On signing from domestic rivals

816

There are limits to how far we can recruit from our domestic market and continue to prosper.  Martin O’Neill preferred to sign players his teams had faced, which meant Hibs and St Johnstone being plundered, eventually leading to decline.  Gordon Strachan enjoyed watching Hibs all his life; it showed in his Celtic signings.

Rumour has it when Jock Stein signed Willie Wallace from Hearts in 1966 his timing was determined by the need to deny a rival Wallace’ signature.  Neil Lennon should find it easy to compete with the likes of Derby County, if he is motivated to do so.

Enjoy the fantastic clips of Willie Wallace below from the 1960s.  You’ll have seen many before but the clip of him beating three Celtic defenders before scoring was new to me.  It might have been the goal which convinced Jock to move.

Division 2 Fans pre-season ……..A lot of hot Ayr from the Airdrier

    Written by NoNotOne

I have been following a forum thread on the pie and Bovril site for the 2nd division which was started in March when we clinched promotion, entitled The Rangers are coming to division 2. It is still going strong and I have coupled with visits to other 2nd division teams forum’s to gauge the climate as just like players the fans are having their pre-season and I think things with at least three ‘rival’ clubs will be a little different in 13/14.

In general most contributors of all clubs on the Ranger’s factor are coming up with the usual stuff about having to put up with hoards of bigots singing sectarian songs, a fact they seem to have garnered from the mhedia who have made much of two reported incidents in Division 3 at Berwick and Montrose, so well done for keeping that in perspective; some fans are even stating they won’t be going to the games against us due to this. Some are worried about having to give up their home ends for Rangers fans, a couple declaring they will stay away due to this, once again it seems an overreaction for clubs only getting 400 to 800 per game in the usual course of events.

A general feeling seems to be we don’t like the Rangers but welcome the cash, which I think hasn’t been the reaction this year, I think we have made a lot of friends among the wee clubs in division 3 mainly I think because they have never met us in the League, (Queens excepted) so it was like cup tie day 4 times extra a season. In Division 2 there are those who already say they will not come to Ibrox, and of course the discussion is already underway about a possible dumbfermline boycott from Bears.

There has been of course a token thim on hand to pour scorn and lies who was told by other Division 2 fans of wee clubs to go to a forum about septic’s own division very quickly, but without him there a still lots of Rangers references, and the familiar garbage about us being a new club, no history, only trophy they have won is 3rd division title in their first year etc.

There is also a lot of supporters not looking forward to the prospect of a season where Rangers seem certain winners of the division leaving them to compete for the play-off promotion spot at best, although it was very soon this year that Queen of the South were so far ahead it was like that anyway. Some have called it a wasted season ahead and aren’t enamored by another one horse race, but as we have seen this season league matches that turn into 36 cup ties puts a lot of pressure on Rangers to perform week in week out and so the matches themselves can be very close and competitive.

The largest and most interesting portion of the debate so far seems to be with Ayr United supporters. They apparently except for ourselves think they are the biggest club in the division with their capacity of 10,000 and yet are deeply concerned that when the Rangers visit most of Ayr will turn up to support the Gers. I’m sure this is a familiar pattern wherever Rangers play, so don’t know why they are so mad about it. Those taking this line seem to be trying to say they are true fans who prefer a game against rivals Killie where the atmosphere will be better, and one or two seem to be giving the impression that a game against Kilmarnock is the height of their ambition.

They boast of regularly attracting crowd of 1500 plus to division 2 games and yet can’t see that two capacity’s against The Bears will generate an extra 18,000 paying customers, which will be like having at least 12 extra home games next season, taking into account concessions or season ticket holders.

Last season their attendance figures were these:

    4 Ayr United

    Total 18,119 Average 1,006

I think Ayr supporters are suffering from diddyitis, and would be perfect for the spl if only they had a team capable of winning football matches. It seems that a few good seasons in the 70’s which culminated in Ally Mcleod becoming Scotland Manager has born much self importance fruit and a lot of hot Ayr.

There is also a potent strand of anti Rangers to be found in Airdrie, it is surprising as they would seem to have trouble enough after their relegation from division 1, and the amount of support they had last year, to worry about us.

    8. Airdrie total 16,848 average 936

This example could have come from the East End of Glasgow but was from Pesadilla who lists his team as Airdrionians……his own spelling mistakes btw. ………..Not quite. I’m pretty sure if you canvassed fans they’d have preferred “Rangers” to be extinguished altogether rather than the zombie club rising from the ashes. Rangers should have been subject to a vote to join the league, as Airdrie were, and rejected on the same basis as Airdrie. It’s to the shame of every Scottish league chairman, except one, that Rangers were admitted to the SFL without a by your leave.

Interestingly, Rangers fans still have a gargantuan chip on their shoulders regarding admittance to the third. Rather than being grateful to the SFL they still attempt to circumvent the rules and see a place at the top table their divine right at the cost of the very clubs who gave them a place to play.

I think we all hope that their latest shambolic leadership crisis leads them directly down the road of another liquidation event where they can finally be completely extinguished from the Scottish footballing scene. Apart from being a load of codswallop, Rangers were voted back into the league as Airdrie were, I do detect a hint of animosity about Rangers from our friend here; they do have fans forum called The Stomp so maybe it is in their nature. It also smacks of the new non smoker syndrome, where you give up smoking then become a real zealot against it, so Airdrie got ruined financially, were saved and resurrected and now hate the idea of anyone else doing it, particularly as unlike them we didn’t have to form a new club. They also are full of bravado because following their financial collapse they have finally got the name Airdrieonians back as their official nomenclature for 13/14, so maybe that has invigorated them to come out fighting as it were and giving us already their version of ‘Fergie’s Airdrier.

Overall it would appear that because these two clubs have at one time or another been in the Top Division with Rangers and in some way see that as being our equal, or as is now the case better than us as we are, as Lochy would say in her weekly missives, the wee diddy team coming up out of the 3rd division with our 49,000 home supporters. It is also the classic angry little man syndrome where they have lauded it with tales of yore and heroic cup final defeats only for the Big Bear to loom into view to really show what a powerful force looks like.So it looks as if Division 2 will be eventful, with these old rivalries rekindled with these giant clubs from divisions above us last season, the fallen giants of Dumbfirmline adds spice, re boycott, and not forgotten comments from their pre administration days. We can look forward to days out as this year with wee teams who will welcome us and our cash like this season, but there is going to be some familiar old faces to compete against who will want the Rangers shilling but not the Rangers, so get those voices tuned lads and lassies, roll out the biggest banners you can take with you and show them that we are still the Rangers they know and …eeerr love.

Let us prove with sell out crowds everywhere, They like us despite the Hot Ayr have only come to see The Rangers.

  22. How’s this for a quote from BFDJ in this mornings edition of the Evening Times .

Talking about new signing Peralta ,

” Peralta will have to scrap and fight and punch in the second division this season . He has to show he can cope with the physicality of the Scottish game ”

Seems like its the boxing second division that the NEW team will be in next season . Sums up their football philosophy .

    Lennon ‘fraught’ over death threats

Published Thursday, 06 June 2013Share on facebookShare on redditMore Sharing Services4Celtic manager Neil Lennon has told UTV he considered leaving football when he was the subject of death threats.

We’re sorry. This video is unavailable from your location.

Bullets and parcel bombs were sent to the Lurgan man in the latest in a series of personal attacks.

The 41-year-old was previously targeted when he was a player, leaving Northern Ireland in 2002 after a warning from sectarian gangs.

He said the attacks in 2011 were “fraught times” which made him question his future as a manager.

“There were very fraught times – particularly the season before last – when you’re thinking ‘Is it really worth doing it?’

“I had a lot of police intelligence who kept me informed of what was going on […] but the one thing that kept me going was the players.

“Coming in and seeing them work every day, trying to improve, that whole environment that I worked in. I brought them here from all over the world and I felt as if I owed them that.

He added: “Thankfully things have turned a corner in all aspects of that. It’s just amazing.”

Lennon also denied he is “confrontational… bullish and not afraid to speak his mind”, describing himself instead as a “strong character”.

He explained: “If I feel that there’s an injustice or something to say about certain football aspects I will say it, but I’m not confrontational.

“If you ever see a newspaper there’s always a picture of me pointing the finger at one of my players, shouting at him as if I’m doing it for 94 minutes. But I do have time where I think about things in great depth.

Looking to the future with the hoops, Lennon said while some players will be leaving the club – including Republic of Ireland striker Anthony Stokes – he is also hoping to bring new players in.

Portuguese forward Amido Baldé could be on the move from current club Vitória SC with Lennon expected to lay down a £2.5m bid for the player.

But for now, Lennon is reflecting on last season’s victories in the Scottish championship and Scottish Cup.

He added: “The way we finished off the season, it was a perfect day for us all and on reflection there was a great way for the three years to end.”

    **********************

I don’t know any other football manager who would have stuck to the job like NFL did. The orange/ fascist scum tried to chase him out of the club and he stood tall, remember that when yir bickering about “potential” transfers.

    Have a nice day Celts.

    V

  24. Re Anto Stokes.

Not sure how accurate this is, and i ‘m sure our resident statisticians may well shoot this down, but as far as i can ascertain (SPL games only).

Hooper has played 90 league games for Celtic, which includes 5 as a sub. Goals scored 63 which is a very healthy +1.4 goals to game ratio

Stokes 58 games, which includes numerous appearances as a sub, 31 goals. Stokes goal per game ratio is an outstanding +1.87.

Why some of us can’t see that he is a major asset to the club is beyond me.

Russell – not for me. Why would we want him when we have Tony Watt.

  25. BFDJ also has a piece titled

Governing bodies are holding gers back , in which he moans about the proposed Scottish Professional Football League preventing the playing of trialists in league matches and has a wee dig at Stuart Lovell at the PFA for expressing concerns about trialists picking up injuries and the iPox club not honouring their contracts .

Parallel universe springs to mind , delusional doesn’t begin to cover it .

  26. A Ceiler Gonof Rust on

Anthony Stokes is a better ale puns player than Hooper.

Hooper has so far proven to be better on the big occasion.
