Celtic signings.

Rumour has it when Jock Stein signed Willie Wallace from Hearts in 1966 his timing was determined by the need to deny a rival Wallace’ signature.  Neil Lennon should find it easy to compete with the likes of Derby County, if he is motivated to do so.

Enjoy the fantastic clips of Willie Wallace below from the 1960s.  You’ll have seen many before but the clip of him beating three Celtic defenders before scoring was new to me.  It might have been the goal which convinced Jock to move.

If tony stokes doesn’t resign for Celtic I hope he teams up with his old countryman Jon Daly at sevco. They could make a smoking upfront partnership for the sevies and provide years of angst for the nazi minded over at the pit of doom.

Have you ever heard of an old Scottish athlete called Andy Dougan (not sure of surname spelling)? I was at a school awards night tonight and Andy was presenting an award. he’s a very interesting character, ninety five years old now and ran for Britain in the Olympics maybe in berlin or the one before. He joined the army and ended up as a POW on the Burma railway.

I heard his story 15 years ago as he’s a member of Carnoustie GC. The thing is, I thought he died years ago, oops.

Tonight I learned that he was still alive and his life story is now in print in a book called “Tomorrow we die”.

That will be my second holiday read after Heart of a Lion. Andy’s story is nothing short of remarkable and his athleticism saved his life and those around him from the hell of Japanese torture in the jungle of Burma.

If you get a chance check out his story.

    Hail Hail Andy Dougan
