On signing from domestic rivals

816

There are limits to how far we can recruit from our domestic market and continue to prosper.  Martin O’Neill preferred to sign players his teams had faced, which meant Hibs and St Johnstone being plundered, eventually leading to decline.  Gordon Strachan enjoyed watching Hibs all his life; it showed in his Celtic signings.

Rumour has it when Jock Stein signed Willie Wallace from Hearts in 1966 his timing was determined by the need to deny a rival Wallace’ signature.  Neil Lennon should find it easy to compete with the likes of Derby County, if he is motivated to do so.

Enjoy the fantastic clips of Willie Wallace below from the 1960s.  You’ll have seen many before but the clip of him beating three Celtic defenders before scoring was new to me.  It might have been the goal which convinced Jock to move.

On record as an advocate (or is that an Advocaat) for a front line pairing of both Stokes and Fletcher. Stokes and Hooper is better than that, and Hooper will outscore Fletcher over his career. Stokes brings something to Celtic that is undervalued, a belief and a determination not to be messed about. Worst case scenario, we lose Hooper and Stokes and fail to land Russell.

  2. My take on Scott Browns comments to today’s newspapers.

Stokes wants to stay.Celtic want Stokes to stay.

A deal will more than likely be struck to keep him at CP.

Which pleases me more than PFAYR.

I do however agree that he has a big time Charlie attitude.

    NOW .

Why has Scott Brown never said that Hooper wants to stay?

Celtic want him to stay ,they have offered him a new contract.

    Hoops wants to go.

Reading between the lines his club captain ,thinks that also.

There is a clamour from all parts CFC for him to stay …..

    Hmmm.

Anyone else think Charlotte Fakes might just be trying to turn Carlos Bocanegra’s head in the build-up to Saturday evening’s crunch game against Hércules?

If Racing overcome the men from Alicante, they have a chance of staying in the second division after a turn of events this week that will never catch on.

The Spanish football league (a single body for all the divisions, that’ll never catch on either), has demoted Guadalajara to the third tier because of alleged “irregularities” in the way that club raised extra capital last summer. Guadalajara are in seventeenth position out of twenty-two, but looked to be safe before the bombshell landed. They clearly have much to learn about the distinctions between their football club (which managed to stay up) and the holding company that raised a bit of extra capital, as if one had anything to do with the other.

As things stand, only bottom club Xerez is down (on football). Racing will fight it out with Murcia and wee Nacho Novo’s Pyrenean Novo-Numpties, Huesca. Whichever of them achieves the Ramsdenesque accolade of finishing fourth-last will now stay up at Guadalajara’s expense.

Guadalajara’s president will lodge and appeal and has promised to create merry hell.

  14. Theboywithmcgraininhisside,

I agree with pretty much all your points. I wasn’t trying to say Stokes or Russell should play wide left ahead of Sammy in Europe.

My initial point was just that I didn’t think Stokes has much to offer at European level and that Johnny Russell would be worth a cheap gamble as a replacement for Stokes. My reasoning behind this is he can score at SPL level, is improving every year and because he is pacey he is a better option than Stokes for Europe.

Anyway I’m off to bed in Sydney…..good chatting to you buddy:-)

On the Stokes signing debate i think you have made some very astute point.

He did have a great game at the final.

He is a very frustrating player at times brilliant and often brutal.

He showed how good he can be when he involves himself as a team player.

On other occasions he can be very selfish.

If he was a consistent player his value would be enormous

My concern would be if he gets a big contract he may over rate himself and become more selfish.

Hopefully our coaches will make the right decision for team and player.

  18. Given we tend to play 4 attacking players in most games, whether in a 4-4-2, 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation, we should be aiming to have 8 players fighting for those 4 positions. Some similar in style (Stokes, Watt) , others completely different (Samaras) but all able to fit into any of the systems.

Assuming Hooper goes we have Stokes, Watt, Samaras, Forrest & Commons so need 3 more. A big striker is obviously on the manager’s list (Balde, Sagbo, Doyle?) a wide player (Tonev, McClean?) and another versatile forward who can play through the middle or coming in from the wing (Russell, or someone else Lenny is looking at?). The three newcomers would replace Miku, Lassad & Hooper, if he leaves, in the squad.

  19. IMO I think JR would be a marvelous long term signing for us, selling Hooper is a no brainer before his contract ends. Could Russell make up the goals Hooper scored at CL level, maybe not, but in the qualifiers yep, I think he could do the business. I think he is an exciting prospect and would do a great job where his heart lies….!

If stokes goes you may well be right. I don’t think he will tho. This rejected contracted schenanigans is imho just a case of mr 15% attempting to earn his corn.

Not to everyone’s taste but I wouldn’t be surprised in kevin doyle ends up at celtic park. Remembering how he played with a more deep lying robbie keane for ireland against teams with better players, I think lenny sees commons in that position as doyle’s foil…

    Anyhoo, great chatting, good night.

    HH

  21. Kayal

I agree …that’s why I think Russell would be a decent addition

Besides which …between Sammi,Forrest ,Stokes and Commons …there were a lot of games missed thro injury

  22. IMHO… the manager will be looking to bring in players to replace the first team players who may leave (Hooper, Wanyama…) and who can fit in to the style of play that he has established which is based on possession play.

However, he must have noticed that in several games where we were absent or out-classed… vs St.Johnstone, St.Mirren, Juventus, Benfica… that he would be looking for players who might offer something different that could alter the style of play.

As much as I like Russell, I don’t think he offers anything radically different that could change the style of play in important games although maybe some domestic games.

When watching Barcelona, how many times did people critcise them for not having a plan B? Well, it’s the same with Celtic – there were games when we were howling for a plan B. To dominate the Scottish game and make advances in the group stages in the CL, I would be hoping that the manager brings in players with experience but others who would also offer something very different to the whole gameplay – even if it were for the last 10mins fo a match.

I also liked how we set up in a few of the final league games of the season, 4312, with commons in the hole. With Ki and now paddy gone, we have to find a passer who can play as part of the three in midfield. Any ideas?

    Starry,

Of course I don’t have a quote. However, it seems glaringly obvious to me. He wants to play for England. Two players from the SPL out of plenty of Englishmen in the last 12 years have been picked for England. Only one has been given any game time. He knows he can earn more money down south, he has rejected two Celtic contract extension. Obviously I do not know 100% however it is my OPINION he wants away and to the EPL

Same principle is why Hooper or Wanyama are at valuations way below full potential if the deliver same form in EPL.

Spot on. If Hooper doesn’t want to stay he should go now. I remember some on here in January saying he had to stay so we could get past Juve and get more money in. Look what happened there.

Also, if his mind is on a move he’s not going to be totally on the job in the qualifiers.

  29. Loved the Willie Wallace clips today, fantastic stuff.

On a side note, the song “Thank you for the days” always reminds me of Kirsty McColl and the terrible tragedy that resulted in her death. The fact her two sons were with her in the water at the time and the lack of justice surrounding the incident.

Shows how fragile life can be.

  30. mearns 2 milton

Why wouldn’t he want to play in England, he English and their league is better than ours, the question is does he think he is going this season or not, his not signing a new contract like Anthony Stokes’s could be a question of money, i.e. Celtic are not offering what the players think they are worth which in my opinion is just as good a reason not to sign as wanting away!!

Just heard Napoli’s owner on the radio .—

He repeated that Edinson Cavani can go for a minimum of 63 million euros .

That was followed by an interview featuring Cavani saying that if he can’t move to Real Madrid then he’d rather stay at Napoli ..

Allegedly , Real Madrid don’t have the necessary but Chelsea / Manchester City and PSG do ..

    Cavani is a player.

Apparently, more than just Guadalajara fans will kick up if Murcia are the ones to stay up. Murcia, apparently, have debts of €30 million and haven’t paid their players for five months.
