One of the most dangerous games of the season

349

Celtic’s season is perched at a tantalising angle, but if you know your history, you’ll know that such pent-up potential often flounders in scrappy cup encounters.  Set to face Kilmarnock in the League Cup final, they are favourites in the league and have not allowed a Scottish club to lay a glove on them in almost three months.  No one is tipping against them in any competition, but despite being in exactly this situation many times in the last 40 years, only once have they been able to see out a straightforward looking campaign and collect the three trophies available.

All it takes is a bumpy away ground in the middle of winter to level the playing field (metaphorically, if only it would literally) and deliver the inevitable cup exit.  Our chances of winning tomorrow are no better than 50/50.  Inverness know the script, they are a decent team who, despite two cup exits to Celtic last season, had enough in their locker to deny us five points in the league.

Celtic have a potential of five cup games remaining this season across both competitions, but after Inverness, only one of those can be away from home.  With league form seemingly set by metronome, you’re looking at one of the most dangerous games of the season tomorrow.

“Nowadays at half time players are eating chocolate and sugary drinks because sports scientists say it is good for them. When I played after training we would nip along to Joe’s Kitchen at Parkhead Cross and eat sausage, bacon and eggs. As an alternative we would eat soup and a plate of chips and wash it all down with milkshakes. So it is all change today”. Celtic coach Tommy Burns speaking in the summer of 2007.

Commons played very well that day,as did McCourt, when he entered the fray.

Kayal tried in vain to fight fire with fire, only to have his wrist broken. He was the victim of a brutal assault,in full view of the “referee”,whom decided to take no action against the guilty party. The MIB afforded our footballers no protection whatsoever.

Maloney,Wilson and one or two others…I would rather not speak about their “efforts” in that particular game.

It still sickens me to this day, when i think about that game. That’s why i try not to think about it too much.

A good victory 2mara,and the treble would go a long way to help erase that nightmare from the memory.

Agree – I’d actually put Matthews in at LB – pace on either side with a tight 3 in the middle. Stokes and Forrest supporting Hooper from wider positions. I mean, we can’t be scared of them, but need that tight midfield 3. Mulgrew at LB to bring in another partner for Rogne is a no no – destrys what ;ittle continuity we have plus Mulgrw is poor at LB. Ledley to LB weakens the MF. So Adam for me.

For anyone heading home today from Londinium

A freight train engine has derailed on the West Coast main line at Bletchley leaving no services running between London Euston and Milton Keynes.

There are major delays for rail passengers with London Midland, Southern and Virgin rail services all affected.

London Midland has advised passengers not to travel as all lines are blocked.

However, tickets are being accepted on Chiltern, East Midlands and First Capital Connect services.

Network Rail hopes that two of the four lines will be cleared by “early” afternoon.

As for ramorra, if the MIB gives our players proper protection, we should wipe the floor with them. Mind you, that is very big IF.

  9. Poordeadking….. look up Trailfinders in Glasgow…sorted me out just dandy for a complicatd Oz trip with hunners of different airports involved. Saved a packet.

P.S. If celtic wear the hoops tomorrow, we’ll win at a canter. Wear anything else, especially that yellow effort and we’ll struggle. IMHO of course.

Off to the bookies now. Huns v arabs a guaranteed replay. (televised by the BBC of course)

Why is john a scumbag,is it because he plays for chelsea or what ,what he does in his private life is his business ,as for the rio fernindad thing well the courts will decide on that in the summer. i bet there is a few on here with skeletons in there cupboard.so in other words mind your on business.

  11. Celtic boss Neil Lennon has dismissed reports he was angry with his coach Alan Thompson for having a drink with Rangers keeper Allan McGregor.

The Scottish Sun reported that Lennon would be having “showdown talks” with Thompson on Friday morning.

However, ahead of Saturday’s Scottish Cup fifth-round tie at Inverness, Lennon said: “It is a nothing story. One of my staff and Allan McGregor frequent the same pub. Wow.

“The media are the ones who say that more should be done to put away the sectarian element and I have been there myself when Allan has been in and had his company for 15, 20 minutes.

“It is a very difficult thing to do in Glasgow sometimes but there is total respect between Alan and Allan.

“I don’t know the whole story of went on that night but it is very difficult for Celtic and Rangers players to socialise with each other in the city.

“But it happens every now and again and now all of a sudden one of the tabloids want to make a whole big thing about it.

“It only stirs it up, in my eyes that is what they are basically trying to do, stir up some sort of controversy that isn’t really there.

    “I think it is disgusting.”

It has been a disgusting paper for years ‘cough’ ‘cough’

Interesting move to have Stokesy playing the role of the lone striker.Decent shout. He done well up-front on his own in a few of the Europa games.

I would still start with Samaras though.

  14. We shouldn’t meddle with central defence, especially if it means putting Mulgrew to LB. If Izzy is fit and ready play him, if not play Cha and shift Matthews to LB.

Stokes/Hooper must start and i’d bring back Commons for Forrest

    Forster

    Matthews Rogne Mulgrew Izaguirre

    Brown Wanyama Ledley Commons

    Stokes Hooper

Subs Zaluska Wilson Samaras Brozek Forrest

Let them worry about us. We lost last April because we went with a kamakaze 4-2-4 with both Commons and Maloney on the wings. Brown Wanyama and Ledley as a solid middle 3 and let the front 3 do their stuff.

    Ghood article m8!

Sounding a, much needed note of caution. I still think that mibbery will be our biggest opponent for the remainder of the season. As we know only too well, our history is littered with crucial games that have been the victim of some of the worst examples of mibbery. One game at a time please.

  23. I wonder how long it will take the LL to start spouting about how few Scots players we have in our team. It is possible that we may only have 2 Scots in our starting 11 tomorrow. Bonnie & Cahir Mulgrew. All part of the save Der Hun campaign wait for articles about how a new Rankers will be so good for scottish football as they will have to develop young Scots talent, the loss of the Orcs will signal the end of the Scots national team -just look at how many Scots players Celtic field each game. Watch this space!

  24. The huns will try anything, ANYTHING to equate our goodselves with their historic and traditional bigotry.

They know that their reputation for bigotry is their single biggest, most defining trait on a Europe and Worldwide context.

For almost all of their existence they have been able to keep the issue out of the spotlight helped by a complicit media.

Not any more. Hence the rabid reactions of the trapped rats.

Shame is not good for hun business.

The revolution in social media has taken control of ‘Scotland’s Shame’ and allowed forums such as this one to highlight the full context of the conditions we operate in.

They’ll attempt to drag us down to their level by choosing a certain word or phrases that have no sectarian meaning or provenance and falsely imbue it with a meaning that suits their own twisted purpose and logic.

This is a more subtle and longer-term strategy that will only become more insidious with the passing of the trumped-up “offensive act”.

The huns have defined themselves by their own actions.

Perhaps the commercial disaster that awaits them will give them the opportunity to change. I hope so.

    Until then,

    Hell mend them.

    HHH.

We should respect Inverness but certainly not fear them we imo could field a second team against them and still win if our attitude is right.Lennie has a large pool of players to pick from I dont thn he should any of of our new signings unless later in the game we have won the tie.I will go for a 1-2 to the hoops.H.H.
