On signing from domestic rivals

816

There are limits to how far we can recruit from our domestic market and continue to prosper.  Martin O’Neill preferred to sign players his teams had faced, which meant Hibs and St Johnstone being plundered, eventually leading to decline.  Gordon Strachan enjoyed watching Hibs all his life; it showed in his Celtic signings.

Rumour has it when Jock Stein signed Willie Wallace from Hearts in 1966 his timing was determined by the need to deny a rival Wallace’ signature.  Neil Lennon should find it easy to compete with the likes of Derby County, if he is motivated to do so.

Enjoy the fantastic clips of Willie Wallace below from the 1960s.  You’ll have seen many before but the clip of him beating three Celtic defenders before scoring was new to me.  It might have been the goal which convinced Jock to move.

  1. Craig Levine worked with Johnny Russell for a couple of years

    he became Scotland manager

He picked James Forrest over Johhny Russell

    right enough CL was a tube : > )

Decent prospect better than what we have ???

I don’t see it and never have.

Tin hat on now but for me his attitude stinks of “big-time ism”

I honestly think he gets away with murder due to his Irishness blinding some to his faults.

Some on here in defending him lead off with his ethnicity rather than his supposed talent.

And while we’re on the subject – what kind of Irishman knocks back his country cos he’s “too tired” in May 2011 when he’d hardly kicked a ball for us in months beforehand.

    Taxi for Stokes …….

thought both had their part to play and Hoops control was ace especially for the first goal, reminded me of henke a bit, the way he ghosted in-between two defenders, am a great admirer of hoops and really do hope he stays!

  4. Paul 67…magic clips thanks

Winning Captain…. Faither had Willie Wallace book delivered today, devouring it as we speak…many thanks.

Just switched on SSN to be confronted with Gerry McCulloch at the Bigot done conducting what appeared to be a call to arms for the zombies to buy season tickets!!!

    Disgusting.

Kids away back to school, grass cut, maybe a couple of bottles of lager out the back garden.

Weathers like Benidorm here in West Lothian.

Tom & Miki 67…..stay strong , god bless

    Hail Hail to all CQNers

  5. I would rather loose Hooper for nothing next summer than sell him for £7m this.

Simple reason, our chances of quailifying and then competing well in the CL are greatly enhanced with Gary Hooper in the team than without.

We don’t have to sell, the books are balanced as far as I know, so why the urgency to sell?

He is the best goal scorer we have, they are a rare breed.

Balance the team sheet not just the balance sheet.

Any other striker will take time to bed in, even if they are signed for the qualifiers, which they are not likely to be.

    Just an opinion.

    Hi Ho.

  6. When Celtic were in the Europa League, Stokes sometimes led the line on his own and did it superbly.

Stokes has the talent, he just needs the consistency.

  7. Oh, and Paul67, Winning Captains, thanks, the book arrived. Dated 25th of May, class.

I now have a week to read it before giving to Auld Doc as a Fathers Day gift, cheeky I know, but…………….

  8. Corkcelt,

    Maybe you’re right.

Anyway it shows how far we’ve come in 3 years if I’m sitting here saying saying Stokes is one of the weak links in our squad.

Thank god there’s no more Hooiveld, Fortune, Majstorovic, Cha, Rasmussen, Juarez, Murphy or Loovens!!!

  9. Doc

Seriously …I’m glad you’re not in charge of finances

We cannot afford to let Hooper see out his contract

    Squire

I’m with you re Stokes ….his attitude is appalling at times …he played very well in the Final …the exception to the rule IMO

  10. I like the cut of JR’s jib. A threatening forward with a touch of attitude.

If Celtic’ front man choice was from Hooper, Stokes, Russell and Watt I’d be happy with that.

If Hooper were to go however I would want any fee spent on a replacement for him along with the three left behind.

I have no idea who that might be but that is John Park’s job and so far he is better at it than any of us. How many good players have spotted and signed?

  11. fanadpatriot on

If it is a choice between J Russell and K Doyle I hope we go for JR a young and hungry player,3/4 years ago I would’ve taken KD but not now,but if we want to make a statement Jordan Rhodes is your man.

Afternoon all,if I ordered Willies book today would it be delivered before fathers day guys ? Any help would b appreciated.

  13. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Doc is NL. Do you think Hooper would give his all if he knew he was leaving at the end of the season ? also 7 Million is a lot of money to Celtic and the old saying comes to mind a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.H.H.

  14. “have we spotted and signed”.

This phone is going into the missing words corner

  15. On Stephen Fletcher and McCarthy.

We have not lost out on the transfer fees that Fletcher has been transferred for.

We could only have transferred him once.

If he had been successful at Celtic ( hypothetically) then he would probably have been sold to a SPL club for more than Hibs received for him.

However he would still not have been sold for the level of fee’s that he has gone for until he was proven in the EPL.

He has gone for large transfers because he was already proven in the EPL.

Even if he had CL experience ,many in the EPL don’t value that as much as EPL success.

Put me firmly in the Johnny Russell for Celtic camp. I’d love to see a twin spearhead of Watt and Russell playing for Celtic. Two Coatbrig Bhoys. What’s not to like?

  17. ….PFAyr, I see it differently, I don’t think we can go into the qualifiers without him.

We aren’t in a difficult place financially, and we don’t play football on a balance sheet!

He may even be persuaded to sign an extension later.

A lot of opinion seems to be that we can’t afford to let him see out his contract, why can’t we?

Our finances are healthy and we have a playing asset whose value is more on the field rather than sold as an financial asset.

Another point, the £7m mentioned is entirely of the top of my head, how much would he actually raise in a transfer, given he can sign a per contract in 6months?

    Really got to work now.

  18. fanadpatriot on

John Park must be given credit for some very good signings, but he also been responsible for more than a few duds.I wonder if anyone has his signing stats ?

  19. mearns 2 milton on

Hooper is desperate to play in EPL. Even if its for a Stoke or Norwich which is a massive step dwon. Celtic will sell when the time is right. So who would we like to realistically replace him?

Obsessive me used to go to places like Chicago and spend days digging through second hand stores / junk shops and bargain bins .

I have a few 45s on Bandit Records . There is a great Majestic Arrows LP —- The Magic of The Magic Arrows.

Not to be confused with a Nashville label called Bandit Records who issued some excellent George Jones / Merle Haggard choons..

    Happy Digging !

I agree re Fletcher….only when a SPL player plays well in a better league will massive fees be paid

Eg..Song to Barca for £17m …VW is a better player …we will not get £17m for him never mind more

  22. unionbearBhind on

Of the opinion if hoops left even for big bucks we would struggle for a replacement even if every penny was spent on said replacement?

Lenny plays sammi wide left when in europe, for his pace, strength and danger in the air.

Lenny’s big problem is that we have to play a different system in scotland than when we play in europe. Barca et al have more of the ball, play a higher line etc than ross county for example. Different systems require different types of footballer.

One solution to help unify the systems, imho, would be to find a cheap, deep lying no. 10 to pick holes in packed defences (at home) and spring offside traps on the break (in europe). Unfortunately these seem to be thin on the ground.

Another solution maybe to find another henrik. A strong player who can play with his back to goal, can hold in the ball and give it out, is good in the air but who also is a strong, direct, clever, skilful runner with and without the ball who can score with both feet and his head. Apparently, these are in short supply also.

Therefore, Lenny will have to be very moneyball in his approach. As he can’t find a single player who can do everything he needs in his price bracket, he will try for a couple of players who collectively he can afford and who hopefully will at different times suit his main tactical scenarios.

All in all, this should be a very interesting transfer window, with I’d imagine a few left-field recruitments.

  24. Doc

The £7m was your figure…if it is £2-3m then I agree with you

Say we don’t sell Hooper and lose out on a £7m fee and dont make it to the CL group stage …bad news financially IMO

  26. Re Steven Fletcher

burnley 35 apps 8 goals. Approx 1 goal every 4 matches.

Wolves 61 apps 22 goals.Just better than 1 goal in every 3 matches.

    Sunderland 28 apps 11 goals.Just better that a goal every 2.5 matches.

    So he is improving,but 11 goals in a season.C’mon.

Paying £12million for him shows just how over inflated inside trading is from EPL club to EPL club.

Gary Hooper and Stokes have proved much better value for an SPL club.

We were right not to go after Fletcher.

And McCarthy is not a patch on Victor Wanyama.

    So there!
