Own the field, Celtic

357

Malmo manager Age Hareide’s press conference yesterday had a touch of the Kevin Keegan’s about it. As STV pointed out, Swedish journalists, writing for both Swedish and Scottish outlets, transcribed Malmo goalkeeper, Johan Wiland’s words, “They are pigs, all of them, that’s the way it is.”

Hareide didn’t like the coverage. I’m not surprised, he knows that it will be a significant motivator for Celtic, pinned to the proverbial dressing room wall, but his attempt to rebut reports as a failure in translation does not bear scrutiny. Not if it was Swedes who did the translating. Pigs are pigs.  Wiland gave Ronny Deila’s team talk.

While Ronny had an affirmative weekend, winning away at Tannadice, Hareide had to face up to his public defeated, increasingly unlikely to retain the league title. A run of three victories before visiting Celtic Park, has morphed into two consecutive defeats. A four point deficit became seven points, with nine games remaining. They are five points from a Europa League spot next season.  In short, Malmo are one bad result from the collapse of their season.

That’s not to say they are incapable of damaging Celtic, or Salzburg, we know that’s not the case, but there is an inherent fragility about them, which Celtic need to exploit.  They are a dangerous team who are punching above their weight, but there are no hidden reservoirs of strength.

This is what it’s all about Celtic.  This is the reason you’ve pulled your socks on each morning since your first joined a boys team.  The challenge is stiff but winnable, the prize, enormous.

Own the field.

Remember, there will be a collection of backpacks for Mary’s Meals on the Celtic Way ahead of the St Johnstone game on Saturday.  Bring anything you have along, it will be gratefully received and will be on the shoulders of a kid walking to school in Malawi, Kenya or Zambia in no time.  Thank you.

  1. Starry,

    You’re welcome.

I know we don’t play the best version of the game but I quite like our loanees staying in the country.

As with Liam Henderson, I’m delighted that Darnell Fisher is getting an opportunity to play first team football and in the SPL, too.

The boy has done really well, considering he left Surray as a very young boy and relocated to Glasgow.

    Good luck, son.

  4. Very nervy about this evening. Last week, sitting there thinking at 2-0, it will take an almighty disaster now for us not to qualify.

I think we are a better team than them and hope we go out and tonight and show that.

We have made it very difficult for ourselves but if we are on our game and get the rub of the green we can do it.

Good luck Ronny and the bhoys.

  5. Home and away ties in Europe are all about psychology. If we’re good enough to beat them at home, we’re good enough away. Players with bottle and character required…..please.

I should have been up in Sweden tonight with my 2 sons but we couldn’t get 3 tickets. Here’s hoping the Bhoys can do it tonight. I would settle for any result that gets us through, but knowing Celtic it will be a nerve jangling occasion.

Anyhoos, the last time I was in Sweden I went to the local chemist to buy some deodorant and asked the girl behind the counter if they had any? She said to me in a strong Swedish accent “Yas vee do, ball type or arosole?” to which I replied “Naw hen, just for under my arms.”

    C’mon the Hoops.

In my opinion the outball tonight will be Cifti he is strong and can hold the ball bringing others in to the game thats why I think he will start. Ronny will bring on Sparkey to use his pace in the last 20 minutes or so mind you I could be wrong I have been before.H.H.

  8. Going to be tense tonight. If we can give a disciplined display as we did against Qarabag away 0-0, I’ll be a happy bhoy

  9. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Sad to see Darnell sent on loan, he never let us down when he played but pleased he’ll get a chance to show what he can do.

Darnell going there why St Johnstone let silky soccer star,Wright, leave, despite them playing different positions in defence.

I hope our players are feeling less nervous than I am.

Thanks for the updates about Danny – TCR , hope his recovery goes to plan and he’s back on CQN soon .

  11. Great atmosphere in Malmö Lilla Torg at the moment. Just waiting for the police escort to take us all to the stadium! Positive mood here! Often easier to be at the game than watch on TV. 2-1 Johansen!

  12. Strangely enough, if we are to go out, I’d prefer a comprehensive defeat to something like a scrambled 1-0 win for Malmo in the 90th minute.

My nerves would be best settled by us going 5 up after ten minutes.

  13. Pogmathonyahun aka Laird of the Smiles on

Having read the report on what happened to TCR, we are not talking about theft of a mobile phone and GBH here. In my opinion we are talking about attempted murder. These guys need to be found and dealt with!!

An attack like that leaves more than physical scars. Hopefully our Bhoy will make a full recovery.

One thing I did note was the film of the young players in the tunnel prior to kick off. The Celtic bhoys were towering over the Barca boys. Seems the Catalans still look for ability ,skill and stamina over height and strength. They haven’t done too badly developing footballing superstars following that philosophy over the years.

Never known a day drag so slow.

Should have been going tonight – a wee flight from Oslo to Copenhagen was all lined up – but couldn’t get a return in time.

Leaving the office tonight our big Swedish Art Director Robert from Malmo lumbers over. We swapped handshakes, good luck wishes and a manly bear-hug. “Good Luck for tonight mate. We’ll pick it up tomorrow.”

Which just proves that he has more class than his coach and half his team.

My sole hope is that these awful fish puns stop. I don’t want anyone perched on their soap boxes battering on with their piscine banter.

I’d be very surprised to see Malmo go gung-ho right at the start. Their last minute goal at CP gives them options. They can start slowly and build up a rhythm knowing they only need a 1-0 or 2-1 to go through. To be honest if we are going to concede a tie-changing goal (and I fear we will) I’d rather it near the start than at the end. The outcome of tonight’s match and subsequent transfer activities will define the season for me and no doubt many other supporters.
