One man’s trauma and vulnerabilities

219

We don’t owe our modern greats anything, all of them were suitably compensated for services rendered, but one suffered more than most for wearing green and white hoops.  For what he endured to play for and manage Celtic, Neil Lennon will always receive my respect and gratitude.

He became the most racially abused person in Scotland’s history.  Even his treatment by his peers at court is a stain on a nation that lies to itself about its collective moral code with great conviction.

Oh, you didn’t know about the vulnerabilities?  Well, he has only written about and discussed them for the best part of a decade.  There can be no doubt these wounds were exposed during 2020.  When he needed support, he found levels of hostility without precedent, from some, because of his race, from others, because of football results.

The man at the centre of the storm will not care where you to fit these two groups into an ethical hierarchy, but I suspect I know the actions of which caused the most emotional trauma.  Still, football results, and all that.  Just because we can find a neighbour below us on the ethical scale, does not make us ethical.

‘He’s a coward who gets worked up about some SNP fool from the 1930s’

    ###

Arthur Donaldson was not just ‘some SNP fool from the 1930s’. To suggest that he was displays either your ignorance or your dishonesty.

He was the leader of the SNP throughout the 1960s.

He stood for Parliament on behalf of the SNP in 1945 and 1970.

He was, and continues to be, revered by the SNP.

So much so that no less a person than Nicola Sturgeon delivered a lecture in his honour relatively recently.

Now it may be that Sturgeon could claim that she knew nothing of Donaldson’s history, or that she had forgotten about it. This is after all the woman who claims to have known nothing about Alex Salmonds lecherous reputation or the countless rumours about his inappropriate behaviour.

So the relevance of Arthur Donaldon to the current debate is not that he had hoped for Hitler to win the war, but that the SNP honour him.

It shows to what depths they are prepared to stoop in order to achieve their goal of Scottish independence, if they can take in their stride the idea of doing a deal with Hitler.

I see Arlene Foster is suing some TV doctor about a tweet he made suggesting Ms Foster was having an affair with one of her security guards. I wonder what level of damages she can seek? It won’t be one-tenth of what is due to the poor security guard

I stand behind Glen Kamara in that I (in common with the rest of us) abhor racism in all its forms.

The comment should not have been made it clearly had racist undertones, sadly I have heard far worst both in workplaces and my time spent at all levels of football I have participated in, I do think the circumstances leading up to the incident offer the Slavia Prague player some mitigation, watching your goalkeeper have his head caved in that manner, then clearly, Sevco fearing the tie slipping and prior to the incident got over-aggressive by kicking out at Slavia players on the ground, understandably he wanted revenge of a sort and his anger got the better of him leading to a comment that shouldn’t have been made, Sevco turning it all into a media circus with a lawyer who loves publicity was brilliant PR, it worked superbly.

Another dark day for the internet and the season from the bottom less pit.

Not ‘rating’ Neil Lennon as your ideal Celtic manager was one thing for many to post about, but filming him when he’s clearly very down is surely another low, in the life of any so called Celtic supporter, I mean who would do such a thing? With these videos shared inside and outside the Celtic community they serve no purpose but to darken a man’s name, after he’s already been dismissed from his job and position you object to him being in. These video’s do terrible harm to the Celtic cause and to Neil Lennon’s family, especially his son, who labour under the misapprehension that they can become every day Glaswegians, its a fight they’ll have forevermore and they’ll come up against intolerance, the moment they put a toe out their circle.

Bad enough you’d have thought as a person never mind an Irishman in a deeply, deeply anti Irish atmosphere to have faced the biggest and most sustained campaign of sectarian abuse of any player or manager in Scottish football. Randomly assaulted on at least three occasions, not to mention sent bombs in the post which sadly made world headlines.

To the guy that shot and shared the video, – get a life pal.

Have you ever heard of an old song called “Standing On The Corner Watching All The Girls Go By”?……no? I thought not.

Anyway there is a line in that song that goes like this “Brother you can’t go to jail for what you’re thinking” – now that is still as true today as it was in the 1950s when the song came out.

    ———

There is no collective moral code in Scotland. There has always been a piece of Ulster poisoning daily life and livelihoods of the minority for over one hundred years.

I understand your take on “collective moral code”

Don’t think it exists in any country I’ve lived in and I’ve lived in quite a few but what’s the point of quoting a song to dig yourself out of a hole ?

  20. Anyone thinking we would have got the same supportive meeja furore over an……ANY….allegations of racist abuse don’t know what they are talking about.

Anyone thinking Dominic will be able to cut a swathe through Celtica PR boundaries are indulging in wishful thinking.

Have we not been paying enough attention?

Had we been in the huns situation , the allegation would not have gained any meaningful momentum…..in fact ours would have been questioned, queried and in some places ridiculed, portrayed as sour grapes, clutching at straws….symptomatic of our decline, unsporting, etc etc etc…………..

There would have been no furore, no national debate. The Tims goat beat – time for hilarity and celebration.

Dominic won’t change things , only Scotland can change things like this issue and until it has the baws to admit its horrible relationship with anti- Irish, anti-Celtic, anti-Catholic rhetoric nothing will change and we’ll have to swallow hunned-up guff and hectoring from huns and hun friendly meeja about…….
