On signing from domestic rivals

816

There are limits to how far we can recruit from our domestic market and continue to prosper.  Martin O’Neill preferred to sign players his teams had faced, which meant Hibs and St Johnstone being plundered, eventually leading to decline.  Gordon Strachan enjoyed watching Hibs all his life; it showed in his Celtic signings.

Rumour has it when Jock Stein signed Willie Wallace from Hearts in 1966 his timing was determined by the need to deny a rival Wallace’ signature.  Neil Lennon should find it easy to compete with the likes of Derby County, if he is motivated to do so.

Enjoy the fantastic clips of Willie Wallace below from the 1960s.  You’ll have seen many before but the clip of him beating three Celtic defenders before scoring was new to me.  It might have been the goal which convinced Jock to move.

    Good Morning.

I listened to the Charlotte Tapes last night– albeit quickly and for me a couple of things stand out.

Remember that this conversation takes place in May– in fact none too long before Mr Whyte starts transferring six figure sums of money into the bank account of certain mammies, and not long before Charlie Green in on tape saying he needs £25k for FFW somewhat urgently.

That £25k is paid by Whyte’s cronie and pal……. Aiden ….. the man with the non bouncing cheque!

However what really struck me is that at precisely this time, by my recollection, Duff & Phelps were publicly lambasting Whyte– saying that his ticketus deal was all bollocks, that they would sue Collier Bristow as agents for Whyte, and generally leaking all sorts of info suggesting that Whyte was a basket case who had ruined Rangers.

Yet here they are having a nice wee cosy cuppa suggesting that Craigy call the lightweight bully Brian Kennedy about his shares, and saying that a Newco gets round the transfer embargo and all that jazz.

Whyte in turn reveals that he took a very short space of time to determine that Ally is not a football manager at all but a good man for a sound bite– more or less the same conclusion reached by Charles Green who you will reall had made plans to give Ally the bag!!

A good man for a sound bite.

A good man to have on board for the Gers fans to see and hear– just like Walter.

A good man to use to relieve the ordinary Ibrox customers of their money no matter what bull you feed them.

Meantime, the full mindset is revealed by the Salmond comment.

Even the professional administrators suffer from the delusional belief that if no one can square the Ibrox figures and understand the way how this business could actually be rescued and make a profit going forward ( meaning it lives within its means ), then they will just call in the Government!

There is nothing in the tapes to suggest that the Government will actually do sod all right enough, and Whyte readily acknowledges that whoever picks up this business for £5M or so will inevitably make a loss of £10M in the first year.

In all of what I listened to, in all that I have heard so far, there is one person in the conversation who, despite all else, recognises this business and the personnel involved for what it is and what they are– and that person is Craig Whyte!

He identifies the losses, identifies the management weaknesses, Identifies who has to be tolerated for the purposes of a sound byte and clearly trusts Duff and Phelps so much that he tapes the conversation!!

However, here is the real question:

If Whyte can identify inevitable losses of £10M per year ( at least ) within months of being in the Ibrox chair, why did it take a Nationally renowned business guru like David Murray the better part of twenty years to see the leak in the Ibrox boat?

Unless of course he saw that all along and could only keep the ship afloat by dodgy EBT like schemes, five yearly share floatations. excessive bank borrowings liberally given by a set of tame and out of control bankers, strange transfer dealings, creative accounting and ultimate Administrations and Insolvency ( always under consideration according to Whyte ) and a whole tapestry of interwoven croneyism and ignored conflicts of interest.

Or to put it another way:

We just don’t do paying our way!——– EVER.

However– always remember that in all of this, in all the administrative failures, iffy tax dealings and financial chicanery– there was no sporting advantage– intentional or otherwise…………. and I am a Leprechaun and I sit each day with a pot of gold underneath the end of a Rainbow!

  14. Good morning from a fabulously sunny Nordrhein Westfalen, 21*C at the moment rising to 23*C later. Having breakfast outside on the patio whilst listening to the Smiths. Best I’ve felt for a couple of days, the oldest son came back from Holland 2 weeks ago suffering from boy flu he passed it onto the wife where it mutated into burd flu and she passed it onto me and it has mutated into that most awful of all afflictions Man flu.

I need to point out that we are forever going on about the gullibility of the huns/zombies but there are one or two on here that suffer from the same complaint. Year-in, year-out we have guys going on about all these transfer targets that we are supposedly after then they have a go at the Board for failing to get that target! Guys it is made up MSM p!sh!!!

Who had heard of Victor Wanyama, Garry Hooper, Beram Kayal, Fraser Forster, etc until they were actually unveiled at CP on the day they signed for the club? Half the time somebody mentions a player on here and the next day or so they are in the paper as a target.

As regards Mr Russell if Lenny wants him we just need to match Derby’s bid and Mr Russell will make the decision which team he wants to play for. For those guys who see Tony Watt as the answer to everything, I’m sorry, Tony is a fantastic raw talent but he has a long way to go yet before he becomes the finished article that’s why signing players like Johnny Russell may be beneficial. Anyhoos, all will be revealed on Monday when Mr Russell returns from holiday.

Happy Birthday Pedro. BT I hope you are feeling better!

That reminds me of a great work colleague I had about 10 months ago, a guy who suffered from depression, I never delved deep into his spiritual beliefs, I wish I had now.

He gets his daughter at the weekend and he teaches her all the right things. The one thing that stood out in my mind was, if it was killed to be consumed, make sure you eat it all out of respect.
