Paddy the wizard, Paddy the athlete, he’s going all the way

547

We like Patrick Roberts; all of us do. He’s the kind of player who gets fans out of their seats, an entertaining throwback to a time when wing wizards were wanted by all. But Patrick is more than that.

I spent a bit of time with him last year at an Adidas ‘Backed by Messi’ event. He was very chilled for most of the day, before becoming sharply focussed, “I need to eat.” “I need to eat” was said several times. It had an urgency, the time for shooting the breeze was over, within minutes, a meal was needed to keep physiological objectives on plan.

Patrick wasn’t seeing many first team minutes at that time, but focus was complete. This is an athlete who plans to go all the way in the game.

He’s at Celtic because he wanted to be here. Manchester City were looking for an incredible figure for his transfer, well over double Celtic’s previous highest transfer fee, although perhaps not so incredible given the market in England. Without Patrick’s patience, City would have found a buyer, but Patrick knows where he and Celtic are going this season.

Great to have you back, Paddy.  You’re going to love playing centre half.  Ask big Nir, it’s an absolute blast!

Patrick Roberts 12M rated player returns to Scotland and speaks to the media but gets blanked by both BBC and STV television channels in the main evening bulletins.

    DELANEYS DUNKY,

I remember meeting “The Fastest talker in the west” at national conference. I also had a few meetings with Tony Benn in the early 70’s. The best was probably Harold Wilson, IMO. Bring back Clause 4 and get rid of the Blairites. If it had not been for that Labour Party, our family would not have received the Health service and Education that we did!

    ……………………………………………..

I watched a tv documentary a few weeks ago called ” Politicians and Gangsters” or something like that.

There was a Tory Minister called Boothby who was up to his neck in his alliance with the Kray Twins. Boothby denied ever meeting the Krays during an investigation into London Rent Boys being used by Ministers and one of those boys was murdered at one of their gay sex parties ( allegedly)

Boothby had earlier been prominent in Government during the 2nd World War…which is a very scary thought imo.

In the 1960s when this scandal broke, Harold Wilson …Prime Minister was allegedly a willing part of the Cover Up that took place, especially after that boys murder.

IF true, then I’m afraid that dear old Harold was also up to his neck in this scandal by way of ensuring it was covered up.

    Cheers mate.

The conduct of guys like Boothby and many others before, during and since is eye opening to say the least.

According to the tv prog, Harold Wilson then PM colluded with the Tories to ensure the cover up, as ( if I remember correctly ?), he did so because of the scale of the scandal was right up there with the earlier Purfumo scandal.

Now that Paddy has landed and we can stop speculating about his signing, we can start speculating when he will be given his first start.

Personally, I believe it will be October before he trots on to the pitch as a starter.

Brendan likes players who are physically and mentally match fit.

James is up to speed, regardless of what you think of his form.

    Sinclair likewise.

Johnny Hayes is still not there, nor is Armstrong.

Accies game is on a plastic playground pitch.

Quick thinking and quick reactions are needed.

Then we will host an over confident PSG who won’t know what it’s like to play in the Celtic Park cauldron and will under estimate us.

We will need strong straining sinews and large lungs to unsettle and outrun the French club.

I can only see Paddy play cameo late game roles in both these matches with James preferred especially as a reward for his willing but unfamiliar part in getting us into the groups.

Longer appearances against Ross County and Dundee will have him ticking over nicely for the demolition of Scotland’s newest team on the 23rd.

  11. No disrespect to your numbers Celtic by numbers, personally I think your over cooking a park the bus performance team who from the starting whistle played with eight men back, and had no chance of even trying to entertain or show any skill in the game called football,.

Many say there is an art to defending? Me personally do not see any art or skill in that type of game, if the truth be known its abysmal and boring and would get the game stopped as a sport, IMO The art of defence is attack and entertain, not defend and kill the game, St.J are a very poor team and a boring team, they/you can put all the stats you like it won’t make them a better team, in Europe Aberdeen, Sevco, and St. J are all out of it because of they’r style of play, they have no creativity, no skill, no adventure, and no belief, that’s the difference between us and them, they don’t play to win, they play not to lose, stats? Naaaaaa not for me, but that’s just my opinion,

A CAFE in Belfast has become a viral hit after offering free ‘bromantic’ milkshakes for life to Celtic stars Kiernan Tierney and Patrick Roberts.

Applejacks Cafe in West Belfast posted the offer to the two players following the announcement that Roberts, 20, was to extend his loan deal at Celtic Football Club.

In a tweet, the cafe said: “S’happenin Patrick Roberts. Now you and Kieran Tierney are reunited, a deal’s a deal. Free bromantic milkshakes for life at Applejacks.”

Cheeky Manchester City loan star Roberts then replied to the tweet and his pal Tierney, “Fancy it?”

Tierney, also 20, replied: “Sure do my man.”

The two players hit off as part of Celtic’s invincibles team and Roberts agreeing to a new season-long loan deal prompted many Hoops fans to comment on the reunited bromance between the pair.

Applejacks then responded: “Grand. Let us know when suits you. We’ve a roll of green carpet here we haven’t used yet. Totes emosh seeing the Bhoys back together again.”

    E.T.

There will be a few familiar faces in Scotland’s top flight this season for Patrick Roberts.

Brandon Barker has gone on loan to Hibs from Manchester City while Aaron Nemane has gone to Rangers.

“We watched the Manchester City v Everton game and Aaron was sitting in front of me,” said Roberts. “He never mentioned he was going to Rangers – and he signed the next day as well.

“This will be a good move for him; it certainly was for me. Scotland is a great place to come and play. I won’t wish him all the best because, obviously, we’ll be going out there to win against them.

“He’s another winger – I played on the right side and he played on the left. It’s good to have more high-calibre players in the Premiership.

“I played alongside Brandon for City and England. He’s a very good player and, hopefully, he can show that for Hibs.”

Meanwhile, Roberts is itching to get back on the pitch after playing very little football over the summer.

Celtic are not in action now until next Friday night due to the international calendar and Roberts will have to wait until then before getting his boots on.

There was a frustration on Roberts’ part as he kicked his heels while the deal between City and Celtic was reached and he is looking forward to focussing fully on getting game time under his belt.

“You want to be playing as many games as you can throughout the season so you keep your fitness and match sharpness,” he said.

“During pre-season, to see the team you eventually sign for, playing a hell of a lot of games when you haven’t is quite tough but that’s part and parcel of football.

“You’ve got to get straight at it which I’m looking forward to doing.’

  19. KT and PR7 Bromance…….it won’t last ?

They will fall out when one of them shoots for goal in the last minute v the Huns , and the ball will take a slight deflection off the other one for the winner.

Both will claim the winning goal…massive bust up….divorce…and then one of them will sell his story to the tabloids.

Thereafter, both will be in the celebrity jungle…where they will kiss and make up.

The nation will be gripped !

Interesting point re the art of defending vs Primitive “park the bus” tendencies.

As it happens, I think it is a valid criticism of just “reading the numbers” that there was definitely a flow to the game and the constant and effective high press of St. Johnstone in the first half was not sustained in the 2nd, therefore the “numbers” for Johnny Hayes over James Forrest might be better because of that.

However, I think Celtic by Numbers does more than just “read the numbers” and has anticipated and acccounted for both those effects in his analysis. Watching the game live, everyone saw that Armstrong’s performance was far superior to Ntcham’s because Stuart was making penetrating runs rather than relying on passes only as Olivier was doing. Most of us watching were not aware that Hayes was being any more effective than Jamesie, though, and that is where the analysis by CbN is quite thought provoking in explaining why.

I’d also disagree a bit with the view that there is no art to defending or that St. Johnstone were just Park the Bus FC. For a Park the Bus team they managed a fair few more dangerous counter attacks than did Rangers on their UFA run, for example. they did not just stay in their shell and their forwards were defending in our half rather than their own.

I was excited by Celtic’s 1967 performance in Prague even though the game was not that exciting. I have also been excited (and terrified) by Celtic’s defending in Barcelona where Barca prevented our Bus from going forward, regardless of our intentions. I can see Art in the defending of a Beckenbauer, Baresi or a David Hay. I can see science in the tactics Neil Lennon deployed, to great effect, in making a Celtic defence with efe Ambrose perform heroically and with intelligence. I can see science in the way that WGS used the McManus/ Heid combination to slow down counter attacks until the midfielders got back to help out.

Like you, I cannot say that it was the most enjoyable style to watch and the Barca fans probably accused Neil Lennon of just parking the bus. But the bottom line is that you and I enjoyed that result (and the Man U home game win) despite being under the cosh for 90%+ of the match.

I’d also say many teams atempt to Park the Bus and leave CP with a 9:0 defeat (Mark McGhee was not coming unstuck with an expansive style of play). There is an Art and a Science to defending effectively but we’d all rather watch a season’s worth of Rodgers/Klopp/Guardiola football than watch a season worth of Steve Bruce or WGS or Tommy Wright or Walter Smith who are all quite good at that sort of thing, though not as good as the current masters of defence, Juventus and Atletico Madrid.

I think Tommy Wright is a good manager, and too good for St. Johnstone but I would not want him at Celtic
