Paddy the wizard, Paddy the athlete, he’s going all the way

547

We like Patrick Roberts; all of us do. He’s the kind of player who gets fans out of their seats, an entertaining throwback to a time when wing wizards were wanted by all. But Patrick is more than that.

I spent a bit of time with him last year at an Adidas ‘Backed by Messi’ event. He was very chilled for most of the day, before becoming sharply focussed, “I need to eat.” “I need to eat” was said several times. It had an urgency, the time for shooting the breeze was over, within minutes, a meal was needed to keep physiological objectives on plan.

Patrick wasn’t seeing many first team minutes at that time, but focus was complete. This is an athlete who plans to go all the way in the game.

He’s at Celtic because he wanted to be here. Manchester City were looking for an incredible figure for his transfer, well over double Celtic’s previous highest transfer fee, although perhaps not so incredible given the market in England. Without Patrick’s patience, City would have found a buyer, but Patrick knows where he and Celtic are going this season.

Great to have you back, Paddy.  You’re going to love playing centre half.  Ask big Nir, it’s an absolute blast!

    You beat me to it.

Not the result, the credit to Joe Root for declaring, that made it the game it became.

See when Blackwood took off his helmet, I presume for the cameras to obtain a better picture of him hitting the winning runs, you just knew he was going to get himself out.

    Evening All,

Just a wee reminder that I am punting seats for the British Heart Foundation Dinner Dance in Oran Mor on sunny Byres Road for the 21st September.

I am looking for a team of Celtic fans/CQN’ers to populate a table celebrating Lisbon.

Thus far apart from myself and Jamesgang, we have Artbhoy and his wife plus Mrs and Mrs One Malloy coming along with a possible/probable appearance by Hrvatski Jim. Loads of other Celtic minded fans going but it would be good to get a table of CQN’ers and partners.

Here is a wee link to the flier promoting the event.

Please note this is not a stuffed shirt corporate dinner. Yes it is a fund raiser, but it is meant to be a fun night out with lots of laughing, singing and dancing – smart/casual dress and maybe a prize for whoever is wearing the most expensive/ tasteful or tasteless item bought out of a BHF charity shop.

Be on Byres Road or be square — it’s at the Heart of BHF Scotland.

Gene, Jimmynotpaul, nice to see the West Indies winning a test match, particularly in those circumstances , against England

My dad really enjoyed cricket and he watched the 1975 World Cup final between West Indies and Australia.

I watched it with him . The West Indies team of that year were the cricket equivalent of the Lisbon Lions and the Brazil 1970 world cup winners . Clive Lloyd, Gordon Greenidge , Alvin Kalacharan etc were good to watch. The biggest bonus was the colour and noise the West Indies fans brought to that match.

If that Stuart Broad guy was a footballer , he would be a hun.

Patrick Robers will be even better for us this season.

Cricket lovely Cricket CSC -way down south -where it’s 32 at 19 58.

  6. Brendan has signed 9 players, all have come from England apart from JH, who he knew from Reading. Correct me if I’m wrong. So, logically there is more than a fair chance the two players pending are coming from down south. It’s an expensive shop but at least you know what you’re getting.

  7. The BBC’s Dave King correspondent hurting over Paddy signing. Not testing himself, not good enough for EPL.

  8. Dallas.

It was watching that team that made me decide, yes I can enjoy cricket

Sir Viv was always the man for me. I remember once he said he couldn’t bat because he had hemorrhoids. Can you imagine that happening in the modern PR spin world.

Fire in Babylon a great movie about The West Indies team, the political situation at the time and their culture. Just magic.

Yes I know what you mean about Broad, of course his Dad was a test cricketer too, so maybe it’s that hunnish sense of entitlement that shines through.

The PSG striker should be on loan again this season. Discussions with Celtic Glasgow are on track.

Odsonne Edouard could find the PSG … as an opponent, in the Champions League, on September 12th. The Parisian striker, 19, is in talks with Celtic Glasgow (Scotland), for a loan of one season. Last year, he had been loaned to Toulouse (16 appearances, 1 goal in L1). The experiment had been marked by a trial , following a pistol shot at a passer-by.

Since this summer, Edouard trains alternately with the professional staff and with the reserve. He participated in the tour in the United States. Promised to a very weak playing time at the PSG, a loan is desired by all parties. At Celtic, he could find or succeed Moussa Dembélé, a former PSG whose future is blurry a few days from the end of the mercato.

  16. Tell big Odsonne Édouard to bring his air-gun as well – plenty marauding Zombies for target practice.

  17. Somebody at the Sun reading French news outlets on line like the rest of us

CELTIC are weighing up a loan move for PSG striker Odsonne Edouard.

Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers wants to land a new frontman before Thursday’s deadline.

And SunSport can confirm that Edouard has emerged as a possible option for Celtic.

The powerful 19-year-old spent the bulk of last season on loan at Toulouse in Ligue 1.

That deal was cut short after the teenager was involved in an airgun incident – which eventually led to a four month suspended prison sentence.

Edouard returned to PSG but has been unable to force his way into gaffer Unai Emery’s plans.

With Kylian Mbappe due to arrive from Monaco, his chances will be limited even further.

And Rodgers – who admits he travelled to Paris last week – could now plunder his Champions League rivals for the striker.

It’s understood the Celtic boss is looking at several options – but Edouard is a player of interest.

Viv Richards came across as one cool dude when he was interviewed .

Ian Botham was asked to play in a tournament in South Africa which was similar to the Kerry Packer thing in Australia. This was before apartheid was ended.

To his eternal credit , he refused to play in it citing how can I look my great friend Viv Richards , in the eye and say I’m getting paid a fortune playing cricket in a country where black people arecso discriminated against.

Its a pity about the interatioal break, like most of us , I am very keen on seeing Patrick playing for us again.

  20. Sounds better in French
