Operation Get Lawwell Out

837

When Tony Mowbray was in charge of Celtic the club wrote to the SFA regarding the standard of refereeing in Scotland almost on a weekly basis.  The outcome of this correspondence was not constructive, if anything, some at the Association hardened their stance.

A lot has subsequently happened.

Yesterday’s Sunday Mail referred back to Celtic’s dialogue with the SFA during Mowbray’s tenure, which I found interesting.  Soon after, when a referee was found to have lied to Neil Lennon (and his supervisor), the association were vulnerable.  Wounds opened at that time which have not healed.

The ‘paper suggested Peter Lawwell is “Driven, obsessively controlling, politically statute, manipulative.  A master of the dark arts.  There’s nothing he won’t do to get Celtic what they want.  No-one he won’t attempt to control to get it”.

Quite a character assassination.  I wonder what they’re worried about?

We are also told that our chief exec has “An over-arching influence on every facet of the Scottish game. He could have had a crack at sorting it for everyone.  But no. That wouldn’t have sold any season tickets, would it?”

Those of you who bought a season ticket on the back of Peter Lawwell’s letter must feel the club went to extraordinary lengths to win your business.  The article shared the fantasy many football fans have that Peter Lawwell being on the SFA board means Peter Lawwell controls the SFA.  He doesn’t, but he is a formidable advocate of reform.

So what are they worried about?  From my perspective, pretty much everything.  The old ways were liquidated, we’re living in times with only one Super Power.  The old ways are gone and they are never coming back.

Calls for Peter Lawwell to resign from the SFA board because he “wouldn’t recognise the greater good” are laughable.  Those who interpret subtext will know this reads ‘Lawwell is an animated asker of difficult questions’.

What started five years ago with DVDs arriving at Hampden showing Robbie Keane yards onside has gotten a whole lot more serious, and personal, judging by the sustained attack on our CEO.  If you think this is about Celtic writing a letter about a referee decision a week ago you couldn’t be further from the truth.

Never try to manipulate a master of the dark arts.

This year’s CQN Golf Open will be held on Friday 24 July at Aberdour Golf Club. This is our 11th annual event and looks set to be a cracker once again. We shall be raising funds for one of our nominated charities and there will be a number of fundraising activities both on the day and in the weeks leading up to the event.

Please keep an eye open for details. Cost for the golf day is £80 including the meal at night. There are a limited number of night time places for non-golfers, cost £45.

To apply for a place, please contact cqnopen15@gmx.co.uk

    Hamiltontim,

Police officers become a success by making arrests.

It is all about numbers, I am sure for the (Dallas) type, this is a gift.

Don’t find a really crook, late at night.

Sure, hang about a football ground…pick up a teenager and clock up your numbers…then have paperwork to do at night.

    Clogher

And precisely because it is about targets and numbers and the mountain of paperwork, the now single force which means if you don’t toe the line you can be sent from say Paisley to Shetland over night, they are quitting in droves.

  4. Just seen some of that programme on Sports Direct. Thank God we escaped the clutches of Ashley. I can even feel a wee bit of concern for those benighted denizens of Ibrox (for the first time ever). You have to be mad to take him on. They are well and truly done for, imo.

The drive towards sweatshop conditions began long before Sweatshop Direct.

It began with Thatcher and like his predecessor John Major, Labour imposter on an overseas tour was advocating that a good reason why businesses should come to Britain was the freedom to pay low wages.

Talking of Labour. Has anyone heard Jim Murphy mention repealing Tory anti Trade Union Laws or as mentioned earlier, the requirement to pay to take an employer to a tibunal.

    Friesdorfer …

I can only see two scenarios with respect to the 5way agreement …. either it was done with Celtic’s knowledge, or it wasn’t. If the former, we are compromised. If the latter, we were woefully and inexcusably played by a bunch of buffoons. Either way, it doesn’t reflect well on those running Celtic. But, as shareholders, we should know which one it is.

    ========

How about being outvoted as a simple answer?

One club out of how many is surely a clue, or do you think Celtic should throw a tantrum when they don’t get their way?

That third democratic option might explain the what’s and whys.

    ****

    Auldheid

“is surely a clue” and “might explain” is exactly the problem.

After all these years, we shouldn’t be having to parse words on a blog to know what happened/what Celtic did.

The first issue isn’t what Celtic did or didn’t do (although that could be an issue, once the facts are disclosed). The first issue has to be Celtic’s selective use of the press and/or its failure to address issues which are of concern to many of its shareholders (concerning its actions/inactions).

Your question assumes that ‘Celtic didnt get their way’. How would anyone know that? Celtic fail or refuse to communicate about these issues with their fans and shareholders.

The point is that we dont even know what Celtic’s ‘way’ is. What do Celtic want? Have Celtic taken steps to seek to have Sevco stripped of titles when they were financially doping? I (and many of us) dont know because Celtic dont seem to want to address this issue.

From what IS known (for example, many joint sponsorships, DD’s statements to the press, Celtic continuing to refer to R****s on Celtic’s website THIS WEEK), Celtic seem happy to be in bed with Sevco. That is what the evidence I have seen suggests.

There may be more (perhaps even lots more) evidence that suggests something else … but unless and until it is disclosed by Celtic, us plebes (who are the ones who pay PL’s salary) are left to guess.

I thought the old days of the Kelly’s and Whites, and Celtic being run by and for a select few behind closed doors were over. Increasingly, it is seeming like those old days are back again.

I appreciate that these things take time but the old saying is true … justice delayed is justice denied. And at a certain point in time, failing to speak out against a wrong (particularly if and when you have full knowledge and are in a position to do something about it) makes one complicit in the wrongdoing.

Celtic are not shy in going to the press when it suits them (e.g., on stamping out RA songs at Celtic park), but are noticably silent on other key issues (sevco songs at Celtic Park, the 5 way agreement).

When a handful of people at Celtic know what happened, but refuse to tell the vast majority of shareholders … that is not democracy …. that is the exact opposite of democracy.

  19. Personally, while I do wonder why there are no Catholics in the Scottish Cabinet, I don’t really get bothered by it. What does bother me is that there seem to be members of the Cabinet who have an anti-Catholic/Irish/Celtic mindset.

Another thing which I really find hard to fathom is how Nicola Sturgeon, who certainly seems to me left-wing, will reconcile the right wing folk who are the SNP’s traditional support.

  21. Coneybhoy, Stokes is under contract, why on earth would Celtic release him for nothing. I think he will go , but is very saleable. Strong rumour that Lenny is interested.
